Today’s episode is a tender and meaningful one. We’re joined by Julie Dominguez, a woman whose story carries both deep sorrow and quiet strength. Julie opens her heart to share about the loss of her teenage daughter, Meagan, and what she has learned through the long journey of grief.

I just want to say before we start how much I admire Julie’s willingness to be so open about something so painful. Grief is such a personal thing, and yet she has been willing to let others into that journey. Through her story, you really see who God has been to her in those darkest moments, and also how the people around her helped walk alongside her through that pain.

One thing that stood out to me so much in talking with Julie is just her huge mom heart. Her love for Meagan is so evident. It’s been many years since Meagan went to heaven, but you can tell it still feels so fresh to Julie. That kind of loss is not something you ever truly get over, it just still really hurts.

One of the sweetest parts of this episode is the connection to someone many of you may remember. Ashley is the granddaughter of Frieda Cowling, who we had the honor of interviewing back in episode 63. If you haven’t listened to that one yet, I would really encourage you to go back and hear it. To hear how Friedas granddaughter has grown up to trust God, standing firm in her faith through her own trials, is a beautiful testimony to a lasting spiritual legacy.

I’ve been so encouraged by Ashley. She has such a grateful heart and such a sweet, gentle spirit. It’s so evident that she has taken hold of that baton of faith and is running her race with purpose.

This season, Beauty for Ashes, has been about remembering that God doesn’t waste anything. He meets us right in the middle of our brokenness and if we let Him, He slowly, faithfully brings something good out of it.

Today’s episode is with my sweet friend, Katy Moffitt, and I’m just really excited for you to hear from her. Katy shares her story of coming out of some really dark, heavy and painful places and being brought into God’s marvelous light through salvation.

One of the things I admire most about Katy is her humility. She’s so willing to own her own struggles and be real about her journey, and it makes what she shares feel really practical and helpful. She’s also just really easy to listen to. There’s a sweetness about her that I think you’ll pick up on right away.

Katy is a quality lady, and I know this conversation is going to encourage you, no matter what season you’re in.

Several times in this episode we talk about the idea of putting God on trial.

When we go through struggles, one of our first reactions as humans is to ask “why.” We look for someone or something to blame, and often, we feel anger. I’ll be the first to admit—I’ve been there. I’ve felt those same emotions and taken those same actions.

But I can also tell you this: the moment I began to accept God’s sovereignty, and to see my struggles as part of His perfect will, something started to change. That’s when I began to heal. That’s when I was able to move forward.

The beauty, though, doesn’t come right away. It comes when we take ownership of our part in the struggle.

If our hardship is the result of sin, then we have to be willing to confess, repent, and do the work to make things right.

And if our struggle is something beyond us, something allowed by God, then we’re called to trust. To believe that His ways are better than our ways.

That’s not easy. Believe me, I know.

But when we get to that place, that’s when beauty begins to rise from the ashes.

This episode feels really special to me because I get to share a conversation with someone who’s not just a guest but a friend of mine from back in my college days, Esther Wruck.

Esther is just one of those people who is so easy to listen to. She’s gentle, she’s honest, and the way she talks about hard things is just really practical and helpful. I’ve learned a lot from her just by being her friend.

In this episode, she opens up about what it was like to find out her daughter has Down syndrome and the unexpected beauty that’s come through it. She also shares about her experience with hormonal depression, something I think so many people can relate to, even if it’s not often talked about out loud.

Something I really admire about Esther is the way she was raised, you can just hear it in who she is. I also love how much she loves her church and how her faith really shows up in the way she lives her life and walks through both the good and the hard.

She’s just a really sweet friend, and I’m so grateful she said yes to having this conversation.

As you know, this season is called “Beauty for Ashes,” and throughout this season we’re talking with people who have walked through real pain and real loss, but who have also experienced how joy can somehow grow in the middle of it.

Our guest today is Darla Hillman. Darla and her family went through something that so many people around the world faced during the pandemic. Within a short time, she lost both of her parents to COVID. That kind of loss changes a family. It leaves a lot of grief, a lot of questions, and a lot to carry.

But one of the things that struck me when talking with Darla is that even after everything she and her family have endured, there’s still this genuine hope and joy when she speaks. Not a forced kind of positivity but a deep, steady faith that’s both comforting and honestly convicting in the best way.

This season is so meaningful because we’re leaning into real life stories, the kind that hold both heartbreak and hope at the same time. The kind that remind us God doesn’t waste our pain.

