Dr. Gilbert Upchurch is the Edward R. Woodward Professor and Chair of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine and the 2019 president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. He completed his general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and his endovascular fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.  He presently holds four active NIH grants for studies examining the molecular basis and gender differential for aortic aneurysm formation. He is also active in clinical practice and has contributed to the advancement of endovascular technology via multiple device trials. He is an associate editor of Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery and has given over 400 invited lectures, which include 150 visiting professorships. In addition to his impressive track record as a surgeon-scientist, he has used his academic leadership roles as a platform for mentorship and education. He has won numerous awards as an educator and takes a particular interest in adapting education to the learning needs of a younger generation of surgeons.
