Heath connects with the founder and CEO of Hunt Lift Eat Luke Cox. Luke is from Grayson Co just a couple of counties over from where Heath grew up. Luke now resides in Colorado. In this the first of the 2024 Autumn Oaks recordings, Steve is joined by Texan Sid Underwood and by Land of Lincoln coon hunter Doug Crawley.  The conversations were recorded live in media center of the Kuhlman Center, headquarters for the Event Where History Is Made.

Underwood had the distinction of being the last Bench Show Judge to judge Autumn Oaks in its entirety as a single judge.  The event now employs two judges and as many rings in the three-day event.   The old friends discuss many aspects of Autumn Oaks, of coon hunting in the State of Texas and their association as co-employees of the Field Operations Department of UKC when Steve was there.

Crawley set a milestone in the UKC World Coonhound Championship that can never be replicated.  His Treeing Walker Coonhound Crawley’s Louise became the first-ever female hound to win the UKC World Nite Hunt Championship.  Louise accomplished the feat in 1989, thirty-five years ago.  Steve and Doug take a nostalgic trip back to Montgomery City, Missouri, then headquarters of John and Linda Wick’s Wick Outdoor Works supply business, including accounts of the hunt that took place in the midst of a hurricane.

Glen Young is 89 years old.  He has hunted with James Merchant, Joe House, John Monroe, Frank Giddings, Harold Trusty, Buddy Gilbert, Tam Young, and the list goes on, of famous hunters past and present.  Glen is nothing if not frank in the accounts of hunters and hunts and is a no-nonsense storyteller that calls them as he sees them.

Steve recently spent an hour with Glen, with the promise of much more to come, to discuss his upbringing in rural Arkansas, his hunts with Deep River Mike, Merchant’s Banjo II (whom he remembers as the best competition dog of his experience) and a long list of hounds coonhound historians will recall.   Despite his age, his mind is still as sharp as an Old Timer coon skinner and his vast knowledge of the coon hunting game will inform and entertain lovers of the tree dog as no other.   You truly won't want to miss this one!

Jamie Estep is the busiest man in the coon hunting game.  He's a sharp guy with boundless energy and a winsome personality.    Not only is he a Field Representative for United Kennel Club, he serves as an official interpreter of UKC rules, anchors the annual YouTube broadcast of the UKC Tournament of Champions, is President of the West Virginia State Coon Hunter’s Association, the president of his local coon club, the principal of a Christian school and serves as a full-time pastor of his local church.  Recently Estep was the overseer of a very successful West Virginia Championship which he and Steve discuss at length in this episode.

Being from the State of West Virginia, Jamie and Steve have a lot of common memories of hunts and hunters of the Mountain State.  This one presents Dog Talk At Its Finest, Appalachian style  It's a good one.

With UKC’s giant Autumn Oaks coonhound extravaganza happening this month, Steve calls longtime friend Lee Currens of Piedmont, South Carolina to discuss their plans for the big event.

The conversation moves to the topic of the Autumn Oaks shows.  Currens is an octogenarian that was a hard hunter but remains very active by showing his Treeing Walkers in major competition.

We talk about the judges UKC has selected for “The Event Where History Is Made” and talk about Lee’s experiences having judged the event three times. 

The “Dog Talk At Its Finest” mantra is well-supported in this episode as two veterans discuss many facets of the coonhound sport by way of their many years of experience, Steve as the manager and Lee as a major competitor.  This one provides an enjoyable look at one of the nation’s most important coonhound events.
