    Publisher's Summary:
A serial killer is on the loose in Naples, Florida, an enclave of wealth and privilege on the Southwest Gulf Coast. The murders have been disguised as accidents, but when Police Chief Wade Hansen becomes suspicious, Mayor Charles Beaumont orders him to apprehend the killer before the truth becomes public knowledge.
Hansen reaches out to retired Chicago homicide detective Jack Starkey. Starkey, who has been shot three times - twice on the job and once in the army - is enjoying every cop's retirement dream. But at the same time, he misses the thrill of the hunt, so he accepts the job.
As the bodies stack up like cordwood, Starkey searches for anything that the victims might have in common. He decides to go undercover as a member of the Naples elite in an attempt to get himself noticed by the killer, drawing the attention of Count Vasily Petrovich, who operates a hedge fund named for the Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sank in a hurricane off the Florida Keys in 1622. When Starkey discovers that all of the victims so far had been investors in that fund, and that the count is actually a member of the Russian Mafia, he suspects that the Atocha Fund might have a substantial penalty for early withdrawal.
Meanwhile, William Stevens, a Chicago Tribune police reporter, has been writing a series of best-selling crime novels based on his pal Starkey's career. Starkey's alter ego is Chicago homicide detective Jack Stoney.
Things are not what they seem, plot twists abound, and the bullets begin to fly. Starkey, in desperation, reaches out to the fictional Stoney to help him catch the killer.

The Rocking Horse, Gloria Zachgo's spellbinding suspense novel, charts the harrowing emotional journey of one family that is torn asunder, then magically drawn together again.

    Not bad
Would you listen to The Rocking Horse again? Why?
Not really what I usually read/listen to, but this wasn't bad. My attention kinda meandered a couple times, but was always brought back, and the narrator kept a smooth steady pace and was easy to listen to. A little more inflection when switching between characters would of been nice, but still did a good job.
Have you listened to any of Katie Ottens other performances before? How does this one compare?
    I have not
    Excellent Story!

    a fun tour of Morocco
I was ready to give up on this series and had even given the last novel a pass, however I decided to give it one more try, bought this book for my Kindle, and was glad I did. Glad to see more of Sherlock, glad to see them having a grand adventure, and glad to see a few old friends come back in this novel.
However, although "Garment of Shadows" was far better than the last few novels in this series, I was still a bit disappointed that Ms King has not returned completely to the spirited interplay between Sherlock and Mary that was such a joy to read in the early books and which her fans (myself included) really appreciated.
First the good stuff: Ms King does her research quite well, and this was a nice portrayal of 1920s Morocco under Lyautey's tenure. I know Morocco very well indeed and this was both sympathetic and colourful, evoking the street life of this medieval city. And yet, I was a bit disappointed that with all the good descriptions and research that formed the backbone of this book, that she had not looked into the Arabic translations that she threw in from time to time throughout the book; some were accurate but others were not and I found this really hard to take. Also, Moroccan Arabic is dialectal, and while based on classical Arabic, it combines Berber (and because of the French protectorate years, also French), therefore both Sherlock and Mary would have stood out like sore thumbs and not blended in (particularly Sherlock in his guise of a traveling fqih) if they were speaking Middle Eastern Arabic! I may be nitpicking here but Ms King's other research was pretty good so it seemed a bit of a failing for me.
I was very glad that Mary and Sherlock are back together again (well, sort of...) and that they were equals in this novel. However, (and I may be wrong here) I really do feel that her legion of fans miss the spirited verbal sparring and tension (sexual and otherwise) of the earlier novels. Such emotion came through in the writing with a single glance, a touch on the arm, a sort of breathless anticipation of what will or could be, or even something as simple as the emotions when Sherlock tenderly brushes Mary's hair. I do not think anyone wants something overt but it just seems a shame that Ms King portrays this dynamic pair as having sunk into some sort of domesticated, boring personal relationship while their mystery-solving lives are fraught with danger and adventure. And yes, I think that they can have it all.
Nevertheless, I am so glad that Sherlock is back in form in this story. He is a fascinating character and Ms King did him justice in earlier novels; and I do hope that he and Mary continue to be equals, playing off each other in spirited interchange and off on their adventures again.

    Good read
As the husband of a National Certified Psychotherapist and father of a retired police officer I am glad to see a story that shows how law enforcement works closely with other agencies to help solve personal and private problems. The book is well written and characters are well developed. Each character shows his/her individuality and personality. Good story.
I like stories that take place in Florida.
There are some glitches in the Kendle edition (typos and erratic paragraph indentions) that can easily corrected.
    Recommended.

    Fun read!
This is a series worth following
The opening scene had me hooked immediately. Although the book's title mentions Grace, the other characters in the book are equally intriguing.
Apart from following the lives of these characters and unraveling the story around the missing husband, readers are offered insights into the roles investigative police officers, psychologists, social workers and speech pathologists play in the justice and mental health systems. We see dedicated professionals who go beyond just doing their jobs. They care.
As a bonus, we get to follow some of these characters through Valerie Allen's other books. This is a series worth following.

