A very satisfactory listen

Earth is at war with the Argoni. To avoid being caught by surprise, human have set several outposts in order to detect any Argoni. Escaping from his sorrow, Landry Stanton decides to leave Earth and work on an outpost planet, Proc-One. While being there he is asked by one of the pilots, his only friend, to help him get something out of the compound. To avoid too many questions, Landrys friend decides to fly under the radar, but before then can land, the ship crashes. Landry will learn that they are in more danger than what they thought.

This was a very satisfactory listen. After a couple of just okay books, I am happy that I have stumbled upon this one. It is one of those that trap me from the start and get ahold of me until the very end. The characters seem real and we are provided with enough background from them. Their stories alternate with the current narrative in a way that they complement each other. The information was given in small doses, making me want to know more about Landry and Kate. Both had flaws, but also very humane reactions. Due to this it was easy to relate to them and get in their shoes.

The parts in which Landry is stranded reminded me a lot of The Martian, and his conversations with Harry made me chuckle more than once. I really enjoyed this part, wondering how Landry could find a way to survive enough time to be able to find a way to go back to the station.

He discovers part of the biology of the Argoni, unknown until then to men, and I found it quite original. More often than not we are not given a lot of information about aliens in books, and I found Healys approach quite interesting and refreshing. It made me think, in a way of the Pequeninos, created by Orson Scott Card.

Travis Baldree delivered a wonderful narration. His voice is clear and he has an ample range to give each character a different personality. It was clear at all times who was talking. He also transmitted well the characters emotions, and it felt like I was watching a movie instead of listening to an audiobook. It definitely raised the book to a higher level.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it left me hungry for more. I hope Eclipse of Procyon gets released soon as an audiobook.

A different look at the Utopian/Dystopian genre

This Utopian story is a detailed look into the main characters life during a sort of midlife crisis. I was kept intrigued the whole time as it was easy to think how this could potentially be our own future and let me just say that the ending had me reeling.

Very enjoyable!

I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this one as much as I did! The description says it all! I listen to all books at x2 so this may be a bit long for some!

18 hours of non stop adventure !

I really liked this book and Chuck DiMaria's Narration. The world that John Thornton summoned up left my imagination on overdrive for days after this book was done. The malevolence of the books antagonist collectively made me so mad. That is what a good audio book is supposed to do. Move you and make you think on many levels. Battle on the Marathon did just that and I for one am anxious for the sequel. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

good, immersive story of war with aliens

This audiobook clocks in at roughly 18 hours but the time goes by quickly. It's the story of a young man whose colony spaceship has come under attack by aliens. I liked that the author started the tale early, when a teenaged boy was placed in militia training to fight an undisclosed enemy. When we're introduced to the enemy aliens, the ongoing battle to save the colony ship begins.

This was an enjoyable story. It could have been shorter, but the ongoing engagements underline the magnitude of the fight and the experience of the hero. I was a bit more ambivalent about the ending of the story; I liked the idea of the epilogue, but was confused about people and places mentioned. It seems that the author might be setting us up for a sequel to the story that would fit between this main story and the setting of the epilogue. Also, I always seem to get distracted when an author doesn't use contractions in narratives; it seems very formal and stilted. It's a minor point, but it was a bit jarring since this story is a diary account.

3.75* for narration - The narrator certainly was enthusiastic, perhaps a little too emotive for my preference. Lots of pause breaks in the middle of sentences for effect, which seemed exaggerated to me since these pauses became quite frequent as the story progressed.

In terms of tone/volume, given the context of the story I can understand times when the hero would be hysterical as events in his life start to get crazy and post-traumatic stress sets in. It seemed that there was a lot of yelling and vocalized emotion as the story progressed, which would be appropriate if the story was taking place in real-time. However, the narrative was an after-the-fact accounting of events while the hero was having some downtime - a more reflective tone with spots of emotion would have been more powerful for me.

