A lovely widow plans to marry a French count in this historical romance by best-selling author Marion Chesney.
It was true. The lovely young widow Lady Charteris - Delphine to her friends - had agreed to abide by her parents' wishes and marry the comte Saint-Pierre. Delphine's parents had long since died in the Terror, but when she learned of their wishes for her, she believed it her duty to respect their wishes. Delphine would marry, but it would be a marriage in name only.
But when Delphine saw Jules Saint-Pierre, she got the shock of her life: He was the same man she had seen juggling in the streets at a local fair. What was he doing as the comte Saint-Pierre? Was he posing? Had she made some terrible mistake?

Don't Believe Everything You See
This was a true delight! I have read many of Ms Beaton's books and this is a favorite. Delphine and Jules enter into a marriage of convenience and her sister-in-law creates problems. An amusing story.
Lazy but interesting
This book, like it's hero, has a wealth of potential that never quite reveals itself. All through the book the hero and heroine circle around each other saying and doing hurtful things and concealing their true selves from the other. The Hero is especially guilty of this because he is ridiculously lazy. He really isn't, but he spends so much time cultivating that persona that it is all the reader gets to see. And then he fully reveals himself as a hero in truth... off-stage. How vexing. One moment the heroine is flying to London, heart-broken, and the next chapter starts with the hero at the aftermath of Waterloo... What?!? The story was really unique and interesting but never lived up to its potential. It would have been fascinating to see more of the lives of the French emigrees and ridden with Jules when he went abroad, but those aspects were glossed over in favor of a childish heroine' s tantrums and a constant euology to a dead man. Vexing indeed. Still, not a terrible read. Recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
VERY DISAPPOINTD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MARION CHESNEY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS, HOWEVER THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST BORING BOOKS I'VE EVER READ.
THE PERSONS REVIEW THAT SAID THIS BOOK WAS HILARIOUS (WHICH IS THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS BOOK) NEEDS TO SAY WHAT PART THAT WAS, I COULDN`T EVEN FIND ANYTHING TO SMILE ABOUT. THE HERIONE WAS SPOILT, ARROGANT, RUDE, AND COMPLETELY SELF SERVING, IF IT HAD BEEN BY ANY OTHER AUTHOR, I WOULD HAVE QUIT READING IT HALF WAY THROUGH IT.
My least favorite book from MC Beaton
I forced myself to finish this book. I did not care for either main character. My favorite character was Charlie. Delphine was self-righteous and forever angry. The character of Jules had no depth. I didn't feel their "genuineness".
I love MC Beaton and enjoy reading her books very much. My favorite series is the Poor Relation series. This book did not measure up to the other books I have read by Beaton, and I have read A LOT OF THEM!!!
One of the better ones
This is one of Chesney/Beaton's better reads. I found it light and entertaining, and it is a bit different from the usual run, in that the hero and heroine are both French emigres, and the gentleman, although fashionable, has had to work for a living for most of his adult life.
