How to Ease into Autumn: Herbs & traditional practices to support this seasonal transition in your body + mind

Have you noticed how many people acknowledge the seasonal transition from summer to autumn? It's one of the most talked about events-of-the-year.

Maybe that's because it's such a dramatic change. The vibrant heat and buoyancy of summer give way to the brilliant display of color and shedding of leaves on trees, and the return to the earth of many annual and perennial plants.

It's a small death, every year. And while we get used to it, and we trust that spring will come again, we also have to reckon with the diminishing light and the oncoming cold.

That said, most of us live in very protected environments shielded from the elements and are not subject to the "danger" of winter that our ancestors used to be.

Still, we feel it, and our bodies feel it too. Seasonal change is inherently destabilizing.

And from an Ayurvedic perspective, when we go from summer to fall, it's actually common to have over-accumulated heat from the summer that peaks in symptoms in early fall.

So instead of diving immediately into the spicy chai (and even pumpkin spice drinks) that are easy to desire as the cool weather sets in, it's actually important to cool and calm the heat, to simplify your diet a bit, and give your body a little support as it adjusts.

I dive into how all of this can look and more in this week's episode.

Listen in to learn:

  • what NOT to do right after autumn equinox
  • why you might actually need to focus on cooling rather than warming
  • how Ayurveda views seasonal transitions
  • a few signs and symptoms to look out for as the cooler weather sets in
  • some herbs and foods that can be helpful for the shift from summer to fall
