Today we're talking about a very taboo subject in the world of wedding planning: uninviting someone from your wedding! This is a major social faux pas but sometimes it has to happen. Whether due to venue constraints, going over your wedding budget, having a falling out with a friend or someone not listening to your rule about plus ones, sometimes you just have to ask someone to, kindly, no longer attend your wedding.
In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly how to uninvite someone, including a template you can follow and use word-for-word. Plus I'll share questions to ask yourself before you rescind the invite, how to avoid uninviting guests in the first place, and why I don't think you should ever demote someone from wedding party member to wedding guest.
Here are the exact templates I share in the episode:
For plus ones: "We’re so excited to see you at our wedding! Unfortunately, (due to space constraints/), we cannot accommodate additional guests/plus ones. Thanks for your understanding and we look forward to celebrating with you!"
For kids: "We’re so excited to see you at our wedding. Our wedding is adults-only, so we are not able to accommodate children. We hope you can still attend and we look forward to celebrating with your whole family at a later date."
For personal reasons: "Given the current situation, we think it would be best if you did not attend our wedding. Thanks for your understanding."
For venue/budget issues: "Due to X (extenuating circumstances), we’ve had to downsize our guest list. We’re so sad that we won’t have you at the wedding but we appreciate your understanding and look forward to celebrating with you at a later date."
