  • The myth of the ’Post-War Consensus’
The post-war consensus. This is something that many of us take for granted as first, having existed and secondly, what drove the statism of pre-Thatcherite governments. However, Dr Steve Davies, IEA Head of Education, thinks otherwise. In this fascinating lecture, Steve describes the history of free market conservatism before Thatcher.
Dr Steve Davies is the Head of Education at the IEA. Previously he was program officer at the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) at George Mason University in Virginia. He joined IHS from the UK where he was Senior Lecturer in the Department of History and Economic History at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center at Bowling Green State University, Ohio. A historian, he graduated from St Andrews University in Scotland in 1976 and gained his PhD from the same institution in 1984. He has authored several books, including Empiricism and History (Palgrave Macmillan, 2003) and was co-editor with Nigel Ashford of The Dictionary of Conservative and Libertarian Thought (Routledge, 1991).

  • Do economic sanctions work? | Markets & Morality
Since the Russian aggression towards Ukraine, Western countries have imposed a wide range of economic sanctions on the regime and on individuals linked to them.
How effective are these sanctions and who are they meant to target?
Adam Bartha welcomed Jessica Miller, the Founder of Strela Advisory and Fred Roeder, the Founder of Consumer Choice Center to debate the issue. Fred highlighted that the belated European actions against Russian are necessary to stop Russian’s ability to inflict further pain on their neighbours, even if it has high economic costs on EU countries. Jessica argued against broad-based economic sanctions implemented for individuals, as the believes they are ineffective in changing Putin’s mind and deteriorate the rule of law in European countries.

  • Interest rates: How to control inflation?
On Thursday we learned that the Bank of England's MPC voted to raise interest rates to 1% from 0.75%, their highest level since 2009 and the fourth consecutive increase since December.
The Bank is grappling with rising inflation – which forecast to top 10% by the end of the year – but also worried about the risk of recession.
But did the Bank go far enough. And what are the ramifications for the UK economy?
In this podcast, Julian Jessop, Economics Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs, assessed the Bank's decision and the outlook for the UK economy.

  • Explained: Libertarian Socialism
Libertarianism, socialism, classical liberalism, Marxism, anarchism. They're all terms that are thrown around in political discourse but it’s vitally important we understand these concepts and assess their merits and shortcomings.
In this podcast, we uncover what libertarianism is and why people on both the left and the right claim to be libertarian. Is it an oxymoron to be a 'libertarian socialist'?
Listen to the thoughts of IEA Head of Political Economy Kristian Niemietz and IEA Head of Cultural Affairs Marc Glendening.

  • Are our millionaires taxed enough?
Tax the rich! This is a slogan heard often in political discourse. However, there is much debate about whether increasing taxation on society's wealthiest is firstly, fair, and secondly, conducive to reducing economic inequality.
Moderated by IEA Head of Political Economy, Kristian Niemietz, Mark Littlewood, IEA Director General, debates the subject with Gary Stevenson of Patriotic Millionaires.
Gary Stevenson is an economist and former interest rate trader in London and Tokyo. In 2011 he became Citibank’s most profitable trader globally by correctly predicting that the aftereffects of the 2008 crisis would lead to a long term stagnation in interest rates and a rapid rise in asset values. In 2014 he retired, at 27, to study economics and inequality at Oxford University. He is currently working on economic models of inequality, wages and asset prices.

  • Explained: Labour Theory of Value
In the latest episode of the IEA Podcast, IEA Communications and Public Affairs Officer Kieran Neild-Ali sat down with IEA Head of Political Economy Dr Kristian Niemietz to discuss the labour theory of value.
Many economists subscribed to the labour theory of value, which argued that a good’s value derived from the amount of work that went into making it.
The theory has since been unravelled and replaced in the last century by a different theory produced by the Austrian School of economics.
But the theory is still an important topic of discussion as it was the basis of Marx’s critique of capitalism. And many detractors of capitalism still use the labour theory of value .
