This episode is about people who say the darndest things to people who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
We live in a grief-averse society where big feelings and emotions are to be pushed away so we can move on with our lives.
Because of this, we are often ill-equipped to care for the bereaved and grieving.
The result?
Grievers end up on the receiving end of hurtful and awful “advice” or “support” from often well-meaning, grief-illiterate people. What some consider support, the grieving experience as painful words that slice our healing wounds wide open again.
In short, it causes unnecessary suffering to those of us already doing our best to survive the tragedy of loss.
I asked the @griefandlight Instagram community: “What have people told you after your loss that was unhelpful or painful?”
You may be shocked at the answers received.
Each one of their answers reveals some of the preconceived notions that non-grievers have about the grieving based on their particular loss, and this is what adds suffering to an already painful situation.
I also share a personal story of the day we met "John" at the funeral home where we held my brother's memorial, and the advice he shared as a grieving father himself.
Please note that it may be challenging to listen to this episode if you are in a tender stage of grief. Feel free to pause and return to it if/when you can.
Thank you for being here.

...It's the week after Easter Sunday and Sibling Grief Monday.
How's your grief hangover? I hope you're taking care of yourself.
In this episode, I share a physical grief-related experience that let me to understand one of the deepest truths about grief -- that grief is not this OR that; it's this AND that. I named this concept "felicitreza", or happy-sadness in English.
Grief is a million shades of grey, AND a magnificent colorwheel of emotions. That's why the experience can feel so complex and foreign to us in the beginning, and as it evolves with us through time.
I'll also discuss how finding your community in grief, or "grief tribe", can be key to your survival and even help you thrive in life after loss.
My hope is to make you feel less alone, and to be a beacon of light and source of information for anyone on this journey.
Thank you for being here.

...Welcome to my podcast launch!
This is a space created for you by someone who gets it – your grief; your foundation-shattering reality; and the question of what the heck do we do with all of these shattered pieces of life and loss around us.
It’s also for the listener who wants to better understand their loved one who is grieving, perhaps wants to learn how to help, or just wants to be more grief-literate.
In this episode, I'll share my personal story of the sudden loss of my younger brother, only sibling, a day after we celebrated his 32nd birthday. I'll also go into how that loss, trauma, and grief catapulted me into a truth-seeking journey, which ultimately led me to answer "the calling" of creating this space I now call Grief and Light.
My hope is to make you feel less alone, and to be a beacon of light and source of information for anyone embarking on this journey.
Thank you for being here.

Welcome to Grief and Light™, an award-winning, independent podcast exploring the…
Created and hosted by Nina Rodriguez, a grief-informed guide and bereaved sister, this space is for those navigating life-altering loss and for anyone who wants to better understand grief and show up for someone who's grieving.
•••
After the sudden death of my younger brother, Yosef, one day after we celebrated his 32nd birthday, I found myself searching for answers. I was surprised by how little we talk about grief publicly, how much we misunderstand it, and how few tools we're given to navigate it.
That search became Grief and Light™, launched on March 30, 2023, and grew into a mission to foster a more grief-informed, hopeful world.
Now in Season 5, with 130+ episodes, the podcast features honest conversations with first-hand experiencers, authors, researchers, creatives, and changemakers.
Together, we explore the many faces of grief, the secondary losses that often go unnamed, and what it means to keep living when life changes. Because grief isn't something to fix, rush through, or leave behind. It's something we can learn to understand, navigate, and make room for.
Here, grief and hope can coexist. So can heartbreak and joy. This isn't about finding a silver lining or turning pain into a lesson. It's about making space for the full human experience, on our own terms.
My hope is that these conversations offer a little more language for what you're experiencing, a little more understanding for the people around you, and a reminder that to grieve fully is to live fully.
