Nerd of Mouth

The big communal belly laughs we used to hear in theaters have now been traded for blood curdling screams as folks with comedy backgrounds like Curry Barker, Jordan Peele, and Zach Cregger bring the tension and release formula they perfected so well into a new genre with massive critical and financial results. Why is this happening and more importantly why is it such a natural transition and hey, is there any way at all that comedy movies themselves can make a comeback or are we just trading slapstick for movies where people get stabbed with sticks (and various other weapons).

John Stewart was created with the best of intentions by two white guys named Neal and Denn to add some actual color to the very white DC Comics of 971 and he came out swinging, with the character not shying away from his blackness. Then he sat on a shelf for a good while before he was used at all as the substitute in a Green Lantern book where the lead never actually left. Writers would put him through hell on a whim and when he finally did get a bit of salvation it was from a creator that rightfully deserves to be forgotten . And while he's often been used as a supporting character in comics (even taking a backseat to Guy Freaking Gardner of all people!!) it was folks from television that saw his potential and would make a truly lasting impression with the character, first in Justice League in 2001 and now in the modern hit Lanterns that is redefining the character and proving he always deserved the moment he's getting now.

Jake takes the boys through a brutal tour of Wolverine's solo video game past and play through some real Weapon Excrement as they discuss games so bad you'd need a healing factor to survive them. Is it really that hard to create a good game for our lovable and murderous canucklehead? Have they ever gotten it right? And did Sony even get it right this time with their new triple A game or will Wolverine succumb to his greatest threat yet: Video game journalists. The bulk of this episode was recorded before the new game came out but we reunited like a fifty-something Hugh Jackman to share our thoughts once we played the game (since everyone has them and we also shamelessly content farm.)

It's been more than a decade since Disney took over the world's favorite space opera. Having already cast our gaze at the PREQUEL trilogies Holden and Jake have decided to force themselves to watch the highs, lows, and frustratingly debatable middles of a movie series that made people yearn for the days of pod racing. Were longtime fans betrayed? Do we owe George Lucas an apology? Can anybody agree about anything involving "The Last Jedi"? Find out, dear listener, and get weirdly emotionally invested along the way!

The tragedy that was 9/11 changed everything so much that it’s hard to remember what things were like right before. Thankfully Jake is here to remind us of the movies, music, tv, and games that were huge the week before and how it seems like we could never go back to that specific time when Crazytown and American Pie 2 were all the rage. We’ll never forget 9/11 but we’ve certainly forgotten some of the things that immediately became anachronistic and just how things changed right after.

Joss Whedon was a nerd God with quirky quips, inspiring world building, and positive portrayals of female characters. But unfortunately that’s just half the story: An icon on the streets, a Dr. Horrible in the sheets. Recurring issues of abuse and control on set and off popped up and it all culminated with a downfall that in hindsight feels expected and karmic. Buffy fan and Page 7 cohost Jackie Zebrowski joins us to go through all of it and analyze a creator who will be outlived by both his creations and actions.

Summer is almost over which used to be mean 2 things: The start of school and a new season of Saturday morning cartoons. But hey, they were not all created equally. Some certainly had higher budgets than others, some stood the test of time and others starred Louie Anderson as a kid version of himself and his abusive dad. We rank a bunch of classic Saturday morning cartoons and learn a lot about each other in the process. You'll have to listen to see who liked the Beetlejuice cartoon, who defends Reboot to the grave, and who wishes they could go back in time and kill all the muppet babies.

From a gun toting glint in Ian Fleming's eye to a global box office sensation James Bond has been drinking vodka martinis and making bad puns for over 70 years. Mike is the M of the episode, explaining the origins of Bond, highlighting some of his best cinematic adventures throughout the decades and talks about the small family with the funny name that shepherded the whole franchise. You can expect us to talk, please don't expect us to die.

Crack open a bottle (over a dumb thugs head) and get yourself a whole steaming chicken from a barrel cause we're talking Beat 'em Up video games. There's just something special about stopping crime by walking around streets, beaches, and elevators punching and kicking the same few foes over and over again before running up against a much bigger foe that tries your patience and steals your quarters. This is a fun episode full of history and jokes, perfect to listen to while fending off some ladies with big whips.

Jake leads us through a tribute to physical media! Memories of VHS horror box art! The heyday and resurgence of vinyl! The reliance (and obligation) of giving books as gifts! We cover it all and also share some stories from our listeners about the tangible, physical stuff that made them who they are. If you're old you can remember how it was with us and if you're young you can hear about the pure joy of going over to a friend's house and seeing that they also had a DVD copy of Stargate!
