On Friday, the tech website Motherboard reported that a controversial memo by an unnamed Google employee was circulating within the company. Entitled “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber”, the document criticizes the company’s diversity efforts and culture stating “We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism”. The author also links the lack of women in technology to ‘biological causes’. On Saturday, company’s brand new diversity chief, Danielle Brown, fired back in an internal company statement. She wrote that the company is committed to open dialogue and political discussion, but added that such discourse “needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws." We discuss the memo, and the reaction to it inside and outside the company.
