The Gone To The Dogs Podcast introduces its Legend Series of recordings with the nation’s best known and most revered raccoon hunters occupying the guest spot.

This week the podcast features one of the sports most respected and longest running breeders of Treeing Walker Coonhounds, as Steve brings the renown Jim “Wildman” Meeks to the Gone To The Dogs microphone.   Meeks, a first ballot inductee into the North Carolina State Coon Hunters Hall of Fame, is possessed of a wealth of knowledge in all areas of the coon hunting game. 

Steve and Jim, besides being contemporaries in age, have been friends for many years.  A visit with Jim Meeks is like experiencing a real, live family reunion each time the pair gets together.

In this episode Steve talks with North Carolina’s Mark Miller.Mark is a veteran raccoon hunter that has long been devoted to the Treeing Walker breed.  Mark’s Walker hound Dreamer was voted into the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association’s Hall of Fame as a coonhound. 

Through Miller’s association with North Carolina State Trooper Brad Hyatt who runs Plott dogs on bears, he became interested in Plotts, North Carolina’s official state dog. 

How does a houndsman devoted to a given breed, especially on that has been particularly successful with that breed, make the decision to try another breed, moving from the most popular among United Kennel Club’s seven coonhound breeds to a breed that has the fewest dogs in the registry?   This episode tells the story in detail including a discussion on the differences in the two breeds and why Miller was persuaded to switch.   Enjoy dog talk at its finest in this interesting conversation.

In this episode Steve flies solo to recap a recent three-day trip to Indiana to pick up a  new puppy.While in Richmond, scene of his recent trip to Autumn Oaks, our host takes a trip out to the Wayne County Coon Hunter’s Association club house, a massive structure for its type, to visit with the club that has hosted thirty-three of the Events Where History Is Made since Steve brought the UKC event to Richmond in 1992. 

Pup training advice constitutes the remainder of the episode laced with vignettes from prior UKC World Championships, an event that concluded its 47th year with the competition of this year’s finals just two days prior to the airing of this podcast.  Hound people struggling with training a young hound will appreciate Steve’s experiences gained in more than 70 years with hounds.
