It was a good tale. The plot and story line was excellent ...

It was a good tale. The plot and story line was excellent and the characters were filled out nicely. DI Geraldine Steel, herself with major character flaws, is the star of the tale and although she resolves the issues, her self doubt hinders her work. I'm not sure a DI would operate on her own so much but the tale works. My only problem is that I think the tale is about 50 pages too long. A minor issue.

don't know how this author

Has managed to put out so many books, or quite frankly why I bought them, note to self, read book 1 before buying whole series ! This author makes every single characters police officers especially, come across as incompetent idiots, not sure if there is a message there, maybe so ..... The lead character is also incompetent, but a b!tch to boot. There is little to like about her, how she treats her colleagues, how she acts in general. Most dislikable character ever in any books I've read. The author also needs writing lessons, lots of the text comes across as very stilted, and just not normal. I won't be buying any more of this authors work and feel sorry for anyone that does. There are plenty of good authors out there without this kind of rubbish.

I have always loved Leigh Russell books but this is'nt as good as the others. The characters lack depth, the storyline is very very predictable and I just wanted to finish it so I could go on to something else

Great book!

I loved this book, excellent read as all Leigh Russell's books are. I've read them all and can certainly recommend them. Looking forward to the next one! A well deserved five star review!

A Plot with Potential

The plot had good potential but the writing was ponderous and repetitive. I didn't have a good feel for the characters who were presented two dimensionally. The behaviour of the the characters was also not plausible in terms of the way for instance a 10 year old boy may feel, think and act. I did not find the representations of the characters believable and had no empathy for them.

A Mystery Loverâs Five Star Read

If you enjoy a gruesome mystery, engaging and unique characters, and an ending that will leave you wanting more, this story is for you! I have read it twice in the past six years: once on its own and again before I read Brassettâs two subsequent mysteries in this series. Both reads were simultaneously invigorating and haunting. While the second and third stories are quick, quirky, and satisfying reads, Duplicity scores this mystery loverâs five stars. The characters are first rate creations and deserve your attention. Enjoy.

Sad curmudgeon's cases neatly tidied up

This is a story of Solomon (aka Sol or Gray) Gray's investigation of 4 deaths. He is an emotionally messed up British D.S. all of, an unlikeable person. He is also a dedicated & insightful detective who uses his job to escape work on improving himself. The ploy used to make Sol a sympathetic character is the same one used in another modern detective series. That fact also detracted from this tale; a bit of been-there-done-that. The story bounced around between the present, 10 yrs ago when a major life event happened & 5 yrs in between. The timing of the bouncing lacked flow & apparent reason.

The story focused on 4 deaths, in total (they happened throughout the tale) along with a major event in Gray's past. Most of the story centers on Gray's investigation of the 4 deaths.

I have never heard of Chaga until I read this book. If I ever run across it in a tea shop, I might be tempted to try some. All in all a very easy read. The amount of characters was easy enough to keep track. Also bringing in a few favorites from the past that you want to know more about.

enjoyed them all

I have read all nine Aikido Mystery books; enjoyed them all. Recommend them all, even though those who are not into the martial arts. It is a good series. I cannot wait for the author's next book. Thank you!

Not as much Aikido as in others but all in all well written. Wish I could write as well. Interesting.

Just when I was starting to go into Sensei Parker withdrawal!

What a wonderful gift for Christmas! I was beginning to start my withdrawal symptoms from waiting for the next installment, as I'm certain my fellow Sensei Parker fans were also feeling. This is great new installment in the series complete with a damsel in distress ( sort of ), flash backs to the 60's & 70's, slick aikido movement and some manly outdoor pursuits. I love the characters, I feel as though I met each of them personally and expect to run into them in the woods. The accuracy and descriptions of the trees, Chaga and the towns make it all so life like. It's like stepping into a world that fits!

Lemon Layne is at it again!

