  • Joy in Jesus - 10.20.19 Sermon

In this sermon, Pastor Dave speaks to having joy in Jesus. He speaks to maturing in Christ by learning to rejoice, rejecting dead religion and renouncing our personal resumes. How do you mature?

    Questions to Consider

    1. (v. 3:1) Why does Paul have to remind us to rejoice? What are some of the things that regularly steal your joy?  What would it look like for you to repent and ask Jesus to be your joy?
    2. (v. 3:2-3) Paul encourages us to reject dead religion. Where have you lived with binoculars, examining other people’s lives instead of a mirror examining your own?  Where does dead religion show up most in your life?  What would it look like to repent and thank Jesus for His righteousness instead of busting people up to make yourself feel better?
    3. (v. 3:4-7) Paul renounces his resume in favor of Christ Jesus. What things are on your resume that you are proud of and point to in order to justify yourself?  What would it look like to repent?

  • Joy in Service - 10.13.19 Sermon

In this sermon, Pastor Dave Tooker speaking to having joy in service. Can you see how God defines greatness through Paul, Timothy and Epaphroditus? Let us be usual, common, mundane people who are willing to be poured out so that others can be filled up and sent out so that others can be brought in.

    Questions to Consider

    1. How do you define greatness in a person? How did Jesus define greatness? (Mark 10:43-45)
    2. (v. 2:17-18) Paul was ‘poured out’ so that others would be filled up. Where do you resist being poured out for the benefit of others? What is one way you can repent and be poured out today?
    3. (v. 2:19-23) Timothy was ‘sent out’ so that others would be brought in. The mission of the Church has always been to “Go, make disciples!’ What are some ways that comfort and complacency have kept you from seeing your neighborhood and workplace as a mission field? What is one step you can take toward repentance and reengagement?
    4. (v. 2:25-30) Epaphroditus was ‘wrung out’ so that others might be helped up. How has the desire for the sensational, dramatic and extraordinary distracted you from the beauty of seeing Jesus work in the normal, ordinary, mundane things of life? How have others been impactful in your discipleship and pursuit of Jesus? Where can you enter into other’s lives to make much of Jesus?

    3. Humility doesn’t keep score. What are some ways we keep score in our relationships? What does repentance and removing the scoreboard look like?
    4. (v. 2:12-13) The life of the Christian is one of continued repentance and growth. What has your journey of working out your salvation looked like?

    2. (v. 1:22-26) Do you do what you want to do or what’s best for others? How has this caused conflict in your marriage and other relationships? What does James 4 say about these competing desires? What would repentance look like for you?
    3. (v. 1:27) Christianity isn’t a solo sport! It is about us being one team. What are some of your opinions and preferences that you hold onto that bring division and discord? What would it look like to lay those down and see Jesus as better than your preferences?
