Perfect for the holiday car ride to Grandma's
This is a G-rated, family-friendly, cute, short, sweet, feel-good story. Mystery is a bit of a stretch for adults, but that's the price of having a kid-friendly tale. In any case, I would definitely recommend this audiobook for when you're in need of or have a desire for a cute, fluffy listen with very minimal drama and angst that you can share with the whole family.
The narrator does a good job and has the right tone for this type of book. Her male and female voices were reasonable. She was clear and easy to understand, and there were no problems with her pronunciation.
Some reviewers stated that the narration was too slow, but don't let that sway you from the audiobook. I listen to MOST audiobooks, including this one, at 1.25 speed because I believe, in order to enunciate clearly, the narrators HAVE to read more slowly than in usual conversation, and 1.25 usually works well to bring recording speed up to what I consider "normal" speed without elevating the pitch to chipmunk status.
I received this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review. The number of stars is based on where I believe this audiobook rates with other audiobooks of the same type, length and general feel-- not where it rates in comparison to all audiobooks of all time.
A cozy mystery for animal lovers!
What did you love best about Doggone Christmas?
I am such a huge animal lover, so I found myself really invested in the fate of the characters (especially the dog). There was a lot at stake here & I was cheering Polly on the whole way! She is a strong champion for animals & I shared that sentiment with her.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoy cozy mysteries a lot and this was one that I could easily listen to in one sitting, because it held my attention the whole time. You can easily breeze through this with a cup of hot tea & a rainy afternoon. It has a Christmas title, but can be enjoyed any time of the year!
Have you listened to any of Jennifer Fourniers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've never listened to other narrations from her, but she could do a bit better job with differentiating the voices of the women. Otherwise, she made it a really enjoyable listen!
    Any additional comments?
This is definitely more of a fluff story, not one with deep plot lines or suspense, but at the same time really likable characters. I enjoyed each and every main & supporting character, especially Suzette's sweetness. Polly resonated a lot with me, because she adores animals & has a sweet heart, and Tyler was the "bad boy" turned charming man.

    Title: Louisiana Hotshot
    Subtitle: Talba Wallis #1
    Author: Julie Smith
    Narrator: Nan McNamara
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-05-16
    Publisher: booksBnimble
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 84 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Confirmed grump Eddie Valentino placed the ad. Hotshot 20-something Talba Wallis knew exactly how to answer it.
And thus was born the dynamic duo of New Orleans private detectives, one cynical, 65-year-old Luddite white dude with street smarts, and one young, bright-eyed, 21st century African-American female poet, performance artist, mistress of disguise, and computer jock extraordinaire. Think Queen Latifah and Danny DeVito.
In Louisiana Hotshot, their job is to hunt down a sociopath and pedophile who's molested the 14-year-old daughter of their client, hangs out on the ragged edges of the rap and recording industries, and has more powerful allies than a Cabinet member.
But both detectives have unfinished business from the past - in Eddie's case, something he deeply regrets; in Talba's, a personal mystery, one so frightening no one will help her investigate. But she knows she won't sleep till she solves it - and the truth will change her forever.

