    Publisher's Summary:
The perma players' new reality gains depth and color. The virtual world has seen its first birth - and its first death. The invisible umbilical cord connecting AlterWorld to Earth grows thinner, and even the Fallen One cannot prevent the looming catastrophe. Could Max have ignored the Russian girl who'd just escaped slavery in a virtual China? Could he have turned a deaf ear to her pleas as the desperate fugitive clutched at straws on hearing her native tongue? All this triggers a full-blown confrontation, sending armies of thousands into battle in the heart of the Frontier, burning kilotons of mana, melting desert sands and hacking through impervious mithril armor. The two nations' furious war cries obscure the sky as the gods shudder at humans' desperate cruelty.

    Oh what a beating...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was mostly a time killer - it's the 3rd book in a series that has been OK but going downhill.
What did you like best about this story?
When the storyline focused on the gameplay and character relations - that I could see.
What didnt you like about Michael Goldstroms performance?
It was bland. The voices were too similar between characters. The cadence was quite quirky and inflections on the wrong words would make the story stutter rather than flow or create an emotion.
Do you think The Duty needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It has one - The Inferno, which I haven't decided if I'm going to purchase yet. The three so far have gone downhill and the last book could be, well, less.
There was a decent cliff-hanger however, so that's the only thing that still has me on the hook.
    Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful story concept - I'm a huge fan of gaming storylines. This is the first series I've experienced about mmorpg gaming. It's a fairly new and modern book and set in the future and translated from Russian. I think my issues with this book lie there.
I noticed that the first story had a few odd things in the cadence and vocabulary at times. The Clan continued the strangeness and leveled it up a bit. However, The Duty reached a new level of weird- there is a lot of jumping around and disjointed topics. There is also a large amount of Nationalism and saber-rattling about historic conflicts that distracted from this being a story about gaming. Yes, a bit of it is necessary to set up how various governments are going to handle the laws and crime and punishment of the virtual world, but I didn't handle it well, with an eye-roll occasionally when he started on a new tangent about the Chinese or Germans in an old Russian conflict.
The other part of the translation is that the vocal cadence didn't seem smooth or continuous. A sentence would end as a question and there would be a pause like a written paragraph break and then another sentence that should be part of the same conversation would seem totally unrelated.
The vocalizations for the most part were quite similar and I would loose track of who was speaking at times.
There were some fun and 'visually stimulating ' pieces to the story.

    Sophomoric
What would have made AlterWorld better?
The writing style was immature. The author frequently introduces scenes with over the top characterizations hinting that the fight is unwinnable which the character proceeds to mundanely win anyways. The book feels like a male fantasy scribbling.
It also ends in the middle of the story with little if anything resolved.
Has AlterWorld turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. This book feels poorly planned and executed, which probably reflects the writer rather than the type of book.
What does Michael Goldstrom bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The reader is competent and expressive. He has to work with the writer's exaggerated narrative, though.
    MY INNER PIG
    STRENGTH VS INTELLIGENCE
Let me start with what I like, as I was entertained, but my list of problems are long. The possibility of being able to imprint your mind into a game is intriguing. Being able to cheat death also intriguing. At times I wanted to quit listening and go play a game. Figuring out how the game worked was interesting and for the first half of the game I was at five star level. I also liked that this player chose to have an intelligent player, figuring the majority of players would go for strength. It is weird that they put a sword on the cover of the book, as this player never uses one. I also like books by foreign authors, just so I can get a feel for their culture. What it would be like to live in a game and not be able to leave is probably what carries this whole story.
MY STOMACH THINKS MY THROATS CUT
I gave Nick from Ga. a helpful vote as he hits the nail on the head. I am an old man, so I am not as much in to gaming as the generation of my kids, but I do know enough. I know that these games are set up for it to take you awhile to learn how to play. That you are going to die several times trying to figure the game out. I can only recall this character dying once. In hours, he is levels above players who have been at the game for weeks. The story could have been better with more conflict and had the main character had a harder time of it. It shows a weakness in the author's abilities that he made it so easy. He also makes a big deal out of the fact that he did not check this world out too carefully before he decided to make it his world for eternity.

