Good book shame about the reading
I really enjoyed the pace of this book but it was spoilt be the very flat reading. It could have which more enjoyable if the reader had put more life into his performance.

    A great read
    Elvus Cole fan
i have previously heard Robert Crais books narrated by William Roberts & found his voice and reading far more engaging & stimulating to the imaginaton. In this reading, Cole & Pike's characters were flat. ...uninteresting. Elvis' cheeky wit never came alive under Mr Foster's narrative. I will not listen to another Robert Crais novel narrated by Mel Foster

But they have made one catastrophic and almost certainly terminal mistake - Joe Pike. Because Pike is now determined to hunt down and eliminate everyone involved in the attack, one by one. And it doesn't matter that, as he starts to investigate, he discovers that these criminals are bigger and better organised than he ever could have imagined, because they are about to learn the first rule.... Don't make Joe Pike mad....

    Title: The Distance
    Author: Helen Giltrow
    Narrator: Rachel Atkins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-09-14
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 44 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
A dark, ultra-contemporary, and relentlessly paced debut thriller about a London society woman trying to put her secret criminal past behind her, and the hit man who comes to her with an impossible job she can't refuse.
Charlotte Alton is an elegant socialite. But behind the locked doors of her sleek, high-security apartment in London's Docklands, she becomes Karla. Karla's business is information. Specifically, making it disappear. She's the unseen figure who, for a commanding price, will cover a criminal's tracks. A perfectionist, she's only made one slip in her career - several years ago she revealed her face to a man named Simon Johanssen, an ex-special forces sniper turned killer-for-hire. After a mob hit went horrifically wrong, Johanssen needed to disappear, and Karla helped him. He became a regular client, and then, one day, she stepped out of the shadows for reasons unclear to even herself.
Now, after a long absence, Johanssen has resurfaced with a job, and he needs Karla's help again. The job is to take out an inmate - a woman - inside an experimental prison colony. But there's no record the target ever existed. That's not the only problem: the criminal boss from whom Johanssen has been hiding is incarcerated there. That doesn't stop him. It's Karla's job to get him out alive, and to do that she must uncover the truth. Who is this woman? Who wants her dead? Is the job a trap for Johanssen or for her? But every door she opens is a false one, and she's getting desperate to protect a man - a killer - to whom she's inexplicably drawn. Written in stylish, sophisticated prose, The Distance is a tense and satisfying debut in which every character, both criminal and law-abiding, wears two faces, and everyone is playing a double game.
    Critic Reviews:
In British author Giltrows riveting debut, the rich sophisticated Charlotte Alton is the alter ego of Karla, who operates a high-tech information network. Eight years earlier, Karla established a new identity for Simon Johanssen, a hit man fleeing gangster John Quillan. Now Johanssen wants her help infiltrating the Program, a prisoner-run society in a heavily guarded London neighborhood...the attraction between him and Karla, as well as other unexpected connections between damaged characters, add depth to an already satisfying read." "Fast, hard, and very, very good." (Lee Child, internationally bestselling author of the Jack Reacher thrillers)

    Better than Lee Child
What made the experience of listening to The Distance the most enjoyable?
How refreshing to be challenged by an audiobook!
What other book might you compare The Distance to and why?
I heard about The Distance on a podcast, where the critic chose it as one of her top 'undiscovered' books of 2014, and compared it favorably with Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. Having enjoyed them (mostly), I clearly had to check it out. I can certainly see why the comparison was made, but in other ways the books are far apart. I found The Distance far more engaging, and demanding of my attention to follow the plot. In the Reacher novels, my mind can wander, but the text and plot are sufficiently simple that my peripheral attention has kept me up to speed, and I don't feel that i've missed anything when my focus returns.

