In this conversation, Shawn and I explore the roots of men’s anger issues and the key to resolving them. Vulnerability and the ability to express primary emotions is at the heart of healing anger, and this is definitely a conversation where we get vulnerable as we explore this issue, sometimes treading into new territory and wondering out loud. Mary K. Greer is an independent scholar, writer, teacher, and professional tarot consultant, known for her innovative teaching techniques.

Featured at most Tarot conferences in the U.S. and abroad, Mary travels the world teaching Tarot. In 2007, Mary received the International Tarot Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Tarot Studies and is a research partner in Le Tarot Associazione Culturale (Italy). Stephen Jenkinson is an activist, teacher, author, and farmer. He has a master's degree in theology from Harvard University and a master's degree in social work from the University of Toronto. He is the author of many books including Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, and, most recently, Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble. For the past few years Stephen has been touring the world with musician Gregory Hoskins and their Nights of Grief & Mystery.

Some of you might remember that I had Stephen on the podcast last year around this time, talking about his book on elderhood. That conversation left me with a lot to wonder about and this one is no different. What is different perhaps, is that in this episode I think you hear more of Stephen’s lighter side, in part because it’s an aspect of him that really comes out on stage when he’s with his band and it’s something I wanted to talk to him about. Since 2007 he has lived in the Colombian city of Leticia on the banks of the Amazon River. He is the author of the Ayahuasca trilogy which includes the project “Ayahuasca, Iquitos and Monster Vorax”, a series of multimedia books that studies the phenomenon of ayahuasca in Iquitos Peru, a shamanic mecca where the local collides with the global.

In our conversation we talk about the impact that the global interest in ayahuasca has had on the people, culture and ecology of Iquitos and the surrounding areas. Since my first visit to Iquitos in 2017 I’ve wanted to better understand what’s going on behind the scenes of the ayahuasca industry, and I was happy to find Carlos’ work. I found it to be a very balanced view of the situation and appreciated how he allows the people who work in the industry to tell their story. 

In his multimedia book, you hear not only from westerners who travel to Iquitos to participate in ceremonies and those that decide to open their own ayahuasca lodges, but you get to hear directly from the Peruvian healers, and their support staff and suppliers how the ayahuasca boom is affecting the way ceremonies are done, the way the ayahuasca is brewed and how the increased global demand has affected the price and availability of ayahuasca.

If you’re interested in gaining a deeper understanding of how the global ayahuasca phenomenon is affecting people on a local level, this interview will serve as a good overview of Carlos’ work, which I highly recommend checking out.