Not at All What It Seems
What disappointed you about Louisiana Hotshot?
I wanted a fun mystery. I wanted interesting leads. I wanted relatable characters. I got none of that. Instead, the lead female character is whiny and entitled. The lead male is a curmudgeon and not in any endearing sense. And the mystery is hardly what I'd call intriguing.
Has Louisiana Hotshot turned you off from other books in this genre?
In the genre? No. In this series? Yes.
    Any additional comments?
I wanted to like it. I really wanted to like it. There aren't a ton of mysteries out there with a young WOC as the lead character but I just couldn't do it. I'll be returning this one and not reading anything else in this series.
    enjoyable
fast paced, comical, Louisiana based detective story. New Orleans is the perfect setting for this story.
    I Really Loved This Audiobook
First up, just a little warning, this book is described as a Humorous Mystery but if you are expecting a cozy, just be aware that there is some strong language flying around!
It all begins with Talbas' mother, Miz Clara, thinking it about time her daughter got herself a job, she scans the ads. and discovers this gem:
"Nerd wanted. Nerdette wouldnt be too bad. Young hotshot, under thirty, 5 yrs. computer, 10 yrs. investigative exp. Harvard ed., no visible piercings. Must play the computer like Horowitz played piano. Slave wages".
The ad. was placed by private detective Eddie Valentino but what neither he nor Talba knew was that Angela, Eddies daughter, had written a spoof ad., never imagining that he would actually run it!
Not worrying about such trifles as arranging an interview, Talba goes online, gets the lowdown on Eddie (and his family) and off she goes to see him. Eddie, feeling a bit blindsided isn't sure that Talba is quite suitable, despite the fact that she tells him that she is as much of a hotshot as he is likely to get.
Angela can't believe that someone actually answered the advertisement, she does a background check and discovers that Talba is a poet, the Baroness de Pontalba no less!
That night Angela takes Eddie and her mother to watch Talba perform. Talba gets the job.
    The Poem
Tabitha raps out a poem about how she got her name, not Tabitha, not the Baroness, but a name that a cruel minded doctor suggested to Miz Clara.

    Outstanding detective thriller
This 4.5 hour crime story is superb in every way. John C Dalglish writes with an economy of words while using the right words. Narration is as good as the story. I highly recommend this audiobook for those looking for exceptionally well written and well narrated modern detective novels. The most economical way to purchase it is using Whispersync for Voice at Amazon.com.
    Excellent Crime Story
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book. The narrator did a great job with telling the story. Some parts just broke my heart listening to what the characters went thru. It brings to light how wide spread an easily young women (an men) can be lured into human trafficking. The story is fast paced am moves along very smoothly. If your looking for a excellent crime story then you need to get a copy of this book. This review is for the Audio Copy of the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Even though Agatha Raisin loathes Christmas panto, her friend, Mrs Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local am dram society in their festive offering.
Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Wood, Agatha watches the baker playing an ogre strut and threaten onstage until a trapdoor opens, followed by a scream and silence! Surely this wasn't the way the scene was rehearsed.
When it turns out the local baker had been murdered most horribly, Agatha puts her team of detectives on the case. And they soon discover more feuds and temperamental behaviour in amateur dramatics than in a professional stage show - and face more and more danger as Agatha and her team get too close to the killer.
    M. C. Beaton was born in Scotland. She worked for many years as a journalist on Fleet Street. As well as the best-selling Agatha Raisin series, she is the author of the acclaimed Hamish Macbeth mysteries. She divides her time between the Cotswolds, where she lives in a village very much like Agatha's beloved Carsely, and Paris.
    Critic Reviews:
"The detective novels of M C Beaton, a master of outrageous black comedy, have reached cult status." (Anne Robinson, The Times)
"Agatha is like Miss Marple with a drinking problem, a pack-a-day habit and major man lust. In fact, I think she could be living my dream life." (Entertainment Weekly)

    Penelope keith a great narator
Penelope keith is a great asset to these charming stories. Just the right mix of comedy and the macarbre
    entertaining with enough twists
I love listening to penelope Keith. The characters are like old friends now! The plots are well thought out and Agatha is frustratingly real - I frequently find myself thinking 'Nooo don't do that!' as she gets herself into yet another embarrassing scrape.
    Easy and entertaining listening
If you could sum up Agatha Raisin and the Blood of an Englishman in three words, what would they be?
These Agatha Raisin novels are great for when you just want some easy and entertaining listening. Penelope Keith as always brings the characters to life.
What did you like best about this story?
The vulnerable yet strong character of Agatha.
    Entertaining

