Hound Dog Podcast Network by The Sportsmen's Empire

We left you hanging but, the wait is over!

Chris and Shorty catch up and talk about how to care for your hound and other hunting critters on a budget. The economy is in the tank, gas prices outrageous and dog food is expensive.

Shorty runs through a list of antibiotics, the types their uses and where to get them. Chris and Shorty have been caring for hounds for decades and have found sources for antibiotics that may not be labeled for hounds but they contain the same ingredients.

DISCLAIMER: Chris Powell and Shorty Gorham are not veterinarians. The information provided in this podcast is for reference only. Dog owners should do their own research and consult a veterinarian for any medical questions. Houndsman XP is not liable for any misuse of any antibiotic or for the medical care or treatment of listeners hounds.

Heath and Chris hit the Rally Point to discuss and recap The Journey we have been on. The Journey has featured the highest level trainers and experts in their field and Heath and Chris boil it all down and talk about how police dog training and working dog breeding applies directly to houndsmen.

There is a lot to discuss, so, tie those hounds up, grab a seat and break out the Jet Boil and brew you up cup. Welcome to The Rally Point on The Journey.

The Journey takes a trip to Auburn University, Heath chats one on one with Bart Rogers, the Chief K9 Instructor over the K9 performance program. Bart oversees the training and development of their working dogs, the breeding and selection program, validation tests for the puppy and working dog selection, all for their Vapor Wake program. Bart recalls his childhood where his grand dad had redbones and walker dogs and where his love for dogs started.

Heath and Bart break down the breed options, out crosses, line breeding and inbreeding. What to look for in making the different crosses. Some of the things Bart uses when picking the breeding pair, from traits, genetics and deficiency. They break down the two outcrosses Heath has made with his male and talk about the litter he is raising now. Bart gives his opinion on how Heath should make the next cross with the two litters he has. This is the podcast for you if you want a better hound and breeding program. Come join us as the Journey continues.

Tony Beals has spent a lifetime serving the citizens of the United States as a professional soldier. Tony, in his retirement, continues his service as the president of the National Plott Hound Association. He has also served as an officer with the Michigan Coonhunters Association. He maintains a local squirrel dog club. Tony Beals also has terminal cancer.

Chris and Tony meet up at Bluetick Days in Salina, Ohio for this deep dive into Tony’s lifetime of hunting and tree dogs. They discuss the challenges of being active duty military and trying to be a houndsman at heart. THey discuss the sacrifices made by military veterans and how we can all step up to pay back the price paid for freedom.

At the risk of being self-serving, Chris and Tony share military stories and how they have found peace through hunting and helping other military veterans heal some emotional scars by becoming involved in hunting.

Tony’s story should inspire listeners to do a gut check and ask themselves how they could be more involved to preserve, protect and promote this lifestyle of being a houndsman.

The Journey travels to Las Vegas, Navada to talk with Cameron Ford of Ford K9. Cameron runs his own K9 training facility and is the host of the K9 talking Scents Podcast. Cameron’s path led him to the military where he worked a dog for the Air Force. While overseas he worked with the German Police and attended forensic school in Holland. Cameron was a police officer, then ended up as an instructor for the U.S. Navy SEALs. He has been very involved with numerous studies on how dogs learn through cognitive testing. He follows up the testing process with a training plan depending on how each dog tests out.

Cameron and Heath discuss how cognitive studies show how dogs learn and different methods for training depending upon the results of the test. Does your hound learn through memory or inference?

Let’s get this Journey started, drop the tailgate and grab a seat. This is a class full of information.

When Houndsman XP host Chris Powell was searching for someone to talk to about the multi purpose and versatile Drahthaar, all roads led to Chad Reynolds. Chad is a professional trainer and hardcore hunter of all types of game. From speed dogs chasing desert hare to terriers incorporated into his falconry to big game with hounds, Chad maximizes the use of his Drahts.

Chris and Chad discuss this largely unknown breed by most Houndsmen. Chad gives the whole breakdown from breed history and testing to actual hunting. We even talk about how suitable a Draht is for most hunters.

It’s all here, in this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast.