Lemon Layne is at it again. I must say, I think Dakota totally channeled my current situation for Lemon this time around. The insomnia, her requirements set forth by her doctors, it's almost spot on. Seriously! Anyway. Like always, Dakota knows her word magic. This was another great adventure for Lemon, Jessica Fletcher, Mama May, Coco, Justice and Cappie. Being from Washington State, it's always nice to read what authors think of that state and Dakota didn't disappoint. In this story, we return to Fig Harbor and Lemon's Smoke and Petrol Station for brisket and catfish. This time, the action takes place in her koi pond. And Koi George, her pet koi fish is traumatized instead of their bathroom. One of the Fig Harbor locals is "sleeping with fishes", literally. While Lemon promises to stay out of the investigation and does everything she can to stay out of it, everyone else seems to work against her and keeps dropping things into her lap. It's a whirlwind of days as Lemon meets those that are associated with the lovely lady associated with sleeping beauty in the pond and how it all relates. As Lemon seems to be everywhere, so is Justice. Will they be able to figure out the case before something tragic happens? Grab a copy and enjoy the read to find out!

Lemon Layne is back! You would have thought that her adventures in Prawn of the Dead would have put her off sleuthing but when a body is found in her koi pond she just has to find out what happened. There is a crazy mix of suspects and the usual bunch of crazies at Lemonâs back that guarantee this to be a fun mix of murder and mayhem. If you are looking for a clean, fun, cozy mystery I heartily recommend Lemon Layne.

Lemon can't stay out of trouble!

I liked this book even better than the first! This time, Lemon is (mostly) trying to stay out of the murder investigation and out of trouble, but trouble has a way of finding her. There are lol moments, but also emotional parts where I teared up. I love her relationships with her mom, Coco, Justice, and the other towns people. I can't wait for the next one!

Puns abound once again.

I'm beggining to wonder if Lemon's place has a triangle around it. Death and disasters seem to accumulate there. How peaceful can a Koi pond be if people keep dying around it.

GREAT READ AND UNPREDICTABLE!!!

I really like Lemon and would never have figured out the murderer.

Excellent sequel to this series!

Gemma Doyle returns for another adventure in Vicki Delaney's Body on Baker Street. The proprietor and half owner of The Sherlock Holmes Book Shop and Emporium, Gemma is delighted to receive a request to come do a book signing of her latest book from the best selling Renalta van Markoff. The author writes a bodice ripping series in which Sherlock Holmes and Mrs. Hudson are lovers, with the woman's being the real brain behind the detective. The excitement over Renalta's coming appearance rises, especially when Renalta shows up the Thursday before her Saturday book signing and charms all her fans, though Gemma sees another side of the author as self-centered and petulant.

Then that night, while Gemma and her best friend, Jayne, are enjoying dinner at the most exclusive restaurant in West London, Massachusetts, Renalta and her entourage enter to the delight of the other diners. Donna Leon paints with words.

This book is based not so much in Venice but out on the Venitian Laguna. I just really appreciate the detailed picture of the surroundings that Donna Leon creates. You can see the scene so clearly. I throughly enjoyed the book, although the subject she has written about is a pretty distressing one. It all seems to be centred around one character but as Guido Brunetti starts to ask questions about his new friend it becomes apparent that there is something more complex in his past.

I have listened to all the Brunetti books that Audible has and was so pleased to see that another had been released. Lovely to be whisked off to Venice and the Islands of the Lagoon again. Also to catch up with the characters that bring it all to life. A fantastic series of books. Highly recommend.

Another Venetian tale for a few hours relaxation

Where does Earthly Remains rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

As a light novel, it is well written and the narrator is familiar with the type of books that Donna Leon writes. I look forward to the next one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Brunetti of course. He is wonderful and makes one wish that there were real policemen like him.

Have you listened to any of David Rintouls other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes. Always good.

Absolutely. A good story, nice background and excellent narration.

Very different story to the usual ones. But compelling and thoughtful making you want to keep reading.

Mixed feelings

I enjoyed the story, the unusual setting and the message.

