Should journalism inform the public or influence it? Independent journalist and podcast host Tara Henley discusses her new book The Trust Spiral: Why the Media Needs Objectivity, examining how journalists abandoned objectivity for activism. Henley traces the emergence of journalistic objectivity in the 19th century to more recently, when younger, progressive journalists rejected it for “identitarian moralism”. She argues it is this shift that’s behind falling trust in media, critiquing major Canadian media failures—from pandemic coverage to residential school graves reporting—while defending objectivity as an aspirational standard and part of journalism’s public service.

Richard Shimooka, The Hub's defence and security analyst and senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, discusses Canada's Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) initiative. He explains how the institution aims to fund small and medium-sized defence enterprises facing capital access challenges, why few major allies have joined, and the growing skepticism toward the project. He also explores the tensions between Canada's diversification strategy and its deep integration with U.S. defence industries, questioning whether performative announcements address real wartime production needs.

Amanda Galbraith, co-founder and president of Oyster Group, and David Coletto, founder and chair of Abacus Data, join Sean Speer to discuss whether wildfires will become a defining political issue for the Carney government, drawing parallels to how the Harper government responded to climate concerns in 2007-2008.
In the second half, they explore rising support for socialism among younger Canadians, debating whether it represents a genuine ideological shift or simply a desire for systemic change. They also address generational politics, democratic representation, and why younger voters feel disconnected from current economic and political systems.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the Gordie Howe Bridge dispute and the deteriorating Canada-U.S. relationship. They analyze competing interpretations of the toll-sharing agreement between Ottawa and Washington and question whether Prime Minister Carney's conciliatory approach is sustainable. They also examine Canada's pattern of making concessions without securing reciprocal gains, the risks of Carney's middle-power coalition strategy, and whether his handling of the bilateral relationship warrants reassessment as trade negotiations stall.
In the second half, they are joined by Andrew Coyne for a special collaboration with the Munk Debates. They discuss Coyne's recent column on the state of Canadian conservatism, debating whether the movement has substituted aggression for substantive policy ideas. They also explore conservative insecurity after extended periods out of federal power, the tension between temperament and ideology, and Pierre Poilievre's leadership challenges.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the severe wildfires in Ontario and their political implications. They examine how acute environmental events raise climate change salience among voters, the Carney government's contradictory environmental agenda, and questions of state capacity as hollowed-out provincial governments struggle to manage large-scale emergencies. They also explore whether these recurring summer air quality crises will force a policy pivot from the Liberals.
