Meet Kenny Berk : 

In this episode I have the opportunity to interview a man who has been my colleague , one of my Mentors , and someone I regard has a friend.

Kenny’s experience with the Vidal Sassoon organization and the years that we shared at Redken , is the very reason I wanted him on the program.

My hopes are that you will find his story and hairdressing journey , interesting , informational , and inspiring .

Kenny Alan Berk conveys the art of cutting hair like fabric by combining strong technical knowledge with focus on balance, shape and overall suitability.

Following a 15-year tenure with the Vidal Sassoon organization, Kenny joined Redken 5th Avenue NYC which evolved into another 27 years. 

With over 46 years of experience, he has provided a variety of programs from in-salon workshop’s to multi-manufacturer trade shows throughout the United States , England, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Japan and Korea.

Independently, Kenny now focuses on facilitating fashion commercial Haircutting and Barbering  along with Principles of Consultation and Clientele building.

 His Hands-on Workshop’s, Demonstrations and Train the Trainer programs ensure that all salon professionals can experience the passion of the art and greater understanding of its principles.

It’s always a treat to share conversations with colleagues who have inspired me in the world of hair color. 

Today I get to share some time with Tom Dispenza , whom I have know for over 40 years. We have actually grown up in this business together.

I consider Tom to be one of my long time friends who has not only share social moments , but has also been a Mentor to me along the way. 

His experience in Hair Color dwarfs those who consider themselves “hair color experts”.

In this episode , we discuss some of challenges that Salon Professionals have when attempting to master hair color.

Tom also shares some information , strategies , and tips that will help you understand how hair color really works.

He is regarded as one of the leading Hair Colorists in the United States and his wealth of knowledge and experience with the chemistry of hair coloring and hair coloring techniques has earned him recognition on four continents as a true Master Colorist. 

He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show and Good Morning America and has written makeover and tip articles for most major magazines. He is also the author of four best-selling industry books, “296 Facts and Tips to Hair coloring”, “Coloring Hair”, “The Complexities of Coloring Hair” and "Becoming a Master Colorist".

Tom spent 18 years at Clairol, the last 5 of which were in Research and Development where he was part of the team that developed new hair color brands. He eventually became the Worldwide Senior Manager for Hair Color Education for the Clairol company and has been featured at the IBS (New York), Americas Beauty Show (Chicago), IBS (Long Beach) and The Premiere Beauty Show (Orlando).

The friends mother was mortified, and sobbed hysterically. Meanwhile, Yvette's mother did everything in her to hide a mothers pride, as she consoled the friends mother.

Yvette's career was launched that very moment and she's never looked back.

Currently, Yvette has a salon in one of Chicago's most vibrant neighborhoods, Lincoln park.

She has traveled throughout the United States and internationally sharing and teaching her passion for hair color.

With a highly diverse clientele she has become quite the expert on all hair types.

Originally , this term was used to refer to something from the past that would bring back memories of those time. However that reference has been skewed in the Hair Color business and now many times is used to discount , downplay , or diminish some of the procedures of the past.

The problem is that the one thing that has not changed at all is the very structure we work with everyday . The hair !

It’s still a physical , visual , and chemical structure comprised of :

Carbon , Oxygen , Hydrogen , Nitrogen , and Sulfur.

In this episode we will discuss some “social media” comments that attempt to diminish the filling or pre-pigmentizing procedure and dare to declare that filling un-even hair strands is unnecessary in todays world of hair color.

This , of course is nonsense !

Ask yourself , how many times have you had a color result develop unevenly or develop darker than you expected ?

I am sure you can agree that this procedure is , not only important , but essential to your hair color skills.

Living in the Moment !

Not an easy task for so many of us , right ?

Because we live in a society that demands , we reflect on the past and focus on the future , we sometimes forget to “live in the moment” and how beneficial that can be to our health (Physical & Mental ) , our relationships , and the rest of our life’s journey.