Today’s conversation is a really special one. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing youto Kelly Gray. Kelly is a pastor’s wife, a mom and a proud grandmother. She’s a woman who has poured her life into her family and into ministry by loving people, serving faithfully, and walking alongside others in their own seasons of joy and sorrow.

Kelly is also a special needs mama. Her son’s life was a gift. While his journey here on earth was not without challenges, it was filled with love, purpose, and a depth that changed her heart.

And yet what strikes me most about Kelly is this steady, grounded joy she carries. Not because life has been easy, it hasn’t, but because she has clung to the Lord through every high and every valley. Through ministry. Through motherhood. Through grief.

Her story is honest. It’s tender. It’s about the complexity of serving while carrying private pain. It’s about loving a child with special needs with your whole heart. And it’s about learning that even in the deepest ashes, God is still writing beauty.

When I think of Mrs. Cowling, the first word that comes to mind is character. She is a woman of integrity, persistence, and steady faith. There is something so beautiful about the way she carries herself. It is authentic, it is grounded, and it is rooted in a real relationship with the Lord.

One of the things I gleaned from this episode was how the respect for her earthly father so naturally translated into a deep love for her Heavenly Father. You will hear it. Her faith is not forced. It is not performative. It is personal. It is relational. And it is real.

She and her husband are truly two of the strongest Christians and most faithful soul winners I know. They genuinely care about people, not just about church attendance or appearances, but about their souls.

They were incredibly influential in both my husband’s life and mine. The example they set, the prayers they prayed, and the encouragement they gave all mattered more than they probably even realize. We have the utmost respect for them, not just because of what they do, but because of who they are.

Today’s episode is one that I think is going to stay with you. Our guest is Virginia Harris, and I wish you all will someday have the opportunity to see her smiling face. If you know her, you already know she has this joy about her that just draws you in. She’s the kind of person who feels like an instant friend. Easy to talk to, easy to listen to. And she just radiates the love of God.

But her testimony is not one that does not include deep pain. Virginia is going to share about a car accident that changed her life forever. In a single moment, everything shifted. And what followed wasn’t a quick fix or an immediate “I see the purpose in this.” It was a long road physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

One of the things I admire most about her is her honesty. She’s not going to tie this up in a neat little bow. She’s going to talk about the pain. The wrestling. The time it took before she could truly thank God for what she went through.

Because gratitude doesn’t always come overnight.
Healing doesn’t always happen quickly.
And, sometimes faith looks like just holding on.

But here’s what I love about Virginia, suffering didn’t steal her joy. If anything, it deepened it. Refined it. There’s a steadiness in her now, a sweetness, that you can only get by walking through fire with the Lord.

Today is the day! The premier of our brand-new season called “Beauty for Ashes.” This season has been on my heart for a while. We’re going to be talking about redemption, not the pretty, polished version, but the real kind. The kind that comes after heartbreak. After disappointment. After pain. The kind where God meets us in the ashes and slowly, faithfully makes something beautiful.

And I truly can’t think of a better way to start than with my friend, Kayte McCoy.

This conversation is a personal one. Kayte shares her story with so much courage and wisdom. She talks about real hurt, deep hurt, and what it looked like to actually address it instead of avoid it. I was so struck by her wisdom. The way she wrestled through her pain. The way she clung to truth. The way she allowed God to meet her in some really serious, difficult places and lead her toward healing.

I do want to gently mention that we touch on some adult topics in this episode, so if you’ve got little ones nearby, now might be a good time to pop in some earbuds.

Hey friends, welcome back to the Help My Abide podcast. I can’t believe it, but this is the final episode in Season 5: Back on the Field. What a season it’s been. Today, we’re closing out this season with a really special conversation. I had the joy of interviewing Meagan Sullivan. Meagan and her husband, Josh, along with their children, have been serving as missionaries in South Africa for the past seven years. Before heading out on furlough, their church had grown to around eighty members, and they have three young men currently training for ministry. The Sullivans have four biological kids, and two more who are theirs in their hearts.

In this interview, Meagan opens up about life on the mission field: about faith, about endurance, and about what it looks like to trust God in the middle of heartbreak and uncertainty. Their story is one of deep grief, but also incredible hope. Some of you may have already heard about what happened earlier this year when Meagan’s husband, Josh, was kidnapped in South Africa and then miraculously rescued. It’s a powerful story of God’s protection and presence, and I really encourage you to read the article about it. You can find the link in the show notes. I loved this interview with Meagan. She’s someone who has been acquainted with grief, yet she continues to press on learning more about herself, her weakness, and her faith in her loving Heavenly Father. She’s so real, and honestly, she felt like an instant friend.
