Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From celebrated authors Amy Hempel and Jill Ciment writing as A. J. Rich, a smart, thrilling, sexy, and emotionally riveting novel of psychological suspense about an accomplished woman involved with a man who proves to be an imposter.
Morgan Prager, at age 30, is completing her thesis on victim psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan. She is newly engaged to Bennett, a seductive but possessive and secretive man. She returns from class one day to find Bennett mauled to death, and her dogs - a Great Pyrenees and two pit bulls she has rescued - covered in blood. Bewildered and devastated that her dogs could have committed such violence, she worries that she might suffer from one of the syndromes she studies: pathological altruism, when selfless acts do more damage than good.
When Morgan tries to locate Bennett's parents to tell them about their son's hideous death, she discovers he was not the man he said he was. Everything he has told her - where he was born, where he lives and works - was a lie. In fact he has several fiancées and fits the clinical definition of a sociopath. And then, one by one, these other women are murdered. Suddenly Morgan's research into Bennett takes on the urgency of survival: To stay alive, she must find out who is killing the women Bennett was closest to.
Unsettling and highly suspenseful, this is a brilliant collaboration between two outstanding writers.

    Too Easy
If you are used to serious intricacy you won't find it here. I expected more...
    Ludicrous and annoying
I am at a loss to understand how two experienced writers could produce such a mess. I caution potential readers not to be taken in by the premise, which is interesting, nor by the back story about the novel's genesis, which is poignant. The book itself is a hot mess.
Implausible, nonsensical and just plain bizarre. Here are just a few examples: A 30-year old protagonist whose cultural reference points are consistently those of people of the authors' generation. Passages of undigested psychological content just plopped in with not even an attempt to integrate them into the action. A denouement that is as perfunctory as it is unsatisfying. A villain who it is established very early is known by different people by different names, and yet, everyone seems to refer to him by the name by which he is known to the protagonist. At the conclusion, the murderer is charged in New York City with several crimes and murders, even though one of the murders was committed in Massachusetts, one on Long Island and one in Canada.
The narrator diminishes this book and story.
What disappointed you about The Hand That Feeds You?
I am simultaneously reading and listening to this book and am enjoying the story. I find the narrator totally inappropriate for this book, however. She sounds like she is reading a bedtime story or preparing a patient for hypnosis while saying words about about very traumatic events. Because I read many detective novels and mysteries, I will avoid books narrated by her in the future.
    super read
I heard about this book on npr. (well I think it was npr) and just had to read it.
Don't worry about the death that kicks off the story there is tons of dog love in this book.

    Has interruptions
interesting story interrupted by recipes that completely take away from what is happening in it
    Good book
The story was a light mystery. For me it was a great change from all the heavy sex & cursing that is in so many of the mystery /thrillers. But if you are looking for more complex this isn't for you. I loved it . It did start a little slow & the receipts intermixed are a little distracting but I got use to them.
    High school reunion murder
This installment of the series had a really interesting plot twist which I didn't see coming. I did sort of suspect who the killer might be, but I definitely didn't know why. It's nice to be surprised in a cozy & the plot moves along at a good pace.
There wasn't nearly enough Liddy & Mona though, and same with Randy. Aaron was present even less. It was a strange dynamic as the attention shifted more to some of the other side players with the "popular girl" clique. Not bad, but if you follow this series you'll notice that change.
Hailey was also a little more immature & irresponsible than usual...She acts like a 5 year old with Bruce & The laughing fit during a funeral was irritating.
Overall I wish the core cast was more present to make Hailey more likable. But it's still a great plot & wonderful narration as usual!
    Still good but ...
It's time for more character development. Hailey is sounding more frenetic than capable in this one and I'd really like to begin to hear more from Aaron.. He's more of a marshmallow pussy cat than a man with any depth or even a true companion. It's like he's on the periphery of her life. I missed the usual banter about and from Mona on life, her family though the lesbian comment is pretty funny, and her job.
    Fun mystery with recipes
I have really enjoyed all of the books in this series. Fun, cozy mysteries that usually keep me guessing, with a few tasty food & cocktail recipes interspersed. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

    Very, very disappointing!
Against All Enemies is the 7th and most recent novel in the Jonathan Grave series of espionage thrillers. The two prior novels in the series, High Treason and End Game, were excellent but not outstanding. The storyline of Against All Enemies has real potential, but Gilstrap disappoints in developing the story.
Basil Sands is a decent narrator, but not one of the best. His narration is excellent.
    Fell short of expectation.
I loved the other books in this series, but this story line was off. It started well with Boomer but took a turn that was less than exciting.
    ok
not as good ásothersin series. Like narrator as usual he's 1 of my favorite narrators!