"Evocative, first-rate mystery that will keep you guessing to the end!" (Stacey Joy Netzel, New York Times best-selling author of the Italy Intrigue Series)
    Members Reviews:
    Fun story
The book was a quick listen, grabbed my attention from the start. The characters were lovable and interesting. Once again in this series, there was a theme of redemption. If you like a little mystery mixed with romance its a good book for you. If you prefer more gore and medical procedure then I would not recommend this one. Overall an enjoyable listen.
An exciting edge of your seat murder mystery!
What made the experience of listening to Skeleton's Key the most enjoyable?
The characters are expertly written with depth, realistic flaws and admirable strengths. One can't help but get attached to them and cheer for them throughout the book. Skeleton's Key is cleverly written to keep the reader guessing on who the culprit is to the very end. A perfect mix of history, murder, suspense, & romance, Skeleton's Key made this "Yankee" reader want to pack up my bags & explore the south!
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved Dani! She's passionate, clever, loyal, and stubborn with a sweetness that is irresistible. I admire her respect for the south and her good intentions and laughed out loud at some of her "northern" ways.
What does Johanna Fairview bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She adds depth and emotion when narrating that adds to the story. A great story teller helps the reader to experience the story in more detail.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
That's hard to say without giving anything away in the novel! I will say the mystery is incredibly well done. Stacy Green excels at keeping the reader guessing and preventing any of her novels from being predictable. It leaves you on the edge of your seat, unable to stop listening because you just need to know what happens next.
    Any additional comments?
When Dani uproots her life after losing her mother to move to a quaint southern town she hopes to be greeted by warm hospitality, sweat tea and exciting finds as she restores the beautiful old plantation home she just purchased. What happens however, throws her in the path of a murderer. When bones are found in the basement of the Ironwood plantation, Dani realizes that the legends of hidden rooms and treasures may not be just stories after all...

    Release date: 08-05-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Quake is a disaster novel of epic proportions that will have listeners thinking twice about their next trip to New York City.
New York City has seen its share of disasters: Terrorist attacks, blackouts, hurricanes, floods. But nothing has prepared the Big Apple for the biggest earthquake to ever hit the United States - 9.0 on the Richter scale. Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs are a smoldering catastrophe, plunging New York into terrifying chaos. Skyscrapers and bridges have collapsed, killing hundreds of thousands. For a handful of survivors, the nightmare is just beginning.
Clawing north, navigating the ruined city amid violent aftershocks, FBI agent Francisco Mendoza hopes to reunite with his wife. Assistant US Attorney Nick Dykstra is hell-bent on finding his daughter way uptown at Columbia University - before a 9/11 conspirator who escaped during the quake finds her first. But the Indian Point nuclear power plant, forty miles north, is severely damaged. A deadly cloud of radiation is drifting toward the city. The only chance for survival is going down into the subways - and deeper still.
    Members Reviews:
    Good disaster, suspense story
I found this novel to be excellent in its portrayal of the aftermath of an earthquake. I lived through a major earthquake and identify with the anxiety and desperation to get to your loved ones even if you have to walk on a twisted ankle or walk by leaning buildings as you pray that they don't fall on your head during an aftershock. I only found the constant Sept. 11 reference to be a tired storyline by now, and in this novel, it's overplayed.
    Meh
The book was okay. I got a little bit tired of the terrorism because it's New York City. I understand New York City feels it's the center of the universe but if everybody New York feels like this father and daughter then they need some psychological help. Lots of codependency. I get the father's trying to get his daughter. But this is a little extreme.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a veteran cop tries to arrest baseball's home run king, one of them ends up on trial and the other one ends up dead.
A routine stakeout is almost over when Dave Mackno decides to pursue a speeding Porsche. It's a decision that will have deadly consequences. That's because the Porsche is being driven by Remo Centrella, baseball's home run king, who is half-drunk and at the tail-end of a steroid cycle that makes him think he's bulletproof.
There's no way Remo is going to let a no-name cop arrest him. Especially since the woman in his car has a fresh welt underneath her eye.
For Atlanta Barons owner Ray Manning, the timing of the shooting couldn't be worse. With his oil company on the verge of a financial death spiral, he's running out of cash, and his investment bankers at Cohen, Wolfe are lining up to take full advantage of his situation. He's now in desperate need of the kind of justice that only money can buy.

