In today’s show Claire shares the program she is building at Rogue to help women diagnosed with Parkinson’s with her recent Parkinson Foundation Community Grant. Women are considered an underserved population of folks with Parkinson’s. Fewer women are diagnosed with PD than men and historically research has focused on men with PD (specifically white men). Statistics also show in hetero couples that the divorce rate is higher when a woman has PD vs a man, there is less caregiving support, women tend to be more sensitive to medication and receive less guidance. Claire shares a lot of interesting facts about women with PD in the show as well as the plan for how to better serve them.

On today’s show we’ll share why strength in older adults is SO important based on research. Some may warn older adults that lifting weights is dangerous, but what is actually dangerous is being weak. We’ll share some of the best ways Claire uses the Tidal Tank specifically in her clinic to give you some ideas for strengthening your clients based on her client educational series. We’re talking about this equipment today because Claire really loves it for multiple reasons as shared in the episode.

Jargon alert: This episode is intended for physical therapists and healthcare professionals who treat people after concussion. After reviewing the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for concussion put out by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. Jenn found that adding resistance with a theraband behind the head during VOR training for patients with concussion was really helping their training. She explains how to perform this technique and adds progression and variation ideas as well.

On today's show we spoke with Dr. Simon Maltais a cardiac surgeon and the author of the new book HEALTHCARE ANONYMOUS: Put Yourself First to Avoid Anxiety, Addiction and Burnout. Burnout is a really important topic to us. We are passionate about helping therapists avoid it or overcome it, so we were really excited to have Dr. Maltais on the show to discuss his experience with healthcare burnout, what he’s done to go “into remission” and what you can do to recognize it for yourself and treat it. Although there are definite differences in the medical profession vs therapy profession, many of the underlying principles span across the disciplines. We hope you find some helpful takeaways, in case you or someone you know needs them!
