What a wild and fun episode with Lane Denney and Tyler Compton of Tier 1 Custom Calls. Lane and Tyler introduce the hound hunting community to their newly formed custom call company. Tier 1 coon squallers are a tried and true design and a leading call for coonhunters that are serious competitors. Lane is a repetitive world champion in different coonhound registries and Tyler is an accomplished and passionate competitor. Togther they know what it takes to be successful in the woods at night.
Every Houndsman should have a Tier 1 call in their hunting vest. The unique sounds and rich tones draw reaction from a raccoon when valuable plus points are needed to moving a black bear around in a tree to trigger a young dog. I have even used a smaller to find bobcats in trees at night.

The invention of competition raccoon hunting or nite hunts, as they are commonly referred to, is the most impactful facet of the Houndsman lifestyle. Any and every hound that is being hunted today has been impacted in some way by the competition coonhunting game. Dale and Clel Lee hunted hounds from Elbert Vaughn and Berton Oney. Who hasn’t heard of Dave Dean and his Hammer line of Blueticks? Nance bred hounds, Lipper, Albert bred Black and Tans from Gene Hicks and Warren Haslour and his Smokey River hounds are or were all coonhunters. Even the all American bred Plott hound has been influenced by competition coonhunting.
In this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast Chris is joined by Josh Micahelis of Big Show Hunting Productions and a well known competition coonhunter. Josh recently published a top ten list of things every coonhunter should know. That list took social media by storm. Chris and Josh discuss each point in depth. After this discussion the excuses are over. This is straight talk about competing with our hounds.
This is a must listen for every coonhunter that has entered a competition coonhound event, those that aspires to and the big game Houndsman that needs to know what is affecting and influencing the hounds we all enjoy.

There is nothing quite like the spirit of a family from the Old South. That spirit embodies the self reliant, utilitarian and productive lifestyle. From the Sportsmen’s Paradise of Louisiana, Chad Wall sits down with Chris in this face to face interview to tell a story of generational Houndsmen that settled a rugged swampland. Lizard Creek is truly at the end of the road. The only thing beyond is miles of endless swamp, coastal marsh and ocean.
Listeners will be drawn in as Chad proudly talks about his family history, settling the last piece of high ground before the impending swamps. The story includes generations of houndsmen that hunted out of necessity for food, the styles of hounds they developed and techniques they used to hunt in the swamp. They settled their own community and lived off the land through trapping, alligator farming and growing strawberries.
Out of that experience, the Wall family has capitalized on building successful businesses, building equipment to fit their needs. From the highest quality boat manufacturers to custom made dog boxes each item is built on experience and with southern hospitality.
So hold on tight as we race through the bayou country of Louisiana in a Gator Trax boat. The dogs are loaded in an Old South Dog Box and we are ready to go hunting.
