  • Trump’s latest tariff threats: Is Carney’s strategy failing?

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the rocky week of Canada-U.S. relations, from President Trump's latest tariff threats to child labour accusations against Canada. They also discuss Prime Minister Carney's strategy of "anticipatory obedience" and whether Canada should push back harder against U.S. demands. They also examine the Gordie Howe Bridge controversy and the prime minister's political vulnerabilities.

In the second half, they discuss a new DeepDive on the emerging doctrine of sovereignty economics in Canada. They scrutinize Canada's push for "AI sovereignty," arguing that government-led digital nationalism risks repeating past industrial policy mistakes."

  • David Frum: Is Carney's 'rupture thesis' a smart foreign policy strategy?

Leading author, journalist, and thinker David Frum discusses Prime Minister Carney's efforts to build a coalition of middle powers as Western allies reconsider their relationship with an increasingly unreliable United States. He argues that Trump's threats against allies—from Greenland to Canada—have fundamentally severed America's alliance system, creating a more transactional and unstable global order. He also examines whether Carney's "rupture thesis" represents sound policy or risks provoking American retaliation and discusses the limits of expecting a return to traditional U.S. leadership.

  • Trade tensions, climate politics, and Alberta's energy bargain

Keith McLaughlin and Amber Ruddy break down how Donald Trump's latest tariff threats could shape Canadian politics in the weeks ahead and whether Doug Ford has become a liability in trade talks. The political strategists then turn to Alberta, debating whether this summer's wildfires are likely to reshape public opinion around the province's evolving energy bargain and whether the Pathways carbon capture proposal still makes political and fiscal sense.

  • Why Canadian media shouldn’t be ‘Elbows Up’ against Trump

As new Trump tariffs appear on the horizon, Full Press assesses whether a patriotic press becomes compromised, critiques The Walrus magazine's revisionist trucker convoy history, and wonders why the CBC is only showing one side of the criminalizing “residential school denialism” debate. They also examine veteran Globe journalist Robert Fife’s admission that the press Gallery is likely biased against Conservatives.

  • Why these Jews are abandoning Canada for the U.S. Bible Belt

Joe Roberts, executive director of Jewish Tulsa and a Canadian expat, discusses why some Canadian Jews are relocating to Tulsa, Oklahoma amid rising antisemitism and what the mid-sized city in America’s Bible Belt is doing to attract them. He examines the safety concerns driving this migration, critiques the Canadian government's response to antisemitic threats, and explains Tulsa's appeal. Roberts addresses concerns about ethnic enclaves, immigration pathways, and whether Canada's liberal democracy is adequately protecting its Jewish citizens post October 7th.

  • Why Trump's 50 percent tariff threat may be overblown

Joseph Steinberg, professor of economics at the University of Toronto, analyzes President Trump's threat of 50 percent tariffs on certain Canadian exports. He argues the actual economic impact may be less severe than headlines suggest, as the tariffs would affect only a small portion of Canadian exports and major sectors remain exempt. Steinberg advocates for measured responses over retaliation, questions the effectiveness of Canada's alcohol embargoes against U.S. products, and suggests some U.S. complaints merit consideration during ongoing CUSMA negotiations.

  • How Pathways' carbon capture ambitions have changed

Martha Hall Findlay, director of the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy and one of the original architects of the Pathways carbon capture proposal, explains why she believes the project should have been postponed despite the recent agreement between Ottawa, Alberta, and the five oilsands companies behind it. Yet if that compromise is the political price of securing a new West Coast pipeline, she argues it may ultimately be worth it. Hall Findlay also discusses the corporate incentives that may still be needed to spur new oilsands investment, the politics of so-called corporate welfare, potential opposition within the Liberal Party, and whether Canadians can be persuaded to support the “grand bargain.”
