Spurred by a credible witness, Erin cobbles together an expedition party consisting of herself, the witness, and his deer-hunting neighbors. They travel into the unexplored heart of a remote national park.
Erin, believing the Devil dragon to be a larger version of the Komodo, is confident she can outwit a specimen. However, the terrifying monster that lumbers out of the bush is a savage and unpredictable predator the size of a campervan. To escape, Erin must transform herself from genteel university lecturer to hardcore survivalist.

    Good Syfy for Your Ears
This book isn't deep or terribly frightening but it will hold your attention. It's a closer to a 3.5 over all. It would have been a solid 4.5 except, in my opinion, the main character is an idiot. You'll have to listen to decide for yourself but I found her incredibly annoying. Still I couldn't stop listening because I wanted to know how/if she would finally die. Also, I don't know if there is a sequel planned but I hope so just because of how this story ends.
I couldn't agree more with the reader's comments
I do want to know what happens but I can't stand the main character. She is so shallow and self serving and annoying.

    People Minus X
People Minus X (2.5 stars) - The background to the story is that the Moon was destroyed during a scientific experiment, killing many millions of people on Earth. However, it turns out that people can 'record' their personalities and memories, and then have those memories inserted into an android body. And even those who failed to have their personalities recorded can be restored by interviewing all those who knew the original person, to give a close simulcrum.
The hero of the novel is Ed Doukas, who is the nephew of the scientist whom everyone blames for the destruction of the Moon (though it's never clear if the scientist is actually guilty); this uncle survived, because he had left the Moon the day before the experiment.
Soon, the government learns of the survival of the uncle, and he goes underground. Ed soon finds himself a pariah due to his relation to his uncle.
As the story proceeds, there begins to be a debate, then more animosity between people who are natural, and the re-created android personalities, until it begins to resemble McCarthyism, as the naturally-born people believe the androids want to take over the world.
Ed learns where his uncle is hiding, and decides to stand with the androids, since the natural-born are so hysterical and are becoming luddites, i.e. they are against all science.
Soon, there is a war between the two sides, and that fills up the rest of the story.
The idea of recorded personalities is very common nowadays, but seems to me to be original at the time of writing (~1958), so that is always impressive, when a writer comes up with something new.
However, even coming up with a new idea doesn't overcome the dull style in which it is written, and Gallun continously 'tells' the reader, rather than 'shows', all of the events and emotions of the characters, and it is very emotionally uninvolving.

How could the performance have been better?
The plot was hard to follow, in fact I didn't finish it.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadness in having to use a credit on it.

Between the narrator and the writer this was not an enjoyable experience at all.

"The Misplaced Battleship" is a sci-fi short story by author Harry Harrison, published in 1960. James Bolivar DiGriz, alias "Slippery Jim" and "The Stainless Steel Rat", is a fictional character and the protagonist of a series of comic science fiction novels by the same author. "Slippery Jim" is the listener's wonderfully sly, funny and resourceful hero in this entertaining and amusing work; where he has to investigate and - hopefully! - solve the case of a dangerous battleship floating around unaccounted for.

    The Stainless Steel Rat Lives
Where does The Misplaced Battleship rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Pretty well. This is a minor entry in the Stainless Steel Rat series. Basically a snippet from the very first book. The performance matched the slightly over the top personality of the main character.
What did you like best about this story?
The performance was actually pretty fun. It added to the story.
What does Edward Miller bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The acting and inflections. Where reading it the dialogue comes across as a deadpan humor, here, the character gains more theatrical persona that matches the character.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It's a satirical book, so moved is not really appropriate. I did chuckle a lot throughout.
    Any additional comments?
If you have the first novel, "The Stainless Steel Rat" you already have this story. If you want a taste of the series without the large time investment, this is a good option. Fun.

    Choose your own adventure audiobook!
I grew up a huge fan of the choose your own adventure books. I loved them and loved how the story could be read repeatedly with different happenings and different endings. I saw an audiobook version and had to try it. I enjoyed it but ran into a problem. I mostly listen while driving on an accident riddled, construction covered, very deadly highway in Florida (I-4). So when it came time to choose, I couldn't just pick a "chapter" to jump to, I had to go to a specific minute and second. This was the books Only downfall. Had I been able to
Just say for the hero to do "A" click on chapter 4 for the hero to do "B" click
On chapter 9. That would make the book a 5. In the mean time since I couldn't take my eyes off long enough for the specific adjustments the story got a.l bit jumbled for me. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
This book was not meant for audible...
This book is like the choose your own adventure books from my youth. The audio isn't organized in ways to skip to the correct section and choose a complete story thread. Listening strait through makes the story jump all around and makes it confusing.
    Better read than listened to
    Any additional comments?
I really struggled with this book. This is one of those books that's better read than listen to in my opinion. I almost threw in the towel and did a DNF. But I requested this book and owed it to the author and narrator to give it my best shot. I have only listened to a handful of RPG books before this story so this may be a case of it's me not the book. Someone who is much more familiar with this genre may really enjoy this book.
This is suppose to be a kind of interactive audiobook. Which didn't work at all for me. I want to put on a book and just listen. I don't just sit and listen. I'm driving, yard work, cleaning or whatever. You can't just stop what your doing in order to skip ahead to the time given to take which ever path in the story you would choose. It affects the flow of the story, makes it choppy and affects your overall enjoyment.
In addition to that the story just wasn't holding my attention especially in the beginning. The way it was setup even without the "options" to skip ahead wasn't interesting enough to keep my mind from wandering.

