  • Hustle & Faux

    In This Episode:

    • Keeping up with the Jones' and living the Pinterest-perfect life is exhausting.
    • This issue brings the extreme parts of toxic masculinity and toxic femininity to the forefront.
    • All extremes are dangerous and that's why we are talking about harmony.
    • It starts with getting very clear about what you want. Also, it's okay to say "I've tried it, I didn't like it, and now I want to try something else.
    • You have to know yourself first.
    • Give yourself grace for outlier experiences. There may be nights when you have to work late, and there may be nights you just want to watch a movie with friends or loved ones.
    • When we speak in absolutes we often trigger shame in others. Like: successful entrepreneurs wake up at 4 AM.
    • Sarah talks about something she has observed in many female entrepreneurs. The fact that the pace is not sustainable and they end up breaking instead of changing the system.
    • ASK FOR HELP. Don't let yourself be a busy martyr.
    • If hustle were a virus what would be the ingredients in the vaccine? We break it down.

  • The One with the CBD Farm "her"

    In This Episode:

    • Today we talk with Janie Dickens who is the founder and CEO of Healing Green Farms. A seed-to-bottle CBD company.
    • Janie’s background is in education and consulting for children with special needs. Janie was introduced to CBD products years ago while searching for an alternative to prescription medication for her young daughter’s anxiety.
    • In her work with special needs children, she has seen the potential of the product for helping in a variety of contexts. Because she has always felt a strong connection to her farming roots, becoming a hemp grower on her family farm (she’s a third-generation owner) is the perfect synthesis of all that’s she’s interested in, both personally and professionally!
    • In 2018 the farm bill passed which allowed everyone to grow CBD, Janie had land and it was recommended that she grow hemp and she started to do her research. She decided to grow in her greenhouse.
    • Hemp absorbs everything from the environment, it acts like a sponge and soaks up toxins. That's why they wanted to plant in the greenhouse and not in the ground to control the quality of the product.
    •  The law in North Carolina says that hemp needs to be less than 0.3% of THC, which is the chemical that makes marijuana.
    • Janie talks about life on the farm, how they care for their plants, play them music, give them Reiki, etc.
    • Janie shares a story about people breaking into her greenhouse and stealing from her. They think she is doing something illegal so she won't do anything, but that's not true.
    • They grow more than just hemp at Healing Green Farms, including roses, and blueberries.
    • We talk about farm Joe and how he came to help at the farm.

  • Flashback Friday: Matthew Coppedge - Amalgamation of passion & purpose

He went to UNC-Chapel Hill for his undergrad and did an internship with the Charlotte Hornets in their marketing department. He then fell in love with economic development and worked in downtown Durham for 12 years revitalizing downtown.

He then decided to try his hand at modeling. He posted every day to his Instagram and the things that got the most likes were him in a three-piece suit. So he gained thousands of followers and signed some deals as an influencer. Matthew shares that this is a tough industry to make it as a social media influencer. Landing deals have been difficult but he has seen some real success.

We talk about the life of a social media influencer. Matthew believes it is more about content creation than just being sponsored for work you're already doing.

Matthew talks about the work that he and his team were able to do in Durham to change the perception of the city. It was a rewarding time to see the changes made in the community and that's why he took the job in Gardner which is growing exponentially.

We talk about the Smoffice (The world's smallest office) and the efforts Matthew and his team made to help get the word out on the work they were doing in Durham. Tech Crunch and Fast Company picked up the story and it went viral. They were nominated for the most original chamber project in the world and won!

We talk about the power of community. What it means to Matthew and how it leads to real growth.

"We're building Garner for the next 50-75 years. That's what we are doing right now. Garner is one of the only communities that is a little farther behind most of the other cities in the triangle and we can build what we want." -Matthew

"Life is short. Just do things." -Matthew
