The Institute of Economic Affairs hosted a discussion on the Impact of COP9 on Vapers. For the first time since leaving the European Union, in November 2021, the UK will send a delegation to the World Health Organisations Conference of Parties (COP) to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international treaty under the auspices of the WHO dedicated solely to tobacco control. COP is the supreme decision-making body of the FCTC, where all parties to the FCTC meet biennially to review the implementation of the convention and adopt the new guidance.

The discussion centred on who represents the UK at COP, how decisions are reached (and whether we should listen to them), the impact of these decisions on the United Kingdom’s harm reduction progress, and the 2030 smoke-free target. Plus much more.

Do you think women are referenced enough in the history of economic thought?

Given there have only been two female Nobel prize winners, could a lack of role models be contributing to this gender divide?

A recent FT article, titled “fixing economics’ gender problem,” argued that change to make economics more representative is overdue. Two of Europe’s top female economists, Isabel Schnabel of the European Central Bank and Margarita Delgado, deputy governor of the Bank of Spain, told the paper that the profession needed to do more to help women advance.

To discuss this, IEA Director of Communications Annabel Denham spoke to Vicky Pryce, economist, author and chief economic adviser at the Centre for Economics and Business Research, Rachel Cole Head of Economics and Business at St Edward’s School in Cheltenham and the IEA’s Editorial and Research Fellow Professor Len Shackleton.

In this episode, IEA Acting Academic and Research Director Syed Kamall discusses new IEA research by Professor Len Shackleton, Editorial and Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs. 

In his new paper, Ad Break: Why Curbs on Advertising Harm Free Speech, Len looks at how restrictions on advertisements by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) constitute a threat to freedom of speech and can restrict competition in the market.

He argues that now is the time to afford commercial speech the same rights and protection as intellectual free speech and urges the ASA to scale back its interreference in advertising.

The IEA hosted Mustafa Akyol, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute and opinion writer for The New York Times, for a private IEA Book Club webinar on his latest book “Reopening Muslim Minds: A Return to Reason, Freedom, and Tolerance”.

This event took place on Monday 17th May, and was chaired by Lord Syed Kamall, IEA Acting Academic and Research Director. In his latest book, Mustafa both diagnoses “the crisis of Islam” in the modern world and offers a way forward. Diving deeply into Islamic theology, and sharing lessons from his own life story, he reveals how Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries.

This book borrows lost visions from medieval Muslim thinkers such as Ibn Rushd (aka Averroes), to offer a new Muslim worldview on a range of sensitive issues: human rights, equality for women, freedom of religion, or freedom from religion. While frankly acknowledging the problems in the world of Islam today, Akyol offers a clear and hopeful vision for its future.

The Institute of Economic Affairs was delighted to host The Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for North Somerset, in the latest episode of our In Conversation series.

This webinar took place on Monday 24th May, and was chaired by IEA Director General, Mark Littlewood. Dr Fox is the Member of Parliament for North Somerset. He was first elected as the MP for Woodspring in 1992. He has held several ministerial roles, such as being the Constitutional Affairs Spokesman (1998-1999), Shadow Health Secretary (1998-1999), Shadow Health Secretary (1999-2003), Shadow Foreign Secretary (2005) and Shadow Defence Secretary (2005-10), and Secretary of State for Defence (2010-11).

In the wake of the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union, Dr Fox was appointed as the first Secretary of State of International Trade by former Prime Minister Theresa May. He served that position, as well as being the President of the Board of Trade, from 2016-2019. In 2020 the UK government nominated Dr Fox as a candidate for Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which saw him reach the last five in the election.

Recently it was reported that ministers are pushing for flexible working to become the default unless employers have good reason not to allow it. Officials have reportedly formed an advisory group from business associations, charities, and trade unions to help draw up employment guidance for flexible working. Are they on the right track? Has COVID kill the office?

Annabel Denham, Director of Communications at the IEA, is joined by Professor Len Shackleton, IEA Editorial & Research Fellow, and Sam Dumitriu, Research Director at The Entrepreneurs Network to discuss this.

Acting Academic and Research Director Syed Kamall welcomes Professor Christian Bjørnskov to discuss the life and work of two economists - Gordon Tullock and James Buchanan. Christian is a Professor at the Department of Economics and Business Economics, Aahrus University.

‘School of Thought’ is the IEA discussion series based on the book ‘101 Great Liberal Thinkers’ by Dr Eamonn Butler.

IEA Communications and Marketing Assistant Kieran Neild- Ali sits down with Professor Forrest Capie to discuss his latest IEA research paper ‘UK Debt in Perspective’ which he co-authored with Professor Geoffrey Wood. 

The paper gives historical context to the current UK debt figures, which currently stand at around 100 per cent of national income. The authors find that from the beginning of the industrial revolution to the present day, the UK debt-to-income ratio has mostly been at the current level, or higher. At the same time, living standards have been transformed for the better.