I was disappointed with the narration and didn't like the change in voices which sounded stilted and dated, surprising for such an experienced actor. I woul d have preferred a straight reading.

Author Bobby Cole's best novel yet!

I have reviewed Cole's other 4 audio novels, including the three in the Jake Crosby series plus The Rented Mule, here at Audible. With Silent Approach Cole has written a great suspense thriller that moves him into the elite of thriller authors. And he did it without any of the Mississippi redneck humor that he used in his prior novels; however, to maintain the southern flavor the protagonist John Allen Harper is called John Allen. The publisher's summary provides sufficient background which I will not repeat in my review. Jeremy Arthur's narration also gets a solid 5 stars.

This is the first Bobby Cole novel that I give MY HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION. Had I realized it was this good I would not have waited until a month after release to listen to Silent Approach.

Fast & Suspenseful - Very Enjoyable!

Bobby Cole always writes fast paced action packed books that grab the reader right from the beginning and don't let go until you've reached the end. This one is no different.

In this book the protagonist (John Allen Harper) is on his way to meet his pregnant wife when he sees her killed in an inevitable car accident and he is helpless to stop it from happening. Of course he blames himself. Following a year of depression he becomes a liaison for the Choctaw nation, a total break from his life before his wife died. His job is to track down stolen artifacts and find out who is selling them. He teams up with an FBI agent (a woman he is attracted to and her to him). There have been murders over these artifacts and another liaison went missing so this is not a job with out danger. John Allen does track down the sellers but they have plans for him as well. And they're not nice. I can't say anymore with out spoiling the book for anyone.

Jeremy Arthur does a great job narrating.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

well-meaning but falls short

The book suffers from being a bit too nice. The protagonist is a nice fellow who's in a bad way until events conspire to give him a good gig. The bad guys are rotten people, though not especially believably so . . .

As UCLA's resident Kubrick expert, Professor Mascaro was the recipient of Kubrick's package. Inside is a reproduction of the famous photo Kubrick took for the cover of Look Magazine following the death of FDR. The image has become emblazoned in the American zeitgeist.

On the back of the photo is a message written by Kubrick that reads: "Follow me to Q's identity." Mascaro is stumped and asks Shawn Hagan, his brilliant but socially awkward film student, what he thinks that might mean.

Shawn takes the photo and studies it with his only two friends at school-Wilson Devereaux, an infamous former child star bent on becoming a respected director, and Samira "Sami" Singh, a graduate film student with a dark, rebellious past.

Not bad - but production quality suffered.

What did you like best about Kubrick's Game? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the obscure details or the hook of using Kubrick's movies to tie the book together. It was a fun story.

What didnt you like about the narratorss performance?

Jonathan's reading of the book was actually pretty good, however the production of the narration was not subject to good quality control. Multiple times the volume levels dropped significantly causing me to lose the stream of the story. I also question the use of one other naarrator for just one character. This was mildly disconcerting as well.

What did you love best about Kubrick's Game?

I was so impressed with how many specific references were in this book. As someone who has only seen a couple of Kubrick films, I still felt I was able to follow the complex story line. I also very much enjoyed listening to this book.

What did you like best about this story?

Since "reading"/listening to the book, I have been searching for more information about Stanley Kubrick, UCLA's film program, and I might even watch a few more Kubrick films.

Which scene was your favorite?

I have no idea how Kubrick buffs will feel about this book, but I felt that enough things were explained in detail that it didn't matter that I wasn't familiar with the specific references before encountering them within the story.

Any additional comments?

I have been following the evolution of Derek Taylor Kent's writing. This is by far his most ambitious work yet. I do hope that "Kubrick's Game" gets turned into a major motion picture, and that the "Scary School" series becomes a children's TV series.

Interesting story, with great narration

What made the experience of listening to Kubrick's Game the most enjoyable?

The narration was really great, more like a radio play than a simple narration.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was set up as a 'real-life' game board game.
