  • Questioning the Entrepreneurial State
A book by Marianna Mazzucato called ‘The Entrepreneurial State’ looked to turn conventional economic wisdom on its head.
The book argued economic success is a result of public and state funded investments in innovation and technology, rather than a result of the small state, free market doctrine that often receives credit for strong economic growth.
A compelling critique of Mazzucato's book in the literature came from the book ‘Questioning the Entrepreneurial State’.  It includes contributions from various academics forming a cannon of work which debunks the Entrepreneurial State.
IEA Communications and Public Affairs Officer Kieran Neild Ali was joined by co-editor of 'Questioning the Entrepreneurial State', Christian Sandström, to discuss the book and Mazzucato's ideas.

Christian Sandström is Senior Associate Professor of Digital Business at Jönköping International Business School (Sweden) and the Ratio Institute (Sweden). His research concerns innovation policy and the interplay between technological and institutional change. Sandström has published more than 30 papers in academic journals.

  • Should the UK have a codified constitution? | Markets and Morality | Ep.21
This episode originally featured as a video on the IEA's YouTube Channel

After the political upheavals of the week, this new Markets & Morality episode explored whether there is a need for a codified constitution in the United Kingdom.
Host and Director of EPICENTER Adam Bartha welcomed Dr Austen Morgan, a Barrister at Law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Sam Collins, our Senior Advisor to the IEA’s Director General to the conversation.
Dr Morgan argued that after the constitutional crises during the Brexit process made it clear that the UK needs a codified constitution and said that a new government after the general elections should make this a priority.
Sam on the other hand argued that a codified constitution could lead to more centralisation of power and that the democratic mechanism of the UK, albeit imperfect, are able to deal with upcoming challenges better than if we uprooted our whole constitutional arrangement.

  • Should classical liberals support NATO expansion? | Markets and Morality | Ep.19
Episodes of Markets & Morality are originally featured on the IEA's YouTube Channel.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership, officially ending their decades long military independence. But given the history of NATO, how enthusiastic should classical liberals be to further expand the military alliance? Is NATO suitable for the challenges of the 21st century or should alternative arrangements be concluded within the framework of the EU and between liberal democracies?
To discuss these recent developments, Christopher Preble, the Co-director of the New American Engagement Initiative at the Atlantic Council and Emanuel Örtengren, the Acting Director of Stockholm Free World Forum, joined Adam Bartha on Markets & Morality.

  • Business sentiment and economic outcomes
How much is current volatility in financial markets driven by fear or uncertainty about future developments rather than by concrete economic news?  IEA Communications and Public Affairs Officer Kieran Neild-Ali sat down to discuss this with Dr Ali Kabiri who is Head of the Department of Economics and International Studies at the University of Buckingham. Dr Kabiri recently co-authored a report for the Academic Journal, the Economic History Review, on the role of sentiment in the US economy: 1920 to 1934. The research explored how sentiment moved the economy at critical moments in the 1920s.
