In 1995 Maurizio Gucci, the head of the Gucci fashion empire was murdered as he arrived at his office in a trendy Milan neighborhood.  It was one of the most shocking scandals in Italy of the time: a glamorous socialite, well-known for the tabloid headlines about her super-rich exploits, Patrizia Reggiani, had been accused and later found guilty of ordering the assassination of her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci. In this special Serial Talker podcast we are going to take a detailed look into the horrific tragedy that played out at the Munich Olympics in 1972.  One week into the XX Olympiad on the morning of September 5th, Palestinian militants known as Black September, took 11 Israeli athletes and staff hostage. For 20 hours high drama played out live on television, broadcast around the world - precipitated by a horrendously bungled police shootout.

This episode of the podcast is especially poignant as I read a tribute to the 11 Israelis murdered at the 1972 Olympic Games at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics  Opening Ceremony just a few days ago. This was a historic moment in that it was the first time this atrocity had been recognized at the Olympic Games since it happened nearly 50 years ago. ★

What was one of the greatest jewel heists in history? That would be the one pulled off by a trio of charming young surfer dudes from Miami back in 1964! In 1993, a Roman Catholic priest, an Irish Republican Army militant and a retired Rochester police officer were arrested in the robbery of $7.4 million from an armored car service in Rochester, NY.  It was one of the biggest and arguably the most infamous Brinks robberies in US history.