    sent this book back.
I made the decision to return the book as the narrater came across as boring. There were too many discrepancies in the accents of various characters and all blended into one.
Also the story itself wasn't gripping enough to enable me to continue despite the narration.
    Lots of suspects
Enjoyed the narration and the story. A nice respite for a few hours. While I considered the final fiend as a suspect I dismissed the suspect for other possibilities as the story unfolded. Enjoying the development of the main characters and looking forward to getting to learn more about them with book 2. I need to find out why Kate changed her name from Kelly.
Solid British Crime Mystery, Kidnapped Baby
Detective Sergeant Kate Redman is assigned to the case of a murdered nanny and kidnapped three month old baby boy . . . the baby's mother is devastated, and the father is too busy taking phone calls to keep his business on track to get very involved with the case . . . Kate uncovers plenty of skeletons in the closet, so to speak . . . but her gut instinct tells her that her partner, DS Olbeck is on the wrong track . . . all in all this is a great murder/crime mystery . . . I could have done without the gay relationship of DS Olbeck and his partner, Joe . . . but it wasn't a huge part of the story . . . I will definitely listen to the next in the series . . .
    An intriguing read. Great characters.
I felt compassion for all the characters, even the shady ones. Character development is important to me, and it met my expectations there. The story did connect the dots and it all made sense in the end. Some stories leave you hanging to much and I hate that. This story delivered in those 2 areas. The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 is because some stories take your breath away and stay with you years after you read it. This story wasn't like that, but it was a good solid read, thus, 4 out of 5.
Okay story, very predictable, horrible narration!!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
tThe story was okay, I guess I should not complain since it was an addition after the kindle book was free, but I did actually pay for the narration, so my complaint with that is valid. As far as the book/story goes, I will not make the mistake of reading another by this author. I have learned my lesson. I listened, because I was on the freeway already, but I was not made richer by the time spent.

    Title: Solitude Creek
    Subtitle: A Kathryn Dance Novel
    Author: Jeffery Deaver
    Narrator: January LaVoy
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-15
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 487 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Jeffery Deaver, "the master of manipulation" (Associated Press) and "the most creative, skilled and intriguing thriller writer in the world" (Daily Telegraph, UK), returns with the new, long-awaited Kathryn Dance thriller.
A tragedy occurs at a small concert venue on the Monterey Peninsula. Cries of "fire" are raised, and, panicked, people run for the doors only to find them blocked. A half dozen people die, and others are seriously injured. But it was the panic and the stampede that killed; there was no fire.
Kathryn Dance - a brilliant California Bureau of Investigation agent and body-language expert - discovers that the stampede was caused intentionally and that the perpetrator, a man obsessed with turning people's own fears and greed into weapons, has more attacks planned. She and her team must race against the clock to find where he will strike next before more innocents die.
    Critic Reviews:
"Narrator January LaVoy excels in her timing, pacing, and sensitivity to the myriad subtleties in the story. She delivers children's voices of both genders extraordinarily well, and the wide array of adult characters allows ample scope for her ability to develop multiple voices for the complex dialogue.... LaVoy is so good as the lead that listeners will want her to be the voice of Kathryn Dance in all future publications." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Okay Story.... Overly Dramatic
Solitude Creek is a good story - in theory - in that it's reasonable and very plausible for a disaster to happen as a result of a false cry of "fire" in a small concert hall. However, the over-the-top description of the catastrophes was way WAY too much. Maybe I would have preferred less dramatic descriptions and less use of the overly-dramatic voice used by the reader.
Yes, people will panic and people will run for the doors and people will be seriously hurt and people could die if the doors are locked. But the descriptions was read in a far too dramatic a voice which soon became vey irritating. For such a small venue as described, the blood bath described, along with that voice, was not believable.
    way too boring
I kept drifting away. finally I just quit. There was no mystery here. I guess enough to make it be called a mystery.
    Good book!
As with so many of Jeffrey Deaver's books, this one offers a lot to think about -- I have never thought much about stampedes, or panic in crowds, how or why they happen, but that's changed. Among the several such situations Deaver works into this story, ALL seem perfectly possible, as he tells them. Maybe it would be a good think to be a little more aware of the potential, when in crowded venues. What a unique plot element -- Deaver is so good at that!
I originally liked the Kathryn Dance books because of the setting -- the Monterey Peninsula is home base for me, and it's fun to see the characters driving and walking familiar streets, eating in familiar restaurants, and going to local events. Obviously Deaver has spent a great deal of time living there -- you can't get that accurate with just a visit. The only thing that doesn't ring true is that none of his characters have any trouble at all getting a parking place.