    Boring, Boring, Boring
Boring. I very seldom not finish a book that I have started but this one was one of those rare exceptions. The long rants about how terrible the Kennedy's were just went on and on. If it wasn't JFK it was Bobby. It ruined the story. I enjoyed book 1 but this one is terrible. It was hard to believe it was written by the same person.
    I like these books
I like these books. Interesting alternative story line from minor fluctuations in history. A good read.
    Good Second round
Very good story line. The author does spend too much time rehashing back ground information but the story is the best thing. I look forward reading the next book
A Very Good Alternative Novel on the Cuban Missile Crisis.
I have read all of Mr. Philip's 10/27/62 series, of which California Dreaming is the American story of the Cuban Missile/atomic war crises. The "other" series is the British story of the same conflict of which there are several books. This series is to be continued and California Dreaming is the first volume. Having said that, I found California Dreaming very tedious to read. Mr. Philip has great literary talent, but he delves too far into character development that leaves me to want to skim the chapter instead of reading it. Some characters are so developed, then the character gets killed making one ask oneself, "What was that all about?" I am liking Mr. Philip's books and marvel at his knowledge of our 1960's history especially when much of the history is based on innuendo which has come to the light 30 to 40 years after the fact, like the Kennedy brothers sexual proclivities and the inherent distrust in their administration between the Executive branch and the Military, which are all well known, now.
Mr. Philips needs to continue to write in his manner, if it appeals to him and his method of telling stories, but be prepared to do some skimming over tenuous chapters of character building.
    Very entertaining
Builds nicely on the story created in book one. Reads like a cross between a history book and a reporters live story as things unfold. It's a fascinating presentation the draws you in and refuses to let you go as things go slowly and then quickly out of control.
Looking forward to 2016 and the rest of the story.

    Exciting!
This book was so well written that I could not put it down and read through the night to reach the exciting and unexpected conclusion. The story moved rapidly, the characters were realistic and the actions of the characters were realistic and logical. I did not want the story to end, and if you enjoy all of these elements as well as a great story....neither will you.
Just as good as the prequel
I need to learn to wait to read a series until all the books are written. Waiting for the next one to come out is frustrating! I read the prequel and book one back to back in two days. The pace is nearly frenetic, the suspense delicious, the characters gritty. A good read for a rainy day like today.
    an EMP strike... and... terrorists?!?!?
This continues the story of Wren Burton and her search for her family... and help that is no longer there. Again, I couldn't put this book down as the action is fast-paced, and the writing kept me wondering what next!
James Hunt paints a frightening world where all of our modern conveniences no longer function,,, and there are terrorists out to kill and create even more chaos! Where do you go? The very places you go for help become targets! Are you really safe in a survivalist camp?
Read this book for yourself! The flow from the prequel to this story flows smoothly together... I enjoyed though it scared me!
    I absolutely loved this book
Oh, my goodness! I absolutely loved this book, as well as the prequel! I love the fact that the heroine is not a weak- minded woman with a victim mentality. She is the stronger one in her marriage (which struck a very personal chord for me, not that there is anything wrong with a strong male lead) and I love that she fights even when the odds are so obviously against her. A very realistic premise (I felt it hit quite close to home; it wasn't far-fetched in the least), superb flow in the writing, and action almost from the word "go" makes this author one of my new favorites! I can't wait to read the next installment!
    Scary
I think a good book has a element of truth to it while we have good people in the world no one can say what they would do in a case like this

A Roller Coaster Ride Of A Finale To A Very Memorable and Satisfying Trilogy, Edgy And Speculative Medical/Scientific Thriller!
I stated in my review of Wargs: Dominion that Wargs: Outcast would be an explosive finale and it is definitely so! If anyone thought that Dominion was the better sequel, well, this one trumps it hands down.
Sometimes the third book in a trilogy can be a bit of a fizzer and total let down as if the author ran out of ideas or just got tired toward the end, but not so in this final instalment. Rutherford has been consistent in all levels of this trilogy, plot, suspense, action, characterisation, descriptions of genetics, science and technology and animal behaviour. Even his depiction of romance never lets up. Not only does all this form a solid basis for this series but adds depth and strength as well.
One thing I have loved about this series is how it plays like a movie in your mind as you read. I guess it goes without saying that this would make a great movie. It would, but somehow, I would just like to have this trilogy the way Rutherford's worldbuilding has been captured in my own imagination. Sometimes a movie destroys this and you are never the same again, and how you saw the novel in your imagination is gone forever.
In some final instalments, the plot is mainly tying up loose ends to close the series, but in this one, the plot continues the Dominion plotlines and sets the scene for the finale in the last third of the book. The plot actually gets thicker as the saying goes, reaches a crescendo or peak two-thirds into the plot and then a roller coaster ride to the end but that ride is not so fast as to leave you with a suddenly finished book and you are wondering what happened, it all being over so fast. Admittedly, I was left breathless and panting at the end while the epilogue enabled me catch my breath and leave this series satisfied with a contented smile on my face. It was hard accepting that this wonderful tale had ended, though!
Rutherford is one author who successfully translates the knowledge of his occupations to his imagination as he poses the question what if.......? making this tale very edgy and speculative, "....former army officer and a retired international technology consultant with a B.S. and Masters degree..... taught a year as an adjunct professor and three years as a science teacher in secondary education..".
