Please don’t expect to find a polished product. The output is lower tier but the authenticity is hopefully as good as it gets. 🦔

Gretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a time. She shares with you snippets from books about history, art and literature and regularly takes you on adventures to new locations, to explore churches, cathedrals and architecture. We’ve reached over 90,000 downloads.
I suggest you don’t try to listen in order, unless you’re very committed. Dip in and out, choosing an episode based on the title information. Whether you are interested in history, literature, poetry or one-to-one chatting, I try to give you something that will interest you. This is a podcast for the curious, the kind and - possibly - the suffering or lonely.

Thank you for joining me today. I am optimistic about the week ahead and I hope you are too. The cloud has finally shifted here in England and that makes an awful lot of difference.
I’ll try to give a 🦔update soon. I’m putting food out for them every night and it completely disappears! 😄

How are you this blustery autumn day? There are so many forms of art that help peel off the scrub around one’s heart, apply a balm, then gently recoat with a protective layer. Unless we tend these sore, scarred spots, we cannot be well.
Whether it’s words from a novel or poem, from a painting, or the harmonies of an aria, the arts allow us to walk the walk of healing, support and relief.

A poem by Henry Noel (Elizabethan Courtier)Gaze not on Swans
Gaze not on swans in whose soft breast
A full hatcht beauty seems to nest,
Nor snow which falling from the sky,
Hovers in its virginity.
Gaze not on roses though new blown
Grac’d with a fresh complexion,
Nor lilly which no subtle bee
Hath rob'd by kissing chemistry.
Gaze not on that pure milky way
Where night vies splendour with the day,
Nor pearls whose silver walls confine
The riches of an Indian mine.
For if my emperesse appears
Swans moultring dy, snow melts to tears,
Roses do blush and hang their heads,
Pale lillyes shrink into their beds;
The milky way rides past to shrowd
Its baffled glory in a clowd,
And pearls do climb into her eare,
To hang themselves for envy there.
So have I seene stars big with light,
Proud lanthorns to the moone-ey’d night,
Which when Sol's rays were once display'd,
Sunk in their sockets and decay'd.
Henry Noel
(courtier to Queen Elizabeth 1)

Hello, I was unable to add to this episode, sadly, so in despair I’ll publish it as a mini-episode, like a tapas plate.

Gretel invites you to accompany her as she navigates the world a day at a time; the podcast is unscripted, it’s ad-free. It was started to help cope with the imminent death of her mother, and has continued after the grief sadly started in February of 2024. It was a path of solace and remains a path of solace, peace and kindness.
Gretel: ‘while looking outwards and finding the beauty in the world to observe and appreciate, it allows the loose ends within us to knit together. Wounds are soothed and - with an honest and open heart - shame, sorrow and despair can be lifted. There is a whole world out there, including our past, which is fascinating’.
Gretel loves the world and history, architecture, literature and people. And so is determined to walk this path with light footsteps and with humour and warmth: ‘Let’s gather up the beautiful things and ponder them in our hearts’.
