A return to Lilliput
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I never actually read Gulliver's Travels or watched any of the film adaptations except for a few minutes here and there. I never took Gulliver to be a cruel man but initially in Lilliput, a cruel man is what I found. He is yet another example of human greed taking over and creating a monster.
Lily was a formidable hero who never got so discouraged she gave up on what she believed in. This sets a good example for the young readers the book is targeting. However, while it's made up language, she still had a foul mouth.
The illustrations were very entertaining and well done. I enjoyed looking them over as much as I enjoyed reading the book.
I'm not happy with the ending. Gulliver's character is redeemed but at the cost of his life. Yes he was nasty at first but it seems like a harsh ending. Plinker could have been punished for just about anything and the author could have had him arrested for something other than Gulliver's murder. At least Lily and Finn got the happy endings they deserved.
Also a note for parents: if you are purchasing this for a younger reader the ending is pretty violent. You may want to reconsider until you read it yourselves.
4 stars because the ending was less than satisfying.
the bookâs blemishes are easily vanquished by a beautifully maneuvered
Sam Gayton's Lilliput is a fantastical novel based in 18th century London. The tale, heavily inspired by the classic Gulliver's Travels, opens on the mythical island of Lilliput, home to a kingdom of miniature people, the Lilliputians. All is marvelous on the island until Lily, a three-inch-tall Lilliputian child, is kidnapped by the "giant" Gulliver and whisked away to London to be exhibited as evidence of Lilliput's existence. However, Lily has plans of her own: escape. With the help of an enslaved clock maker's apprentice, a jolly chocolate chef, and a Spanish parrot, will Lily ever see her home and family again? How far will her desperate determination guide her, and what sacrifices will be made along the journey?
This thought-provoking novel is an action-packed adventure to read. Compared to the innumerable futuristic tales of modern literature, Lilliput is uniquely set deep in history. In addition, the book is remarkably engineered for readers of all ages; its simple vocabulary and plot line pertain to young children, whereas its vivid themes and cryptic metaphors will quench the thirst of even adults.
