Ideal Remake

When spooks and ghouls rise up and inhabit the world…. who ya gonna podcast with? Scott Carelli!

Scott returns to Ideal Remake to remake a movie that we were BOTH surprised that I had never covered before. Like, seriously, I had to scroll through my own records to double check! But we’re here to take one of the 80s most beloved comedies and remake it in a way that everyone can be proud of!

But did we live up to the hype? Or are we just gonna fade back away to the other side. Listen and let us know!

Ah! Curling up on the couch for nice TV session. These are the best 8-9 hours of the day! Who could possibly be unhappy while watching television? Hmmm? I have kids? And an upset partner? Well… that’s gonna have to wait because the GAME is on!

Dan Peck (@DoonPook on the socials) is here to convince me to get my butt off the couch and remake this hilarious 1992 movie! Well… after putting my butt ON the couch so I can actually watch it first. It’s complicated! But as long as we don’t get zapped into the television itself, everything is going to be FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii…….

We’ve done it! We’ve found one of the worst movies! But that’s okay because that’s what Ideal Remake is here for! We’re going to take this animated movie from 1972 and make it Ideal!

My guest, Jake Hoolihan (@KinoTripper on Instagram and YouTube), is an amazing writer and lover of genre. They brought this movie to our attention and we agree that it MUST be remade. By US!!

So sit back and enjoy a fantasy world where magic clashes with technology, a battle for the ages by two incredibly powerful WIZARDS!!

If dere’s anythink youse tinks youse might needs, youse can always reach out to yer frienk Popeye!

And that’s what we did! Incredible writer Matt Harry (@Matt_Harry_mh on Instagram) introduces Sam the iron-packed richness of this very silly movie. And it has to be silly! It’s Robin Williams’s feature film debut! Every single performance in this movie is perfect, so what on earth are we going to do?

Guess we better eat our spinach! Because then we can handle ANYTHING!!

Just when you thought it was safe, Ideal Remake goes after one of those movies that so many people would say is untouchable! But is it? Guest Dana Braziel-Solovy (@DanaBraziel on the socials) and I think that IF they ever try to remake Gangs of New York, we might have some suggestions!

Gangs of New York is a movie about the struggles of the working class, and if YOU want to help the struggles of the working class, then remember to vote union!

We’re talking about a video game movie?? That must mean that Alex Caine (@foodandhippos on Instagram) has returned to the podcast! We talk about the… miscasting of the movie as well as some of the other, more structural issues. And we don’t even need to hit up up down down left right left right b a start!

This episode is a lot of fun and we really came up with some fun, game-y ways to truly make this remake ideal! So check it out, and then let us know if we hit the high score!

It’s the last day of school! Time to celebrate the only way Austin, TX knows how… by having all the rising seniors beat up the rising freshman! Ah youth… But there are more ways to tell a coming of age story. Heck, this is only one of RIchard Linklater’s many interpretations!

So what are Raye Helvig (@RayeBoi on Instagram) and I going to to? I guess we better sit down and figure out how we’re going to remake Dazed and Confused!

You unlock this episode with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another podcast: a podcast of sound, a podcast of sight, a podcast of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… Ideal Remake.

This was an incredibly fun episode to do! For starters, this isn’t one story, it’s FOUR! (and a half?) So Jon Gutierrez (@DasGoot1 on the Socials) and I had our work cut out for us. How do you remake some of the most iconic pieces of American media? Well we gave it our best shot. And you can give that listen… in… the Twilight Zone!

The year is 1980. Star Wars is pretty popular. Everyone is talking about it. So what if, and here me out, we just did that again? No? What if we did Star Wars AND The Magnificent Seven? Heck yeah! Now we’ve got ourselves a movie!

Battle Beyond the Stars is a WILD ride. There’s space, explosions, that one spaceship has boobs… the movie basically has everything! So what can Tanner (@sparkyupstart on Blue Sky) and I POSSIBLY do to remake this movie? I’m pretty sure the answer is spend more time on the script!

And also more space explosions. Obviously.

It’s my Sesquicentennisode! Did I learn that word from Strong Bad emails? Yes. Do I feel good about using it now? Also yes! But that means this is episode 150! And I cannot believe I have made it this far. So what better way to celebrate this incredible milestone than remaking what will DEFINITELY be the oldest movie I will ever cover on this podcast!

Metropolis!!

And to remake this movie I am going to need some amazing guests. Kevin Mosteller (@kevinmostellermusic on Instagram) and Amanda Barnes (@itsamandabarnes on Instagram) were the perfect pair to really break down what makes this absolutely iconic movie so incredible, but they are ALSO the perfect guests to help me recraft this movie’s tainted legacy. Let’s trudge into the podcast mines and work and work until we get this right or die trying!
