Horrifying History

Sometimes a person can have something that will come into their lives, and it changes everything. In March of 1974, for the Betz family of Fort George Island, Florida in the United States - this change came in the form of a sphere.

There is one horror movie plot line that can be terrifying…dolls. From Chucky in the movie Child’s Play to Annabelle in The Conjuring series, the concept of evil dolls brings tones of money into the box office. From their glassy eyes, and carved smiles; these death dolls make people nervous even before they come to life and hunt down their living prey.

But as we all know, not all dolls are evil. In fact, dolls have been part of human play for thousands of years - but historically there are some dolls that were not for play.

We are getting closer to Halloween, which is my favourite holiday of the year! Why? Well, it is the only time of the year that it is ok to eat boxes of tiny candy bars. There is no stress like on Christmas or Valentine’s day, and the best thing is you can dress however you wish and likely not get arrested.

Just like we did last year; Horrifying History wants to give all of you a gift this Halloween, and what better gift is there than an additional episode! This year we are collaborating with Beyond the Rainbow podcast to tell you about some horrifying crimes that occurred on Halloween.

For many, forests are a place to commune with nature. But thanks to movies like the Blair Witch Project; a dark and dense forest can fill many people with dread. In ancient times, people started building bridges to gain passage over various obstacles, like valleys or bodies of water. From that point on; the knowledge on how to build bridges started spreading from area to area, but so did the lore about the monsters and ghosts that made these places their own.

Just a heads up here my dear listeners: in this episode we will be talking about racism, suicide, harm to animals, and murder. Listener discretion is advised.

Many people love playing video games. It is a way for people to escape from their regular lives, and allows a diversity of choice that the real world can’t provide. According to multiple studies, gaming can boost a persons mood, and help relieve stress. They also can be used as a learning tool, and this is why video games have been used in therapy for at least a decade.

But imagine for a moment that there is a game that was used for a different purpose. Imagine that there is a game that was created as part of a psychology experiment to produce psychoactive effects, and eventually result in controlling the mind of the person who plays it.

Imagine for a moment that you are listening to the radio. The station you chose originally isn’t interesting you at the moment, so you start searching for another to listen to. This is when you hear it…a sequence of musical notes. Then a voice comes on. The voice has been altered so you can’t tell if it is a male, female, or a child. They start reading a series of what seems to be random numbers over and over again.

There is one place in northeastern Utah in the United States that is known world wide for its connection to the paranormal. This 512 acre or 207.2 hectare ranch that is said to be a hotspot for everything spooky like poltergeist phenomena, crop circles, UFO sightings, strange electromagnetic forces, floating fireballs, and cattle mutilations.

Now if that doesn’t scare you, there is more. Local lore tells that the area where this ranch sits is cursed by an ancient spell that summons terrifying shapeshifters that are called Skinwalkers.

Over fifty years ago, a woman’s burned body was discovered in Norway. Today, we still have no idea who she was, or why her life ended there. Some think she was a spy, or part of an international criminal organization. Others think that perhaps she ended her own life after a battle with mental illness. Even recent DNA testing gives no clues of who this woman actually was.

Just a heads up here my dear listeners, today we will be talking about death, suicide, and graphic crime scenes. Listener discretion is advised.

Beauty pageants have traditionally been contests that focus on ranking people by their physical attributes. In current times, pageants have evolved to include inner beauty, talent, and intelligence, but the reason that people enter these contests haven’t really changed. Some enter to build confidence, while some use it as a way to meet new people. More often, winning pageants gives the contestant opportunities in the worlds of modelling and entertainment. And then, there are all the cash prizes and possible scholarships that one can win…this makes entering pageants enticing to many.

But most may not realize that there is a dark side behind these contests. For some, beauty pageants can trigger eating disorders, lower self esteem, and cause depression. But for others, being centre stage gets them noticed in ways that no one would ever want.