Not really a series, just one huge book broken up.
this is the second book without it's own distinct plot. there are plot points for the "series" but no individual plot or each book. a promising series, ruined by marketing. if the five decent - sized "parts" in the series had been combined into two or three complete, and long, books THEN it would have been my new favorite series. as it is, I'm bailing at two "books".
    very mediocre
the book tends to have its most dramatic plot devices at the end of the story. The translation of the book produces quirky expressions. other reviewers are correct, there is very minimal plot and drama. The main character just does his thing as he gets and loses opportunities.
I'm curious about the next book, but I rather not spend a credit on that curiosity. I rather spend that credit on better works.
Just as Good as Book 1!
This story just keeps getting better and better! As with the first book, I finished this one in one sitting and immediately purchased book three. It's rare to find a series that holds my attention and delivers such a compelling story. Highly Recommended!
Really enjoyed the story I had to stop
I really enjoy the story idea. I think it is a fresh and it brings me back to when I played MMORPGs. I would recommended the books. The narrator does a good job. Not great, but good.
This is going to sound ridiculous, but I had to stop because I couldn't stand the main character saying "my inner greedy pig". Every time I heard it I would get a little more frustrated with the book. I think I was only two hours in on this book and had counted him saying it over 10 times. The last straw was when he said it 4 times in the span of 10 minutes.
Decent story idea, good narrator and okay writing.
Great book, but then the half-assed romance.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If i made a checklist for this book on how it delivers on execution, you'd see a page almost entirely made up of check marks. The only two checks that really get overlooked here are conflict and romance, but these two elements are critical and their lack is a devastating blow to what could have been a fantastic book.

Length: 16 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-06-15
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2064 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of The Martian, an extraordinary new thriller of the future from number-one New York Times best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Sandford and internationally known photo-artist and science fiction aficionado Ctein.
Over the course of 37 books, John Sandford has proven time and again his unmatchable talents for electrifying plots, rich characters, sly wit, and razor-sharp dialogue. Now, in collaboration with Ctein, he proves it all once more in a stunning new thriller, a story as audacious as it is deeply satisfying.
The year is 2066. A Caltech intern inadvertently notices an anomaly from a space telescope - something is approaching Saturn and decelerating. Space objects don't decelerate. Spaceships do.
A flurry of top-level government meetings produces the inescapable conclusion: Whatever built that ship is at least 100 years ahead in hard and soft technology, and whoever can get their hands on it exclusively and bring it back will have an advantage so large, no other nation can compete. A conclusion the Chinese definitely agree with when they find out.
The race is on, and a remarkable adventure begins - an epic tale of courage, treachery, resourcefulness, secrets, surprises, and astonishing human and technological discovery, as the members of a hastily thrown-together crew find their strength and wits tested against adversaries both of this Earth and beyond. What happens is nothing like you expect - and everything you could want from one of the world's greatest masters of suspense.

I kept waiting for this book to disappoint me...
What other book might you compare Saturn Run to and why?
"20000 Leagues Under the Sea" meets "A Brief History of Time" meets Virgil Flowers. It sounds like a mess, but the authors actually pull it off.
Have you listened to any of Eric Congers other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. This is his best work to date.
    Any additional comments?
Highly satisfying story and master-level narration.
Best Sci-Fi Book in a While!
B.V. Larson's 'Starfire' and John Sandford's 'Saturn Run' are about the same thing. Each is propelled by a a cleverly different idea about Saturn and aliens. The difference is that Sanford is apparently not just a good craftsman, but a great one. Great? If you didn't believe it before, listen to, as I just did, the two books back-to-back. Unwittingly, Sandford gives Larson and us a writing lesson.
Take for example Larson's chameleon cast who abruptly display entirely new skill sets whenever the plot needs them. It's as if a stripper becomes a graduate engineer, a drunken sailor morphs inexplicably into a naval architect and on and on... Hmmm... if I could only awake tomorrow as a world-class pianist... Sigh.
None of that happens here in 'Saturn Run'. Okay, at first it's a little spooky to hear Sandford's Virgil Flowers in space. I mean Eric Conger's been Flowers through nine books so far. But Congers overcomes, and maybe it's his comfort with Sanford's own writing voice that made 'Saturn Run' so comfortable for me.

