A topic too big for 1 podcast episode! On today’s show we interviewed Kaylie Zapanta, MS CSCS. Kaylie is a PhD candidate at USC who started out as a trainer and realized she was bit by the research bug. Initially she was passionate about studying muscles in athletes until she expanded her curiosity to the impact of exercise and gut health on people with conditions like cancer and Parkinson’s disease. She explains what her research aims to identify for people with PD regarding their gut health and fitness level.

Today we have a conversation with fellow Sparky, Lauren Sheehan, an OT who worked for 10+ years in neuro rehab and 5 years ago made the switch to the medical device industry. Lauren became intrigued with rehab tech while working with a patient who was using it and hasn’t turned back since! Her passion is now helping bridge the gap for clinicians who want to use tech in their practice to improve outcomes and to help the tech companies get in touch with the clinical feedback needed to optimize their products. She bridges this gap by hosting a Rehab Tech Summit with speakers across expertise areas providing continuing education, access, real world solutions for clinicians (such as information on billing and coding), and more!
Check out our conversation with Lauren to learn how tech can actually be accessible to you regardless of your budget, how you can help your patients and the companies more, and how you can get continuing education credit while you learn more about it!

We as healthcare workers undervalue ourselves, our work, and we struggle to ask for enough money. We want everyone to have everything for free but we don’t want to make sure we get paid to cover what we are doing. This episode was inspired by conversations with Sparkies needing a little coaching on what it means to create something sustainable. What good will you be if you have to end your program or close your doors? Listen up if you struggle to ask to be paid for your time and skills!
Wins!! How often do you focus on the wins you get with your patients and clients? It is so natural for us to focus on the negative and the drudgery, but what if you spent a little time each day to focus on the wins you had or heard about that day? Get a dose of the feelgoods as we share why this is so important to do and share some of our recent wins and what you risk if you neglect giving focus time to the good stuff.
Ever have a tough patient case? Ever have someone come to you asking for help on a tough patient case? How do you handle it? What are your thoughts? A lot of us may not feel like we are “expert enough” and it is tough. On today’s episode, we provide our solution to working on those tough patient cases.
In today’s show we talk about something we are seeing more and more these days… healthcare worker burnout. This goes beyond feeling tired and irritated because we all feel that from time to time. In the show today we talk about what burnout looks like and feels like and what you can do about it. If you’re in it, we don’t want you to stay in it too long, so listen up for some helpful ideas!

In today’s show Emily Duval Ledger helps biz owners to understand why defining your WHO allows you to save time, energy, lessons learned, and money. We tend to focus so much on the WHY (for good reason) but we may get distracted with so many ideas, different people, opportunities, and needs that we lose track of exactly WHO this business is for. You will come away from the episode with tangible tips to implement immediately!