    Good story
I liked the story. Easy and fast read. Kept you guessing until the end. Narration was excellent. He spoke clearly and was easy to follow. Good listen overall.
    Great book but too short
Would you listen to Winter Wonderland again? Why?
I really enjoyed the book but was left longing for more. Hopefully his next book will be longer.
    A Short Read.
This book was a good read, it my interest all the way to the end I was surprised how it ended. The narrator was also entertaining and interesting to listen to. Continue with the good writing.
    Unexpectedly good!
What did you love best about Winter Wonderland?
The polka dot car, of course.
What other book might you compare Winter Wonderland to and why?
Male version of Stephanie Plum a little bit. Little being key word. Since it was rather short.
What about Darren Marlars performance did you like?
He was superb! Just carried the story right along with a pleasing voice
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I guess my biggest reaction is that I was so surprised such a short book could be as good as it was. I still like the longer books and more character building and so on but was very pleased with this. I look forward to more.
    Any additional comments?

    Nice, Solid Suspense Short Story
WINTER WONDERLAND was an enjoyable listen. It had solid characters. Trouble seems to follow Dallas, the protagonist wherever he goes but it pays off. Although a little cliche, I liked the character and name of Sandy Beech and his sisters, Virginia and Myrtle. T. LEE HARRIS wrote a good little mystery and I'd like to hear more. I wish it'd been a little longer but hopefully there's a book two from this.
DARREN MARLAR did a nice job narrating this story. He had a good read on the characters and their nuances. I liked his voice, he was well-paced and overall made this a better listen.

Length: 12 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-06-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
After a botched terrorist plot, a coast guard agent uncovers a terrifying threat against America.
The plan is simple. The moment the Homeland Security adviser reaches the middle of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, a team of suicide bombers will rush his car, killing him and destroying the bridge. But as the plot's mastermind watches from afar, he sees only two small explosions. The bridge has survived; the plan has failed. He will have to find another way to bring terror to the United States - and he's about to get a fearsome opportunity.
Investigating the attack, coast guard agent Erik Westman meets a dying air force pilot who claims to have dumped a nuclear bomb off the coast of Delaware in 1967. It's still there under 30 feet of water, waiting to be used by anyone mad enough to detonate it. If Westman can't reach the weapon before the terrorists, the nation's capitol will burn.
    Members Reviews:
    Erik Westman
I loved this book, not flashy James bond or anything, but a very good read, I definitely recommend it if you like mysteries, spy novels or are interested in the Coast Guard.
Wish there were more in this series
    action mano vs. mano thriller
Gabor Turko knows his terrorist cell of Pakistani is running late in their assignment to blow up the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The homeland Security Advisor to the White House is on the case but what he is unaware of is that his team was involved in a car accident and fled the scene just before a minor explosion occurred, killing a family, but not the target. Coast Guard Admiral DePayse assigns Investigative Service Agent Warren Officer Erik Westman to the joint investigative team.
Not long afterward, a guilt laden near death former Air Force pilot Burt Shilling confesses that he and his crew dumped a nuclear bomb into the DEEPKILL off the Delaware coast. Though official DC leaders insists this is the rambling of an ailing man, Turko and his associates want to see if this is true and if they can retrieve the bomb. If this takes place, , a weapon of mass destruction will be in the hands of a terrorist who wants to destroy America. Not willing to take any chances Westman tries to stop the terrorists who believe they have nothing to lose.
DEEPKILL is an action thriller that grips the audience from the very first page up the until the final battle. The fast-paced story line moves rather quickly as the Air Force remains in denial while terrorists take a chance that a bomb was dropped off the eastern seaboard. Erik is a terrific hero, but it is Gabor who captures the reader's attention with his cavalier nonchalance over killing innocents to reach a target. Fans of tense mano vs. mano thrillers will appreciate Michael Kilian's hyperspeed novel.
    Harriet Klausner
    a pleasant surprise
This book is fine. I'm delighted to "find" author Kilian and look forward to reading some of his earlier books. Deepkill is great for the beach or riding the bus to work with a big plot but human-sized characters. The story is set in the Delaware Bay area--ashore and afloat--and the hero is a Coast Guardsman. You can't get better than that.

    Good one for learning Spanish
This book had a great plot, and as a low intermediate Spanish student I found it had enough unfamiliar words to keep me learning several new words and phrases on each page, but not so many that I got discouraged. I read it on my kindle phone app, which connects to Google translate, so it's easy to look things up. I can't speak to the quality of the writing, but I did enjoy reading it.

    Great listening experience
    Any additional comments?
This is the third audiobook I've listened to by the same author/narrator team. Disappointed there are no more!
    Very Dark & Heavy Material
    Sins of the Father
This is a book about a complex situation that a lot of us know but don't know the intimate details of the situation.
"Jane Doe" is found, after an accident, but she has amnesia. "Jane Doe Junior" is with her, a young girl who only communicates through the toys and language of the caseworker/nurse assigned to her.
Valerie Allen is thorough without being overbearing with too many details in this work. Near the end of the book, I felt it was a bit unresolved. This is not a negative. It left me to think a challenge that a clear resolution and epilogue would not have given me.
Sheila Cavalette performs masterfully. There is not one thing that would take away from her five-star performance.
I encourage you to read Suffer the Little Children before Sins of the Father, but it is not necessary. Each book stands alone.
Notes: This book has some strong and descriptive situations regarding both mental and physical abuse (mentions of rape.) This is geared toward adult listeners.
While this is categorized as a 'Mystery Thriller Suspense, the material is really heavy and not something I would want to listen to - only to pass the time or relaxing on a beach. I believe it is meant for a more somber and mature audience.
*I received this work as a gift for my unbiased review; good, bad or meh. I've written all 3 kinds.