With shocking twists and riveting suspense, 14th Deadly Sin proves yet again that when it comes to suspense fiction, in the words or Jeffrey Deaver: "Nobody does it better" than James Patterson.
    Critic Reviews:
"Patterson and Paetro are at their best here, weaving a number of plots together to create a novel that dips and flows across genre lines.... A series that shows no signs of fatigue or flagging." (BookReporter.com)
"I can't believe how good Patterson is, whether he's doing a Washington police yarn or traveling a different road with a female narrator. He is always on the mark. I have never begun a Patterson book and been able to put it down." (Larry King, USA Today)

    disappointed
What disappointed you about 14th Deadly Sin?
No ending! Story line very weak, short book
What could James Patterson and Maxine Paetro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
had an ending. More substance. I think i've just outgrown the author. I have been listening to so many good book with depth, this was just weak. Prob my last unless Tandoori has another in the series.
What about January LaVoys performance did you like?
Voice is fine, but I can't stand the dramatic music before an event. Lame.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disappointment

Ann B Ross has done it again
Another great book. Missed not having Etta Mae but Ann never fails to entertain me.
    Love Miss Julia!
If you find yourself laughing out loud to a book them you know you have a great writer. I am a true fan of Miss Julia books. I've read several and listened to most all of them. Cynthia Darlow does an excellent job with the voices. If she isn't reading it's just blah. Keep them coming Ann Ross!
    Just plain fun!
This series is a delight. The reader is marvelous and you feel like you are listening to an old fashioned radio show. I laugh out loud at the crazy antics of Miss Julia.
Not my favorite Miss Julia book
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, I listened to this audiobook while doing household chores (i.e. preparing meals; folding laundry; while eating breakfast/lunch) so this book made these activities not so boring.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Relief that the story was over.
What about Cynthia Darlows performance did you like?
Cynthia Darlow does a good job of portraying the voice of Miss Julia, although at times her performance is a bit too melodramatic and overdone for my taste.
Was Miss Julia Lays Down the Law worth the listening time?
Yes, but only because it entertained me while performing mundane activities.
    Any additional comments?
I have listened to every Miss Julia book and of all the books in this series, this one was my least favorite. There was too much repetition throughout this book. I hope the next Miss Julia book will be better.
Miss Julia Lay's Down The Law
Loved the book. I enjoy all of the Miss Julia Books. I have read all of them and look forward to the next one. The narrator did a job job.

Samuel Hoenig answers questions for a living. And as a man with Asperger's syndrome, his unique personality helps him ferret out almost any answer there is. But his latest question is a rather odd one: who stole a preserved head from the Garden State Cryonics Institute?
Arriving at the scene of the crime accompanied by his new colleague, Ms. Washburn, Samuel finds that what started out as a theft has escalated to murder. With suspects and motives emerging at a rapid rate, one final question remains: can Samuel's powers of deduction uncover a killer in the face of overwhelming odds?

    Surprisingly good!
I wasn't sure what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed a new twist on a mystery story. The fact that the narrator/hero has Asperger's syndrome was used quite effectively to tell the story from a unique perspective. I was pleasantly surprised. The only real flaw in my view is that the police were portrayed as unrealistically ineffective, but it kept the tone of the story light and a bit humorous. I look forward to the next book in the series!
    The curious incident of....
If you ever wanted to know what would happen to Christopher Boone(The curious incident of the dog in the night-time) if he grew up in america and became a detective(somewhat) then this book is for you. A very endearing character. looking forward to the next one. also, very well narrated.
    It is "Asperger's" NOT "Asberger's"!!!!
Since we have to cases of Asperger's Autism in our home, I thought I knew what to expect. This is a great little mystery. I am very impressed with Samuel and was thrilled the way this case turned out for him. If you are the least interested in the way an Asperger's mind works, this is a good place to start!! I can't wait for the next book!!! Bring it on Audible!!
    Great fun!
As a clinical psychologist, I enjoy books in which the authors express what I consider as psychological truths. No Aspergergers' expert I; however I thoroughly enjoyed the description from Samuel ' s perspective. Also appreciated the humor throughout. Thank you!
    Some whimsy
Tho no actual humor. The Rosie Project and 600 Hours of Edward are more humorous adventurous books that have a protagonist with aspergers. This one does have adventure however, while the characters attempted to solve the mystery. For some reason I have never cared much for mysteries.....