One great ride!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommended for a first-time author. The story is engaging and easy to follow. It's not hard science fiction (which isn't everyone's cup of tea), but the author put enough research into the tech talk to make it sound plausible. Plus, the reader was great! He used multiple voices and did them very well. I bought the ebook, but Mr. Trey made the story even better. He mispronounced a few rarely used words which were somewhat distracting, however, most people may not be bothered by that.

Full disclosure: Received copy for fair review. The story is a mystery, but it is very exciting at times, with good pacing overall. This is written in first-person, so the main character is well-developed and likable. If you are looking for an enjoyable sci-fi read that has intrigue, aliens, well-written space battles, and allows you to check out for a little while, then listen to this audiobook.

overall a good story

Overall it was a good story and I liked the ending. After about the first two chapters the good ole boy accent didn't bother me anymore, basically I'm saying I got used to it and started enjoying listening to the narration. Since I am non-religous one of the downsides of the story for me was the unnecessary use of religion in the book. Although it was minor enough I might be to overlook it in considering if I want to buy the next book. Another was the use of chewing tobacco which was almost enough to make me gag since I literally hate that affectation having had to work with someone who left spit cups sitting around. IT kinda turned me off. I may give the next a try but even minor talk of spit cups or spitting a in cup had me shuddering.

Intriguing story... but weird

I had seen this book and had it in my wish list when I saw it offered for reviews. I thought the idea was interesting and it is. It is a thought provoking book but jarring. The narrator does a good job reading the book without getting into the monotone or gore. To be honest I would never have bought this book - I don't buy books unless they are at least 8 hours long or an author/series I already know I love. This was an interesting story and the author did a good job with it but I don't know if I would read something along this line again without knowing it was longer and therefore likely had a less jarring storyline and ending. Personal preference. Good story - good narrator.

Interesting dark dystopian read

What did you like best about this story?

The Elder 13 had an interesting look into a dark world where immortality has been attained and the problems that arise from that. The performance by the narrator is spot on with good pacing and natural voices. The scene with the clown gave me goosebumps! The straightforward narration on several darker parts was appreciated and the author did a good job showing the twisted characters without glamorizing the behaviour. The ending was a bit too abrupt for me after the effective buildup. Overall it is a good story with interesting points and a fantastic narration.

Odd listen

Excellent performance of this genre-bending book. Not sure how to classify this somewhat morbid post-utopian read. The random sprinkling of religion and erotica was bizarre although the book nicely depicts the absolute corruption of power.

Another excellent book in the series

The author is a brilliant writer of detail in this series and this book continues that legacy. My only complaint is sometimes the technical details of astrophysics becomes a drag on the story itself. To much detail chews up to much of the book throwing the story itself in neutral. Having said that, its a testament to the plot itself and the writers own skills, that he overcomes this deficiency. I won't go into the plot as other reviews have done a good job of that. Just suffice it to say that this is a great series by a whip smart author.

Hard Science Fiction at its best

Start from Book One. Read all seven. Read Ian Douglas' other series. Prepare to be delighted, enthralled, and enraptured. Future history on par with Asimov's, Heinlein and Anderson.

Read it in one sitting

Have the whole series and this book follows the on-going plot very well. Sat down and read it without stopping. Will re-read in a week or so to pickup the little bits I probably missed the first time. Very easy and enjoyable read. Looking forward to the conclusion of this space opera.

Yet another page turner

All of the star carrier books have been winners. My only observation is that some salient plot points get buried by the scope of the story. I find I have to frequently page back only to find what I am looking embedded in some action 30 pages ago. I it certainly keeps me on my toes. So, the world wants to know...when do we get to read book 8? Have to find out what is in store for Gray!!

Great strategy and fighting with use of time travel. Liked the story of having to overcome highly intelligent invaders.

Great use of technology. Really liked the complicated story plot using time travel to plan the fighting strategy. Great action with detailed use of nanites. Looking forward to sequel - hope it does not take too long.