Just when you think you know how it will end...
Disclosure: I received this audiobook in return for an honest review
Take one professional sports star, a cheating wife, an old school cop, an ambitious district attorney, a late night shooting and what do you get? Those characters and that scenario form the foundation of R. C. O'Leary's Hallways in the Night. Just when you think you know what happened, the story unfolds yet again and you realize everything you thought was true and certain, wasn't. What initially seems straightforward is later found to be multi-faceted and complex. I wasn't sure how the story would end and didn't want to put it down. The narration adds wonderful nuance and ambience to the story. I was impressed by the variety of accents voiced by Mr. Cohen and their authenticity. This was a very interesting listen and I recommend it anyone who enjoys crime / legal thrillers.
    A really good story
    Bec's review Sep 02, 14 edit
    5 of 5 stars
    bookshelves: gifted-for-review, reviewed
Read from August 31 to September 03, 2014
This book was gifted to me by the narrator in return for an honest and timely review.
The story grabbed from the beginning, it drew me in and I did not want to stop listening.
Atlanta, Detective Dave Mackno is on the third night of a tedious stakeout in the city. A Porsche is driven erratically through the street, the driver is restraining a woman.
The gripping story begins! The driver of the Porsche is a baseball star, he is aggressive, he and Dave get into a fight which culminates in Dave shooting the star.
The plot flies along and is full of surprising twists and turns through the murky world of politics, racism and the legal system. This book lacked the tedium of the never ending legal intricacies and long winded speechifying that, to me, signifies a legal thriller.
I really enjoyed the ending, which, in itself held a surprise.
The narration by Steven Jay Cohen was excellent, he acts the role of each character in such a way that the listener is easily able to identify each one. His voice has a pleasing rhythm and pace which added to my enjoyment of the story.

Not sure what I saw in this book. It wasn't the story I expected and it felt a little preachy at times. I didn't like the characters, and by the time the third act rolled around, I just didn't care anymore. This is the rare book that I couldn't finish.

An extraordinary thriller set at the frozen edge of the world, perfect for fans of Kate Mosse, Michael Crichton and Dan Brown.
In the Arctic Ocean, the US Coast Guard icebreaker Terra Nova batters its way through the pack ice. There shouldn't be anyone near them for hundreds of miles. But then a lone skier, half-dead with cold, emerges out of the snow. His name is Tom Anderson, and he is the only survivor of a disaster at Zodiac Station, a scientific research base deep in the Arctic Circle. He tells an incredible story of scientists and spies, of lust and greed, of jealousy, mayhem and murder. But his tale simply doesn't add up. Whose blood is smeared across his clothes? Why is there a bullet hole through the jacket he's wearing, and why is that jacket labelled with someone else's name? It's clear that more was going on at Zodiac Station than Anderson is telling. And someone else may have survived the disaster, as well. someone who has killed before, and who is willing to kill again.

surprised at how good this was
never heard of the author, so this was a crapshoot for me. I kept expecting it to be awful or at best mediocre. but it just kept getting better. what a happy surprise. and the narrator is first rate. if you're looking for an engaging sci-fi/mystery that won't insult your intelligence, try this one.
Hand my jacket, will you please?
What made the experience of listening to Zodiac Station the most enjoyable?
The performance by Piers Wehener was truly a highlight, but the overall twists and turns in the story arc was compelling. I really didn't see how the story was to resolve until the very end.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Zodiac Station?
The conclusion has so many angles and asymetric ideas, it grabbed me.
What does Piers Wehener bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His accents and emotions are very impression.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The internal dialogue by our hero is thoughtful and realistic.
    Any additional comments?
I was moved by this book , which, for a protypical Arctic thriller, is unusual. Very impressive and well worth the credit.
Finally, a listen that kept me listening....
Best listen of the summer! Excellent story, well written, and superb narration. Keeps you wondering until the very end. Well worth the credits.
Please Audible, find more of these gems.
    Good plot, interestingly told
I enjoyed the story. It's got a very twisty plot with a bit of an homage to one of literature's greatest horror novels (I won't say which, because that will give away the story). The setting is well described, eerie and tension-filled. It's a tale narrated through a number of different character's POVs and documents, which makes the pacing slightly odd, but helps to keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing.
The one part of the story I thought was a big of a let-down was the rather superficial, convenient characterizations. There are some really intriguing characters in the story and I thought they could have been better fleshed out. I got the feeling they were left tenuous in order to allow the plot more flexibility.
