With long waiting lists hampering treatment, public faith in the NHS is dwindling.

In this episode of the IEA Podcast, IEA Head of Public Policy, Matthew Lesh, is joined by Kate Andrews, Economics Editor at The Spectator, to discuss the how the NHS can be improved and to answer the question of whether it is a broken institution.

This Summer has been characterised by many as a 'Summer of discontent'. We have seen a sharp increase in strike action and a return to the union demands and behaviour that came to define the 1970s.

This trend has led many to consider firstly, if such behaviour is justified and secondly, whether the government has the power to restrict the unions' capacity to strike.

Who are the right allies for classical liberals?

Free market liberalism is unlikely to be the dominant political force in the near future, even though all of us at the IEA are working hard towards this goal! 

In the interim, in order to get liberalising reforms on the way, we need to work together with people of different persuasions. But who are the right allies for classical liberals? Can the fusionist free-market conservative alliance continue, or has the political realignment process condemned it to the pages of history books?

Last week, Meta lost its appeal to overturn the Competition and Market Authority's order that it sell Giphy. While the CMA's order that Meta's acquisition of Giphy damaged competition has been retained, it has raised debates over how much power should be afforded to the regulator.

To discuss this, Victoria Hewson, IEA Head of Regulator Affairs, is joined by a panel of competition law experts. The panel includes Aurelien Portuese, Director of the Schumpeter Project at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Iain Murray, Vice President of the Competitive Enterprise Institute and Cento Veljanovski, Managing Director at Case Associates and IEA Academic Fellow.