    Publisher's Summary:
The murder of women priests in the shrine town of Walsingham sucks Dr. Ruth Galloway into an unholy investigation.
Ruth's friend, Cathbad, is housesitting in Walsingham, a Norfolk village famous as a centre for pilgrimages to the Virgin Mary. One night, Cathbad sees a strange vision in the graveyard beside the cottage: a young woman dressed in blue. Cathbad thinks that he may have seen the Madonna herself, but the next morning the woman's body, dressed in a white nightdress and blue dressing gown, is found in a ditch outside Walsingham.
DCI Nelson and his team are called in and establish that the dead woman was a recovering addict being treated at a nearby private hospital. Ruth, a devout atheist, has managed to avoid Walsingham during her 17 years in Norfolk. But then an old university friend, Hilary Smithson, asks to meet her in the village, and Ruth is amazed to discover that her friend is now a priest.
Hilary has been receiving vitriolic anonymous letters targeting women priests - letters containing references to local archaeology and a striking phrase about a woman 'clad in blue, weeping for the world'. Then another woman is murdered - a priest. As Walsingham prepares for its annual Easter reenactment of the Crucifixion, the race is on to unmask the killer before he strikes again....

Great atmosphere of ecclesiastical odd stuff
I most enjoyed in this book all the Catholic and Anglican atmosphere and information about the pilgrimage town. One scene of Ruth's research into the Madonna Lactans had me hooting with laughter. That churchy theme was so well done it made up for a pretty unconvincing motive for the murderer and an excess of titillation, I felt, around the progress, or otherwise, of Ruth and Nelson's relationship. I enjoyed the narration.
    Meh...
My least favorite of the series, this book was slow to start and the denouement felt contrived: this will not prevent me from looking forward to the next one, however, as this is usually a five star series. I am so happy to see the return of narrator Jane McDowell. Clare Corbett is a fine reader but she gives a truly cringeworthy voice to Cathbad. If you haven't read the series, do start at the beginning with The Crossing Places.
Not the best in the series but still enjoyable
This book is best listened to by those who have followed Ruth from the beginning. I also missed Claire Corbett as narrator
Still, I enjoyed this book. It was like checking in on old friends
I prefer Ruth as an archaeologist .
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have enjoyed all of the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway books. The plot in this book was a bit thin and the story line was not as compelling as I wished. The conflict of women as clergy is a bit dated . Also - we don't see any evolution or resolution of Ruth's relationship with Nelson.
The narrator is good - but the change in narration for telephone conversations was strange. On the whole, I did not enjoy this book as much as prior books in the series.
What about Jane McDowells performance did you like?
    Everything except the telephone conversations.
    Good story, but...
This most recent installment in the Ruth Galloway series has a clever and engaging plot. Jane McDowell reads voices well, but I wish someone would offer her water; the mouth noises are hard to take.

The ever-delightful, insatiably curious Edinburgh philosopher and amateur sleuth returns to take on a case unlike any she's had before - this one with paranormal implications - in the tenth installment of this beloved author's consistently best-selling series. From a small town outside Edinburgh comes the news that a young boy has been recounting vivid recollections of a past life: a perfect description of an island off the coast of Scotland that he couldn't possibly know and a house there where he claims to have spent his former life. When the boy's mother asks Isabel to investigate his claims, she feels she must - of course! - help them learn the truth, and she and her husband, Jamie, set off for the island. But finding the house the boy described only leads to more complicated questions. And when she learns about the unusual story of the family who lived there, Isabel is suddenly faced with a situation of extraordinary delicacy that will require all of her skills as both sleuth and philosopher.

