Cute

This is a very good book if you are looking for a lighter mystery. No hard violence or sexual scenes. I was looking for something on the lighter side and found it here. It's a very enjoyable book. Bond Jamie Bond.

A matter of taste

I know people who love this series, and have no specific complaints. But it is not to my taste.

Boring. Woohoo sexy cast!

It just doesn't pull you in to the story... Unless you are taken by shiny. Literally everybody is a model. Wow.

I'm a big James Bond fan and I like catchy titles so when this book went on sale in the Kindle store with a low price for adding narration, I went for it. The story had plenty of action and a minor twist so it wasn't entirely predictable. It was worth what I paid for it and I did enjoy it, but not sure if I'll continue the series. I'm generally more of a romance reader and this was more mystery.

poetic justice

Where does The Narrows rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Harry Bosch is at the top of my list of favourites,,always. A plot that challenges me and pulls me right in to find this elusive chameleon.the fbi joisting with LAPD leaves room for a smile, albeit tense. All of this plot sat tightly together with briliant flow from vivd scene to vivd scene.MC created a smart way to bring some sweet promise of romance back into Harry's life for the next book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I can barely breathe out I am in so much suspense! A gifted criminal who knows the ropes and is one step ahead, MC lures the best from each character, we know that Harry is going to get his man, but the catch is a chilling journey.

Which scene was your favorite?

Harry is always so smooth. Loved the way he just rocks on up in the desert and then even gets rescued by Rachel. The almost tragic narrows and then it doesn't even end there. Where next?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

poetic justice! Has to become "a Poet's Justice"

Really missed the music in this one, especially since he was driving long distances. Some Frank Morgyn or who would he have like in this situation?

Good

The Narrows continues the Bosch series to a high standard. It ties in with previous books, however this one is in the first person for Bosch and third person for the other characters. It works well and the performance is good. The story is gripping and thoroughly enjoyable, however I felt that the ending was a slight let down - nothing massive as it ties things up, but it did take the wind out of my sails. Overall, if you've enjoyed previous Bosch books, you should enjoy this one. Recommended.

Great twists

I am always pleased with this author. This book was very captivating, and a much needed exciting new type of writing by the author. Great read.

Robinson has done it again.

This is going to be a great series. Unlike King though Jenna's potential is truly an unknown. Xe Sands was the perfect voice and it wouldn't be the same in any other voice.

Jeremy Robinson and Sean Ellis team up again, this time for an all out action fest. 15 year old Jenna Flood is having a bad day, did that sound like a tag line for 24? Good! Because the comparison is a valid and well deserved one. Someone wants Jenna dead, but why? What harm could a teenager be to the world? We join Jenna on her journey to find out why she is being hunted and what exactly everyone is so afraid of. As always, Robinson and Ellis put our 'hero' through unspeakable events. The audiobook is anything but predictable. It will keep you guessing and sitting on the edge of your seat. Once you start I think you'll be hard pressed to put it down until the end, then you'll feel the overwhelming urge to rush to the authors and ask just one question - when is the next audiobook available.

I was on the fence originally about Xe Sands as the narrator, just because I had never listened to anything by her before and I'm always a little unsure of female narrators performing male characters. The fence doesn't exist anymore..like Jenna Flood, who Sands performed brilliantly, I leaped over that fence and didn't look back.

Another Fine Heyer Mystery

While I don't find them quite up to the standards of her Regency novels, I do enjoy Heyer's mysteries, which were "modern" at the time she wrote them, in the 1930's - 1940's. Now they are period pieces, and interesting as such as well. Ulli Birve has now narrated most of Heyer's mysteries, and I have found all that I have listened to so far to be very enjoyable. I think that she "gets" the personalities of the various characters very well and conveys the spirit of the story, and the time period. And yet is easy to understand and follow the plot, which is important in a mystery.

One thing I find very helpful is that this book is "wispersync" ready, so I can go back and forth between my Kindle version and the audio version, or even read along with the narration. I enjoy "wispersync" and hope that Audible will make more of Heyer's mysteries available in this treatment, especially They Found Him Dead, which has many of the same characters as Duplicate Death.

I hope that Audible/Ulli Birve will soon release the two of Heyer's mysteries not yet available, Detection Unlimited and Penhallow.

