Episode 54 When a community experiences a crisis such as a mass shooting, hurricane or terrorism, well-intentioned “outsiders” often come in and try to help. But as our guest Rev. Dr. Willard Ashley, Sr. points out, it’s important to learn the language and understand the culture of the impacted community before attempting to meet its specific needs. In this episode, you’ll learn how psychotherapy can help a faith-based community heal from trauma.
ABOUT THE GUEST
The Reverend Dr. Willard Ashley, Sr. is a New Jersey and nationally certified psychoanalyst, certified group psychotherapist, and clinical fellow in the Association of Marriage & Family Therapists. He is a trustee of Andover Newton Seminary at Yale Divinity School and retired. Professor of Pastoral Theology at New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS).
Dr. Ashley did ground-breaking work helping clergy recognize and address their own emotional trauma and distress as first responders after 9/11. His interfaith program ' Care for the Caregivers' has become a model, and Will an expert, in how to shape religious communities' role in disaster relief around the world.
Psychotherapy looks deep inside of your emotions, your psyche and your spirituality.
Cognitive behavior therapy and psychoanalysis can help you find resistances that cause the inner conflict that pushes you to behave in a manner that contradicts your true values.
