This life is a gift for us to grow and raise our energy. Growth comes through adversity and experiencing different things. To truly understand something, you have to not only "know" it but also be able to create it. 

That is why pain, sadness, and trauma can give you healing, happiness, and forgiveness. If you are only those positive things when your surroundings provide them, you are not those things; you are just a reflection of the energy you are around. And when this is the case, you will also be the negative energy when it is present.