Horrible attempt at an accent

This is not my favorite Heyer mystery, however it's a reasonable way to pass the time overall with a surprise ending that I did not see coming. If you like classic golden age mysteries, you'll probably enjoy the story pretty well. The reader is not overall horrible, she does opposite sex characters quite well, has a pleasant voice, and is able to differentiate between characters reasonably well. However, I bought this book in spite of the fact that one of the reviews on the U.K. website warned against the horrible attempt at a Scottish accent given to one of the secondary characters , because I thought they were probably being over sensitive. I was wrong. The butchering of this accent is so bad, it's really impossible to tell what accent the reader is trying to portray, and sometimes even what she is saying at all. She sounds like she's actually choking sometimes, and sometimes more like she's had a major stroke. I mean, the badness of this accent is so epic words can't describe it. This accent belongs to a secondary character, but he does have far too much to say (at least as read by this reader) towards the latter half of the book. I would recommend against this book based on that fact alone because it is very disturbing and unpleasant to listen to.

A good mystery. The author did not get so caught up with creating a "who done it" that the ending was impossible to believe.

Great mystery but even better football story

Phillip Kerr's Bernie Gunther stories are grat reads,but I like his other novels even better. As an American who knows more then he needs to know about American football, I learned a great deal about English football and the Premier League. The mystery is very interesting and realistic. Kerr doesn't fall into the nonsense endings so many mystery writers rely on now with over the top unbelievable twists. I hope Kerr does a mystery about American Football there is so much money and corruption to explore.

Philip Kerr, the C-word and football

I love Philip Kerr, his cynical humor, the stories, his heroes. This novel is the first I've read that's not set in or around war. Instead, it's deep in the world of football, or soccer for those of us who are American. I'm not into soccer so I don't if the facts are right but it's a veritable assemblage of historical facts and events from soccer in the 90' and early 2000'. It's fun.

Kerr's main characters have always had, to put it mildly, a deep appreciation of women, especially those who can selfishly and creatively gratify their men. There's so little give back that it's a wonder the hero often finds himself abandoned.

I have a problem with Kerr's liberal use of the C-word to insult women and men alike. It's an ugly, sexist word, perhaps the most degrading insult a man can use. To delete that word, used hundreds of times, would be the one thing I would gladly change to improve the book.

Being a football lover not enough

Would you try another book from Philip Kerr and/or Andrew Wincott?

A very simple minded mystery tagged on to an obsession with Premier League football. I'm a fan of the latter, but lots of that couldn't save the weak story. Regret my credit. But other reviewers seem to like it....

Great 'window' into football

What made the experience of listening to January Window the most enjoyable?

I just love the way Kerr weaves the story and the inside into the world of the current football. As a football fan I was very intrigued by the story and hope for more to come with the Scott Manson character - the Bernie Gunther of football.

Love the Series, Hate This Book

I love the Samantha Sweet series, but this installment was just terrible. I feel like I should re-listen to this one because I can't believe it was so bad, but I can't bring myself to give it another try. It seems as if Sam spends the entire book trying to fill her time by cooking or cleaning or going to the store. Do you remember when Samantha Sweet was a successful and very busy business owner? Connie Shelton doesn't.

The storyline revolves around an investigation that seems non-existant. Sam is constantly worried about her husband's safety (where did that come from?) I can't even remember one thing that may have happened at the bakery. Two huge plot points are so incredibly obvious that it was almost shocking. And the absolute worst part has to do with the box. There is no way to talk about that without spoilers, so: SPOILER ALERT. SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT KEEP READING!

If you've read the series, you know that in a previous book someone was willing to have someone killed to get their hands on the box, yet in this book, Sam decides to try to find out more about the box and / or the woman who gave it to her. This leads to Sam taking the box to a lunch date with a stranger and showing her the box in public. What the what? Previously, Sam actually hid the box in her air vent so as not be be killed or injured for it, but now she's all "Hey I'll just show this to someone I don't know in a cafe, no big deal". I cannot get over just how ridiculous that idea is. Sam would never do that, just as she wouldn't randomly contact people to ask them if they have any information on Bertha Martinez and an artifact she had in her possession. I just don't understand how CS could have written any of that.

The box storyline mixed with Stepford Wife Sam and Do Nothing Beau make this book terrible. I just hated it and am seriously reconsidering moving forward with this series.

I found the narrator incredibly distracting, mostly because all of the characters were caricatures. The women sounded like men in drag, the tough guys sounded like Popeye, the Marine sounded like Scooby Dum, etc...

