Heaving Bosoms

Oh hey pals! Sally Thorne joined Erin and Mel to recap the 90's masterpiece Untamed Heart. Marisa Tomei does a masterclass in turning an odd-ball role with questionable script choices into a stunning performance. And Christian Slater is very believable as a boy raised by a Baboon King (or ferrets).

CW: We discuss an attempted sexual assault that happens in the movie as well as the survivor's coping mechanisms afterward.

Bonus Content: Sally's next release Angelica Frankenstein Makes Her Match (out Sept 22, 2022), imprinting on movies, how is Marisa Tomei so perfect?, the revelation that is Rosie Perez and her dancing, So. Much. Smoking., underground lairs, magic vinyl records, and so much more!

Hey HBs! Naima Simone is here! She and Mel gush about the most perfect movie in the whole world: Beyond the Lights! Between Gugu Mbatha-Raw (who sang the whole thing!), Minnie Driver, and Danny Glover, we were bowled over. Plus, parenting in pandemictimes, cackling until your stomach hurts, and rewatching movies for science.

CW: discussions of sexual assault that happen on screen

Lady Loves:

Mel AND Naima: This movie's soundtrack!!

Follow Naima: @naimasimoneauthor on all the things.

POST-EPISODE EDIT: A listener clued us in on some disturbing information regarding Nate Parker and Machine Gun Kelly that Mel and Naima didn't know about before this recording.

CW: rape, racism.

Nate Parker was charged for and subsequently acquitted of raping a fellow college student in 1999. His alleged co-offender was convicted of rape and later that conviction was overturned.

Machine Gun Kelly has a history of fetishizing Black women and making sexual comments about underaged girls.

These disappointing and disgusting facts would have definitely changed the tenor of our analysis had we known before.

Hey HBs! We're here with part 1 of Bully by Penelope Douglas. It's a new adult romance between middle-aged-sounding high schoolers who used to be best friends until he turned into a super villain and started bullying her. Listen, a lot of it didn't work for us, but the sexy times did. It was also an incredible vehicle for raceway noises, learning about arborists, and Melody climbing so high on an anti slut-shaming soap box that I doubt we'll ever see her again. If you want part 2, check out episode 88!

More Bonus Content:

Erin's got attitude, Mel's got disclaimers, Cult housekeeping, book recs are NEVER a reflection on the person who recommended them, name opinions, Melody cannot let go of all the girl-on-girl crime, *Bing Boong Bong Bird Click* What Are Arborists? with Erin, vrooom vrooom beep beep!

Self-Love Recommendations:

Melody: Please, please, PLEASE donate to The Yellowhammer Fund to help our sisters in Alabama and The National Network of Abortion Funds to help our sisters all over the nation access basic medical care and take charge of their reproductive futures.

Erin: ... Yasso Greek Yogurt Ice Cream Bars are super good!

Hey HBs! Come enjoy part 1 of REBEL by Beverly Jenkins! We've got a teacher who's calling in life is to help as newly-free people learn to read and write as possible and the dashing Captain who just wants to support her dreams and love her forever and maybe do sex in a tree house that he built with is own two hands! This America Times book is as densely-packed with wisdom as it is with sizzling banter and inspiring content. To hear Part 2, check out episode 129!

Bonus Content: 50 points to Slytherin after Melody sings AGAIN, Melody is a MILF with an equally sexy new ride, Erin and Melody learn a ton more about Reconstruction (which is firmly in America Times), "your thing or my thing?", lobster bisque fiascos, and so much more!

Lady Loves: Social Distancing! Let's all to it (not) together! Seriously, stay in your house, wash your hands for 20 seconds VERY frequently, wipe all smooth surfaces down with disinfecting solution regularly, and consolidate grocery shopping as much as possible. Also, shop for the elderly! If you're older, let people shop for you! Have you ever wanted to do a Love Actually with the signs? Erin thinks that's how you should ask your elderly neighbor if they need groceries. It's firmly her idea and no one else's. But most of all, unless it's crucial, STAY IN YOUR HOUSE.

Hey y'all! It's time for an encore episode: Roller Girl by Vanessa North! We will be back next week with our annual Reading Embrace episode, but we think the best way to start 2022 is with this feel-good lesbian romance between a trans athlete and a plumber/roller derby coach. It's exactly what we need! Roller derby, tons of enthusiastic consent, low-stakes conflict, a whole gaggle of awesome side characters, the importance of lady friendship! This novella was a big yum, a big swoon, and a big heart soar!

Bonus Content: Erin knows so much about roller derby and Melody actually sobs with joy near the end.

Lady Loves:

Erin: Ann Aguirre is writing a HELIX ROMANCE called LOVE CODE and you can read it if you sign up for her newsletter! Helix romance! AI romance! Alien sex with head tentacles!

Melody: THE OLD GUARD. Is a beautiful Netflix action movie with Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne, plus a whole bunch of other super talented actors. Found family, incredible fight scenes, and the most beautiful romance subplot I've EVER SEEN. There is this declaration of love between Joe and Nicky that is so pure and deep and heartfelt that it knocked my socks off! Also the HIGHER LEARNING PODCAST with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay. Every episode is pure gold. They use current events as a vehicle to talk about bigger subjects regarding race and Black culture. Subscribe now.

Hey HBs! This week we're throwing out the script and subbing in The Hating Game movie! Life made reading hard recently, so we decided to treat ourselves to a visual delight! We loved this adaptation of Sally Thorne's debut masterpiece! If you want to hear what we thought of the book way back when, check out episodes 30 and 31.

Bonus Content: Erin's childhood bedroom, the euphemisms one must come up with when podcasting within earshot of one's parents, Melody falling over herself about paintball again, a "tactical non-turtle" that was NOT too tight, and Erin realizing how charming Lucy's Smurf obsession actually is right in front of us!

Emily P, you are a distant relative of Mrs. Claus. You’re a cheerful and kind multitasker who doesn’t need public accolades or glory, but does it all for the good of the world. You can also bake a mean cookie and, if called upon, manage and care for every elf on the North Pole. But seriously, it’s 2021, step out from the shadow of Santa and make the world bow down at your extremely accomplished and humble feet.
