Trout Stalker Series Part 1

It is one of the most iconic waters of modern American Fly Fishing history. The Letort is the American chalk stream/ limestone spring creek equivalent to the River’s Test and Itchen in England. In the Cumberland Valley it was Marinaro, Fox, Shenk, Koch and so many other Letort Regulars that created a legacy of terrestrials, dry fly matching the hatch , minutiae, stream conservation work - the innovations are endless. Most importantly it’s about a wild Loch Leven strain brown that has endured one chemical spill after another for decades. The lady flows through a growing urban sprawl, strip malls and housing projects, gets her ground water sucked out of it, and yet it’s very resilient and migratory browns have developed a life survival strategy to combat all the hardships thrown at it including climate change.

I have  guided and fished Great Lakes summer steelhead now for almost 36 years. Between my brief hotel career stints on the West Coast and Indiana, I have written and explored more about our Great Lakes Summer Skamania steelhead than perhaps no one else. Looking for answers and the history of Washington State’s iconic Washougal River’s Skamania strain fish’s introduction into Lake Michigan by Indiana, brought me to one of the finest books ever written on those fish: Dry Line Steelhead by Bill McMillan. Join me and my guest John: Bill’s  son, as we discuss John’s epic steelhead conservation work and fighting for the plight of the most beautiful migratory salmonid fish that swims- Washington State’s Washougal steelhead. John is President of the West Coast based Conservation Angler group. We discuss his dad and the fishing legacy of dry line steelheading today- don’t miss this one!

Norway - the Land of the Midnight Sun,  has a breathtaking and unparalleled Nordic magnetism- a raw beauty that no other country on the planet can boast. Its unbelievably stunning  fjords, and soaring and austere snow capped mountains,  garnish some of the most majestic rivers on earth.These harbor some of the planet’s incredibly large Atlantic salmon to be found- up to 90 pounds have been recorded, along with sea trout,  brown trout and mayfly/ stonefly hatches once in the greatest  quantities imaginable. But it is in these rivers- the playground of all of Europe, that our beloved salmon could have been loved to death.From the thousands of salmon fish farms feeding the insatiable appetite of the world for Omega -3 ‘s and the health benefits of salmon, have come the spread of  disease, and pollution of wild  genetics by escaped salmon breeding with wild ones , Add the decades of killing of big brood stock salmon by anglers,  and climate change’s ugly head, could  our magnificent salmon of the Viking gods met their tragedy- or Viking Ragnarök? With the river closures implemented this summer, more is needed to protect these magnificent beasts from decimation. We raise a skål to you in helping us educate and love these truly magnificent creatures.
