We're quickly approaching the end of 2024, and what a time it's been. FREE OUR MAN.

On this episode, we're joined with Brooklyn-based cartoonist Gianna Meola. We talk about her work as an educator, her biggest influences, the development of your process as an artist, and her need to rewatch Sopranos from beginning to end.

LATE BUT NOT NEVER. We're joined with past guest Bianca Xunise and first-time guest Raeghan Buchanan in a two-for-one shop talk. Both have been actively touring to support their respective books: Bianca's Punk Rock Karaoke (Penguin) and Raeghan's 2nd edition printing of The Secret History of Black Punk (Silver Sprocket). We talk about their books, what it's been like on the road in Europe, the overlap of comics and punks, being black in predominately white spaces, and why southern food is better than the garbage served in the midwest.

Yeah we're a week late. We know. And we're sorry! Past Guysner winner Nate McDonough joins JB to talk about LONGBOXES, his recently self-published autobiographical book collecting all of his ongoing Longboxes stories originally published in his comic zine Grixly. We get into his lurid career as a comics flipper, the stories and characters of an unforgiving world that inform his comics, and the overlooked taxonomy of ponytail guys.

Cam is back?! And at what cost???? The boys announce a change to the pod, with Cam taking a break from the mainfeed until the end of the year. News and recents are also discussed, because we felt like it. Avi, owner of Silver Sprocket, returns to talk about their current fundraising campaign, as well as going in-depth about the current state of publishing, how it's effecting small press and Silver Sprocket, the shift in San Francisco's economic turmoil, and how the publisher is continuing to grow and adapt.

GOOD EVENING GUTTER GHOULS. So we're late. What's new? Cam is still on a break, but JB isn't alone left to ponder on what bumps in the night. Instead, he's visited by the spooky specter of Philly-based cartoonist Steve Thueson to welcome the first week of what is sure to be a monstrous month of October. Steve shares his process of making his newest book The Night Never Ends (Silver Sprocket Press), how he got into comics thru punk zines, his favorite horror movies, how his upbringing in the Mormon Church has effected his outlook on the world, and his transition into a stay-at-home wife guy.

The wrongs have been righted. A brand new episode on our off-week to make up for our mix-up from the last episode has arrived. We're closing out our three-part series as part of Chicago Zine Fest's official programming with Chicago-based cartoonist and CXC Emerging New Talent Award winner Kelly Wang to talk about her love for all things comics, her upbringing around manga a a child, her insane work ethic, why she sticks to working with ink on paper, and the lessons she's learned after graduating from SAIC to become a full-time cartoonist.

Man we're all over the place on this one. What was meant to be the final episode of our three-part series as part of Chicago Zine Fest's official online programming, ended up being egg on our face. Cam interviews Chicago(ish)-based cartoonist Johnny Sampson who is in fact NOT tabling (oops). Thankfully we've been meaning to talk with Johnny anyway, so we make due with our mistake. And don't sweat, we'll be posting the final CZF interview next week to make up for it. In the meantime, enjoy Cam's talk with Johnny as they discuss his career, how he got started at MAD Magazine, his path from fine art to illustration to eventually making comics, and why skateboarding is sick.

You can follow Johnny on Instagram @johnnysampson or check out his work on his website.

A week behind and no Cam. What could possible go wrong? Possibly*

As part of our ongoing series in conjunction with Chicago Zine Fest as part of their official online programming, we're joined with Chicago-based cartoonist Elias Gonzalez. Elias is a long-time listener and one of the organizers involved with CZF. We talk about his blossoming career making comics, how his work has developed pre and post-college, his experience as a zine fest enjoyer and now organizer, and what it means to be part of a comics community both online and offline.

REAL GAMERS RISE UP as we talk to Chicago-based cartoonist and illustrator Luke Schuler about his ongoing self-published webcomic-turned-real-comic Boss Nostalgic. We talk about the development of his comic, his love of video games, his work outside of comics, how he's navigated the professional commercial art world, and what informs his funny books. This interview is part of a four-episode series in conjunction with Chicago Zine Fest to promote the show and the exhibitors who will be tabling at this year's event.