Hate/love relationship with this audio book

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, but I found it surprisingly hard to not finish. The central plot revolves around an ancient mystery, and I found I'd been hooked.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not suspenseful to me, but I got intensely curious about who the "baddies" were. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble believing that the main characters were endangered when they were supposed to be -- you never worry much about the Road Runner no matter HOW fiendish Wile E. Coyote is being.

What didnt you like about Andy Caploes performance?

Andy tried too hard. He portrayed the characters as stereotypes. For example, one of the main female characters sounded like a New York "Valley Girl" and one of the main male characters sounded like a stereotypical "dumba-- Marine." I resent both these stereotypes, and that definitely irritated me throughout the book. In all fairness, though, the characters were pretty stereotypical anyway, so perhaps Andy's not entirely to blame.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes...it'd be a decent 120 minutes' entertainment, maybe with Clooney as the leading man. Subject to one condition: I wouldn't see the movie if I'd already read or heard the book. Again, the main point for me was finding who the bad guys were and their motivation.

Could have been a lot shorter, plot complexities notwithstanding.

Surprisingly good!

The first book I have experienced by this author, I was fascinated by the intrigueing story line and the depth of the characters. The narrator did a superb job of portraying both male and female voices.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fight Dirty to be better than the print version?

This author is not for me, but I love Ms Dawe's narration so I purchased this book.

Ms Dawe does a great job on male and children's voices. She did a great job on this story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This book is the story of fighting for justice. It had a good outline/story and perhaps a bit better editing would compel me to seek more work from this author. However, it would only be if Ms Dawe read it.

ugh. this narrator is aweful!

every single story she narrates is ruined. every sentence is not the end of the world. but to listen to her, you would think the world was ending!

The worst $9.00 spent

The narrator "spit out" every word with no emotion & the cadence of her voice was very irritating but I wanted to hear what happened to Morgan & struggled through to the end. It could have been a good story.

Waste of Time

Far fetched story from beginning to end. Narrator's habit of raising her voice at the end of each sentence drove me crazy.

Narration was well done. Morgan is complex and an interesting character. Very good read. Definitely need more.

This installment was a bit predictable

I've been reading this series since book 1 and I've enjoyed them all, however as time goes on each book gets more predictable, and this one was the worst of all. It's almost as if the author just got tired of trying to make it exciting and it came out all so typical.

Of course Haley had 2 of the most handsome men in town fall in her lap & pining after her.. Of course she conveniently stumbles upon 2 suspects making secret phone calls which she overhears... Of course the second she's in trouble Mona pops up out of the clear blue to save her.. Of course someone who isn't even her friend shares confidential info with her which she could lose her job over..Of course she's smarter than the resident Pathologist and disproves her years of medical knowledge (twice now). It's just at a place where I found myself thinking how unrealistic it all is. There was not 1 time in this book where a problem arose that was left in limbo for a reader to hang onto. Everything got too neatly tied up in a bow too soon.

It's not that I didn't like this book, because I think it's an "ok" listen, I just think there are better choices out there for cozies with more developed characters, more interactive plot lines etc. I hope the next book gets better!

The Murders at Astaire Castle is a fantastic, adventure (and murder packed!) audio book that you don't want to hit pause - you don't want to miss what happens next to Mac Faraday and Gnarly!

This novel was intense, full of mystery and suspense. You need to give the audio book (and I am sure the novel as well) your full attention. There are lots of murders and information that you can easily miss if you are not paying full attention. I found myself going back at some points to ensure I had key figures right (editors, authors, etc..). The story evolved in such a way that I did not expect! What began as a superstition that you thought was easily solved, turned into a cycle of past murders that prompted a new set of murders! Just when you think the story can not possibly make another twist, it did! It was very well written and thought out. The ending was nothing what I expected but was incredible. It literally blew my mind!

Gnarly (you have to give such a cute character some love!), was his usually spunky and hard working dog! He makes me laugh with his antics (garbage dump diving) but is such a hard working, intelligent partner. He played a big part as usual in this novel.

The Murders at Astaire Castle was an intense, suspenseful murder mystery that you will truly love! It is a definite must read.

The more I read of this author, the more I enjoy her. Amusing novels with solid mysteries that always include numerous suspects and bodies alike. The twists and turns this time take us to a haunted castle, unsolved old murders, a missing writer, a mysterious wolf, and more. Its exciting to explore the castle while trying to figure out who might be the killer. Great fun!