    Publisher's Summary:
Avalon was the flagship of the Castle Federation in the last war, now 20 years past. The first of the deep space carriers, no other warship in the fleet holds as many honors or has recorded as many kills. No other warship in the fleet is as old. Accepting the inevitable, the Federation Space Navy has decided to refit her and send her on a tour of the frontier, showing the flag to their allies and enemies as a reminder of her glory - and then decommission her for good.
But Avalon has been a backwater posting for 10 years and has problems a mere refit can't fix. The systems along her planned tour have been seeing pirates for the first time in decades, and there are rumblings of Commonwealth scouting ships all along the border. It may be Avalon's final tour, but it looks to be anything but quiet.

New CAG Curses Legendary Star Carrier
The story is about a soon to be decommissioned legendary star carrier and the tumultuous event that occur to her as soon as a new Commander, Air Group (CAG) reports for duty. After a too long (1/3+ of book) backstory buildup to size up the primary characters, the carrier enters into its first battle with pirates. Then, within a few weeks it encounters a couple of battles with an opposing fleet. In every battle, the underdog Avalon and its crew wins each battle using boldness, guile and space age legerdemain. Unfortunately, this battling technique is over-done to a point of lightly touching the farcical.
The Good: The writing was and narration were both done well.
The Bad: Too much time is spend on the love relationships between the various characters to the point of being distracting to focus of the novel. Also, the new CAQ ends up going from commander, to XO, to Captain within a timespan of a few weeks. Lastly, there was an overuse of 20th century idioms which gave those sections a cliche-ish feel them.
A good start for a series, but needs improvement
Would you recommend Space Carrier Avalon to your friends? Why or why not?
This is the first time I've listened to a book by Glynn Stewart. I liked the action, the pace, and a few surprises. Having the Date, Time, and location included with every scene change become very tiresome. I was in the military and I understand the purpose. But it took away the enjoyment of the story. The other issue are the sexual encounters. The detail was unnecessary. The story at times sounded a little like soap opera.
    Any additional comments?
Overall a good story, I might listen to another Glynn Stewart book depending on the reviews.
Could have been 5 star most might consider it so
The story was excellent and engrossing
The characters fully developed and believable. You would probably recognize them in person
The science was fascinating and fun
The scenes were vivid and easy to immerse myself in
The performance was nothing short of superb! The narrator's delivery and voices were a pleasure to hear. The separation of character voices is impeccable.

NOTHING FANCY, JUST THE TRIED AND TRUE
WHY MAKE FRIENDS, WHEN THEY WILL INEVITABLY DISAPPOINT YOU?
Ender's Game, Star Trek and even a shout out to War Of The Worlds was included in this book. I read the reviews and knew before a bought this, that the book was not real original. I had no problem with that, as most books are a repeat of old themes. Plus I like all those shows. I wish they would have warned me about how cliché the whole books is. It seemed to me that they took the script from several movies and shows, added all the cliché military lines they could think of, stuck them in a computer and told the computer to write a novel.
Nothing happened in the first three hours. A lot of authors, especially for smaller books will start with a battle event or spotting the aliens or anything with some excitement to it. Nick spends three hours setting up his universe. When the action starts the main character proves his cowardliness, by following orders to save some politicians over 30 children. He proves his manhood by making a thinly veiled sarcastic remark to the politician.
Did you know that in the future, the cold war will still be going on. That the British will be in space along with the Americans and the Russians. The Chinese, Japanese , French or anyone else will not be in space. At least in the first four hours there was no mention of them.
This is not a bad book, nor is it a good book. It just is. For me, I got down on it and just could not like it. Every time the characters spotted off some cliché line or tried to curse, it came out sounding silly to me. I don't know if it was the writing or the narrator, but I thought they sounded like a bunch of seventh graders trying to sound tough.
I'm not sure what to think about this one..
    Any additional comments?
Ok first off i just want to say that the beginning of the book felt a lot like Battlestar Galactica. The similarities are too numerous and too close to get over. On the other side I absolutely love Battlestar Galactica. It's one of my favorite stories, so no big deal right? ...kind of. I couldn't stop listening to the audiobook. The performance was excellent. 5 stars. It fit the genre i was looking for perfectly so i had no complaints there. Except for the details. I feel like the similarities to Battlestar Galactica could have been avoided and the story would have felt just as good because it really was just in the details. I mean how many other sci fi stories are at least a little similar to BSG...more than a few. I'm going to keep my eye on the series and see how the second book goes. Not trying to spoil anything but a few of the similarities between this and BSG may not be there in the other books.