OK if you're already a fan
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes if the friend already likes the series, but would certainly not start someone on this one
Would you be willing to try another book from Alexander McCall Smith? Why or why not?
    I read all his series
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it gets tedious. You have to be in the mood
    Any additional comments?
The philosophical meanderings and sidetrackings are part of the charm of AMS's books, but I think he's starting to get a bit carried away... the ratio of musings to plot line is going up all the time and is nearing the breaking point (for me). I like the characters but don't need to follow them down every single mental side street...
    Delightful
Oh boy, a new Isabel Dalhousie book from Alexander McCall Smith. I know that Isabel is an acquired taste but I am hooked on this series. Isabel is the ultimate philosophizer, for whom all the world is one moral conundrum after another. In this book she finds herself investigating the odd case of a small boy who insists he recalls his reincarnation and the possibility of his returning to another life.
Also in this book we get to visit the regular characters such as Isabel, Jamie and Charlie as well as Isabels niece Cat; we visit, while Isabel wanders through her average day. Smith allows Isabel to indulge her philosophizing while taking us on a delightful journey into her life. Smith creates such interesting and unusual characters and tells important subject in such a delight, entertaining and humorous way. One of my favorite narrators, Davina Porter, narrates the book.
    a literary cup of tea
a wonderful visit again with Isabel, Jamie, Charlie, Kat and Grace, pondering the possibility of reincarnation and making hard choices.
    Listen Slowly
It takes AMcS quite a while to keep the most interesting part of the story moving and attended to. He digresses overmuch and can tend to lapse into too sweet a tooth, but in the end there is much to be learned here and savored.
    Takes awhile
I was impatient during the beginning of this book but it has a huge payoff. The plot becomes ever thicker and the moral implications are rich and ponderous.

    Publisher's Summary:
Here's Mickey Spillane and Mike Hammer in their roughest and readiesta double-strength shot of sex, violence, and action that is vintage Spillane all the way. It's a tough-guy mystery to please even the most bloodthirsty of fans!
    Members Reviews:
read this one for what it is
Mike Hammer is the hard hitting, hard drinking private investigator who is going to find the man who murdered his best friend; then take care of him before the cops do. Beautiful women fall at Mike like bowling pins and anyone in his way gets a fist or a bullet. Its New York City in the late 1940s and if you arent tough, you might be dead.
It is important to put this book and its famous author in context. It was written in 1947 and thats a long time ago now. Many things were different and many things sound pretty course to our modern ear. There is a lot of bigotry, homophobia and sexism in the dialogue. It was probably not meant to be offensive, but colloquial to give color to the scenes. Spillane started an entire genre of hard hitting crime fiction novels that are often copied to this day.
Put that aside if you can and enjoy a deliciously cheesy novel about two dimensional characters that do impossibly reckless things. In one scene, for example, Mike Hammer slams the heads of two men together like coconuts because they were ogling his girl. She giggles and tells him how safe she feels in his arms.
It might have been meant to be serious when it was written, but it comes across as improbable now, and actually quite funny. Enjoy it from a literary, historical point of view and youll have fun. Take it seriously and youll be quite disappointed. Too many clichés, plot holes and character flaws for that.
The story is performed by Mike Dennis who does a fine job of it. His voice fits the rough Mike Hammer perfectly, you can almost hear the stubble growing on his chin. His other characters are mostly fine, distinctive enough and easily discerned from each other.
Its almost impossible to put ourselves into the mindset of a 1940s reader. You will recognize so many modern detective stories in Spillanes work. Its worth it just for that perspective. Dont get offended and read this one for what it is and youll have a bit of fun.

Mike Dennis is perfect for this period gem.
Mike Hammer is a classic character. An old school Private Investigator who isn't PC and always gets his man. We see Mike Hammer for the first time in "I, the Jury". He continues as Mickey Spillane's muse for 21 novels with the latest "Murder Never Knocks" arriving in March 2016. Mike Dennis brings this first in the series from 1947 back to life. His voice tells the story as much as the words do. This is another great narration that few could do as well as Dennis.
Hammer's best friend from the World War 2 is murdered, a man who saved Hammer's life, and now the murder must die. Mike is willing to kill anyone who looks like a suspect and so the race against time and the police is on. Will Mike get the right man? Will he make a righteous kill, or will the police stop him. It's clear his conscious will not.
