A long long time ago, Episode 1 was made. Get to know Jon, a former correctional officer and sergeant at the state's big house, and Jake, a current sergeant at a jail in the southwest. They tell you how they came and stay and went (in Jon's case), and you get to hear Jon's "Most Prison Story Ever."

Idaho tried and failed to execute inmate Thomas Creech last month, who has been on death row since 1981.

Creech admitted to killing a bunch of people in the 1970s, but convicted of two for sure. Supreme Court decision in 1976 put a temporary stop on executions and so Creech got a new chance at life, which he threw away by killing another inmate inside the prison.

Now, we can't get an IV going in him and he lives another day. Well, what do we do now? Deliver the justice he was promised in the Reagan era or throw in the towel?

Oklahoma County Jail became every officer's nightmare.

Officer Daniel Misquez was doing his job when an inmate, held on rape charges, took his keys radio and cell phone and held a knife to his neck. They stabbed him, kicked, and humiliated our comrade-in-arms for over an hour. The incident was livestreamed on Facebook, giving you the pubic a real look at the animal inmates the media and politicians love to coddle.

Choosing violence, the inmate signed his own death warrant which was served at gunpoint from a heroic OKC police officer for all the inmates to see. Officer Misquez made it out under his own power, but the media and prison leadership are wrong when they described him as "okay."

Kidnapping, rioting, murder charges. All to keep these men in prison, their personal playground, even longer. Sick and tired of the indifference to our officers, Jon takes off in righteous anger again.

Brooks got out but couldn't stand it. Jon tells the story of a guy who didn't want to go to general population, so he threatened Jon's life. But Jon didn't fall for it! Jake also sees repeat offenders finding the stability of a home environment when they return to jail. Jake also tells the story of a time he beat a man for helping him with his taxes. Jon doesn't get it.

The job is polticial whether you like it or not. Robert Gonzalez, NYC's Correction Department training chief resigned because he refused to rescind transfer orders for COs who were breaking policy and not doing their jobs. His boss Lynelle Maginley-Liddie got a call from city hall. Gonzalez refused to bow to political pressure leveraged upon him by his subordinates. But how does that even happen? The entire training division suffers thanks to these four shitty officers.

The story is important because this show is about survival-- not just from assaults, policies, PTSD-- but also ethics. What kind of officer will you be? The kind that looks the other way? Or the kind that sticks your neck out for what is right? It's hardly ever a happy ending in government.

Jon and Jake also have a weird conversation about jackets and boots for some reason, but it's been moved to the end so we won't be mad if you bail early.

Last Friday was rough. CDCR admin was really taken to task for their California model. CDCR does have some really praiseworthy OFFICERS though, and in this episode Jon and Jake highlight the heroic actions of Officer Rogelio Tienda, who works at Corcoran, who saved the life of another officers and apprehended the suspect who left him for dead-- all this out in the community. Another story to lift you up this week are the heroic actions of Oficers Scott Holbrook and Angela Bzdak of Lorain County, who were able to use CPR to save the life of their K-9 compadre when the chips were down.

It's been heavy lately so take a breather, kick back with Jake and Jon, talk some whiskey and westerns and enjoy life. There's good things to think about.

It started out so well: Jon and Jake's spirits are high while they talk favorite bourbons and scotch, but then are soon sobered to hear the story of a female correctional in Los Angeles who was taken hostage on her post and raped for hours by a vicious inmate. The result of expanded freedoms and fewer consequences in "The California Model," being adopted across the country. Officers are not safe.

Evil is never hypocritical. It acts in accordance with its nature without reprieve and without stopping to count the cost to itself. For good men, hypocrisy abounds: good men constantly count the costs to themselves and shy away from confronting acts of sufficient horror. Irresolute, good men seek compromise with evil to achieve a mere order that abandons righteousness. In so doing, good men are complicit with evil. They enable and embolden and empower evil. But is this just mere philosophy? Ask the raped officer, left destroyed and humiliated and abandoned by her leadership of good men.