    Exciting as Ever!
Book 6 was a perfect continuation of the last, and it provided more depth into the characters. I can't wait for the remaining books to be put out in audiobook format. R. C. Bray is perfect!
    Solid zombie story
This is one of my favorite zombie series. The story is good and there is plenty of action. I like the characters and the narrator does a fine job. I recommend this to all survival horror fans.
    It ain't over yet.
If you've listened to all the other books up to this point you need to keep going.
Great continuation...and still the most witty
This is such a fantastic serjes, the best in so many ways. Besides all of the superb elements you would expect in this genre of fiction, I find the writing the most witty. I find myself laughing out loud when the "operators" make their wise cracks.
My new standard for five star perfection!
Would you listen to The Horizon again? Why?
The only bad element of this series is I can't listen to anything else; nothing offers the same experience. This edition to this series is easily as good as the last and it just keeps going and getting better. I usually look forward to a good ending; I hope this series never does. The characters, THE NARRATION (absolutely the best of the best) and the flow of this series has me driving unnecessarily for hours and miles so I can find out what happens next. For the first time the end snuck up on me, wasn't expecting it and was a little sad it got here, come on #7!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Horizon?
When I hit select and purchased 5.0.

Different Than Expected--But an Excellent Listen !
When an author provides a prospective reader with 22 hours of book it is a sort of a offer to enter into a contract: "You invest 22 hours of your time -- and I will make it worth your while." I went into this (based on the title and reviews) thinking it would be an epic 'Small military Unit versus Historical Bad Guys Lost in Time Story." (We have had civil war units, aircraft carriers, destroyers and infantry.) But this is NOT a bang-bang-shoot-em-up story. It is the thinking person's military. I felt as though I were reading the progeny of a cross between Desmond Morris' "Naked Ape" and either "The Martian" or "Seven Eves".
That is lofty company considering the sales of those books! But this author carries it off, albeit somewhat slowly. Compare a police procedural mystery to a cop show with car chases -- this is an 'military-anthropological procedural'. (Some reviewers have characterized "The Martian" as an engineer's recounting of the practical problems with being stranded on Mars, mixed with the single-character study of the psyche of that engineer. This is the "how to" guide to showing up 11,000 years ago matched with a study of small group dynamics.)
It is fascinating. The author clearly knows the real military, weapons and how to write. The surprise is the degree of scholarship beyond things military. It is a little gritty in day-to-day human functions...but there is nothing gratuitous. Also, the narrator is really excellent -- almost worth the listen himself. I'm doing something rare....I highly recommended this book and expect that it may become a one of those you will remember for a long time.
One final note. At least one reviewer felt that the narrative lacked pointers that would indicate which character was talking. As a paper book that might be a problem. For me, this is one of the first books that was written to be listened to. No constant "he said" or "Mike exclaimed." It added a great deal to the experience for me.
    Different than I expected
When I bought this book I thought I was probably getting a standard out-of-time book with shallow characters and too much action. Normally I would not buy a book like that but the idea intrigued me and I wanted to give it a try.

The Kennedy stares into the abyss
The world's last floating nuclear supercarrier looks into the face of oblivion as her thinned, exhausted, and beleaguered crew face the largest herd of dead ever recorded. Soon the ship's five-acre flight deck will become the scene of a furious and desperate set-piece battle - like no combat any modern army has seen since Stalingrad. The ranks of the dead are infinite, and those of the living are tiny, depleted, and running out of time...and of hope.
The abandoned run ahead of the storm
Surrounded, cut off, and left for dead, Wesley's band of sailors and survivors race ahead of the city-devouring swarm, desperate for a way off the land. Air strikes and shore bombardment threaten to vaporize them at any instant. The inlet onto which they flee is surrounded on all sides and filling up fast, and the least hesitation will get them all killed, infected, devoured - or all three at once.
The operators jump into mouth of hell
Having already dodged a hundred deaths by inches, the operators of Alpha team and MARSOC now fly into two converging storms of unspeakable violence and must parachute in and reinforce the Alamo - the hopeless and doomed defense of the carrier. A thousand things must go right for them to have a prayer of survival. But it's the job of the operators to succeed even when a million things go wrong....
Ride the human spirit to its utmost limit in the most terrifying and thrilling Arisen book yet: Arisen, book five - Exodus.

