"I did not know who to talk to. I was scared of being judged, scared of being a distraction to my teammates and coaches and scared of looking weak as hockey guys are 'tough'."

All that fear led to 10 years of drugs and alcohol dependancy.

"I also talk about life after hockey. Now what?"

"My drinking and my behavior while drinking was costing me jobs and relationships."

Ed came up in the public housing projects of Pittsburgh, PA. He was raised by a single mom.

"I fought a lot, suffered physical abuse, observed a lot of violence, and even saw someone get killed once."

After a long struggle with drinking, Ed realized he needed to stop focusing on short-term fixes, and start committing to long-term plans.

December 23, 2013 was the day he made the decision to stop limiting himself with alcohol,

and with a pile of work, the doors blew open.

“A limitation is only as powerful as the

energy you give to it. Your dreams also follow this same law.”

"In the last year alone, there has been a record of overdose fatalities and a rise in substance use, especially for women. Tragically, many are living in the darkness of shame often created by the consequences of addiction like sexual violence and even death."

Caroline is a Social Worker, Author, and recovery advocate. Amongst many other things, including founder and visionary of the annual international Women's Day Global Recovery Event presented by the SHE RECOVERS Foundation.