    It keeps getting better.
    Any additional comments?
I love, love, love this series.
Forget that this is a zombie book. It's an extremely well written story with believable characters and the best narrator in the business. Each new installment gets better and better. The action walks a fine line where it never feels too over the top and never gets redundant, it's just balls to the wall intense. If you've not listened to this series then you're missing out. Each book picks up right where the last one ended, so you need to start at the beginning, but you will not regret it. The only thing wrong with the Arisen books is that they're too short and there's never enough of them. They're like the audio version of crack.
    Non Stop Action!
I found myself holding my breath through most of this book. It was quite a fun thrill ride. My here are only 11 days until Book 6 is available on Audible, but I seriously cannot wait that long. When I saw that there were 8 books in this series plus two companion books, a sequel and one other, I was simply grateful.
This is my new favorite series!
    Seriously good series....
Who was your favorite character and why?
The characters are what makes this series. The Zombies are just backdrops to a fascinating, interesting incredibly human cast of rich characters.
What about R.C. Brays performance did you like?
    For me, pitch perfect. Authentic.
    Absolutely riveting!
I have never listened to or read a book that keeps me on the edge of my seat like this series and I've listened to literally hundreds. Fuchs and James and RC Bray have nailed it. Hands down the best Zombie Apocolypse series on the market and one of the best military Sci Fi series as well. Characters you root for, non stop action - and I mean that; the Zombies are virtually unstoppable.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Lost Fleet delivers thrilling combat on a grand space-opera scale. Now Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary embarks on a brand-new mission - to defend the Alliance from itself - in New York Times best-selling author Jack Campbell's latest action-packed novel....
Two Syndicate World star systems have fallen prey to a mysterious fleet of warships - a fleet controlled entirely by artificial intelligence - that is now targeting Alliance space. The warships are no mystery to Geary. They were developed by his government to ensure security but malfunctioned. If the Syndics learn the truth, the war with the Alliance will resume with a vengeance.
As the government attempts to conceal the existence of the AI warships - and its role in their creation - Geary pursues them, treading a fine line between mutiny and obedience. But it soon becomes clear that his fleet is no match for the firepower of the machine-piloted armada.
With the help of the Dancer species of aliens, Geary has tracked the AI ships to their secret base in the supposedly mythical Unity Alternate star system where his fleet, the last hope of the Alliance's future, will end the conflict at any cost....

"One of the best military science fiction series on the market." (Monsters and Critics)

    The Alliance Strikes Back!
This is perhaps one of the most poignant books in the series thus far. Yes as a wise man once said "Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame. Whatever the cost." This time Geary and his closest must pay a high price to save the Alliance from itself.
Leviathan was brilliant. I loved every second, even the emotionally painful parts. I have been feverishly wanting a book that dealt with the political pieces of the Alliance. Boom, here it is! Yet every little twist and turn of the political knife could have jumped off the pages of today's newspapers. Political responsibility.. what is it? Who is responsible? Who holds the reigns?
I am disapointed that Mr. Hemry (Jack Campbell) no longer does the Audio introduction for each book... but that is such a small complaint against such brilliant writing. Thank you for giving us a quick peek into your imaginative world.
As always Christian Rummel personifies the people of this series. His work in bringing these characters to life has shown he is a master at his craft.
    Just Brilliant.
    Great Story/Conclusion?
Not certain if this is the end of the series or not but it does feel like there is closure here. More great detailed fleet battles against a very challenging enemy. I would love to get more details on certain detainees and factions in the alliance and to see what the outcome and fallout entail ultimately. Over all though another great Black Jack story!
The One We've Been Waiting For!
Recovering from the last installment, "Leviathan" is a strong finish to the Lost Fleet series - if indeed this is the end.
This does seem like a good spot to end it on, though.
