If you fall off of a horse, what do you do?
Business, like life, can be full of unexpected circumstances. You might think you’re doing everything right and then realize you’re doing it all wrong. Sometimes you are in the right ‘race,’ but something happens, and you realize you’ve got the wrong ‘horse.’
It’s how we respond to these circumstances that shape who we are.
In the early days of ForeverLawn, Inc., Dale and Brian realized that it was getting more difficult to track sales and financials as the company grew. In response, they found a remote company to handle orders, track payments & bills, and produce financial reports.
Having a company on the outside looking in allowed the brothers to look at the business differently and helped them to make more strategic decisions. As they continued to depend on the company more, they decided it was time to hire someone full-time. They approached the company they had been utilizing about hiring one of their employees, and both agreed it was a smart move.
Things were going great, and then unforeseen circumstances caused them to lose a wealth of information. Even though they had to do it right and couldn’t afford not to, they got it wrong again! This will play out later, so stay tuned and subscribe.

How do you eat an elephant?
In this week’s episode, Dale and Brian discuss the installation of the Parkchester Field they shared about in the last episode. When they arrived on site, they admitted that they wondered if they had ‘bitten off more than they could chew.’ This was a new type of project for the business, and there was a lot that they had to figure out.
Each step brought new obstacles, but the team tackled them one at a time and, in the end, installed a successful project. This project ended up being a ‘game changer’ for the business. It was the first time the brothers walked away from a completed project with a decent check for their families. It felt like the story from Placitas Man had finally landed.
Sometimes you must be willing to step out and chase something even when it doesn’t make much sense. They were ready to dive in, learn, & ‘grab the tiger by the tail,’ in the end, it paid off.
This story will inspire you to believe in yourself enough to step out of your comfort zone. After all, that’s where growth happens, and you’ll never know what could have been if you don’t take that step.

Did you ever catch a tiger by the tail?
In late spring of 2005, the business had been operating as ForeverLawn Inc for just over a year. Dale and Brian were still in Albuquerque, had close to a dozen dealers set up, and were starting to see inquiries roll in. One evening, they received an email for a project they had never done before. You know the Karmie brothers - if the question is out there - so is the answer. Had they installed this type of project yet? No. Could they figure it out and do it well? Yes.
When there’s a challenge, they’ll always rise to the occasion.
It turns out that this guy owned a playground company that was doing work in New York City, and the customer wanted a field-installed as well. They agreed to complete the 60,000-square-foot installation, obtained a down payment, and the process began.
The to-do list was long - they needed to figure out how to fulfill this tall order: from what drainage system to utilize to gathering a team. How would they accomplish this? Listen in as the brothers talk through the planning process of what would be the jump start to the business becoming truly profitable.

Do you have a motto that you live by?
In today’s special episode, we share another “Moments With Fred” segment titled ‘Mottos to Live By’. Our dad was a lifelong learner, and he spent countless hours reading and studying. In this segment, he shares several influential mottos he gathered from well-known leaders and writers.
While some of these mottos are short, they pack a powerful punch. The messages behind them demand our attention and remind us of those who have gone before us.
It’s important to remember that our words outlive us and we should do our best to speak life into the world around us.
We hope these mottos are as impactful to you as they were to us.

How important is trust in a partnership?
While Dale and Brian Karmie admit they’re very blessed and thankful for their partnership, they often advise others against it.
The decisions that your partner makes directly affect your business and ultimately your family. In a partnership, if each partners’ motives and goals don’t properly align, the results can be disastrous. When considering potential partners, it’s important to ask yourself If you would trust this person with your checkbook, or more importantly, your family.
We’d like to invite you to listen in on this episode and encourage you to consider these questions as you navigate the process of engaging in a partnership.

Which comes first — your behavior or belief?
If you’ve tuned in to our show before, you’ve probably heard us speak on how you sometimes have to “talk the talk” while still learning to “walk the walk.” Today we’re reflecting on an early part of our journey when our “talk” started to propel our “walk.”
At the time, we began speaking to potential dealers but we weren’t well known in the industry. We were just two guys with a small warehouse. But we knew we had a quality, innovative product, and with time we would be the best in the industry. We’ve kept this posture throughout our journey and it has helped ForeverLawn grow into the company that it is today.
You have to have belief to take action, and often that action will propel further belief to help achieve success. Listen in as we reflect on how our first steps helped shape the business as it stands today.

What do you believe about yourself?
Sometimes how we view ourselves is at odds with who we really are. Growth and change can be uncomfortable and scary, but we have to ‘walk the walk’ before it becomes a reality.
Today, Dale and Brian share about an agreement they struck, providing a dealer with a territory spanning the entirety of Southern California.
As this territory was far too large to be managed by just one dealer, he then hired and set up a series of sub-dealers.. At the time, this was required to cover the territory, but it wasn’t what the brothers had envisioned.
Yet through this process, the company saw unprecedented growth and went from roughly 60,000 square feet of product sold in a year to nearly 40,000 square feet in a month. While this growth was welcomed, it stretched the brothers mentally, emotionally, financially, and physically, and it provided them with the growth they had been searching for.
Tune in to learn more about this monumental time in the story of ForeverLawn.

Troubles: we all have them. What sets us apart is how we deal with them.
We’re back with our brothers Jim and Ken for another special feature of our father’s radio segment, “Moments with Fred.” In this segment, which he dubbed ‘Troubles — Part One’, he speaks on embracing and growing through our troubles.
It’s easy to look at the challenges we face and feel sorry for ourselves, to let them slow or stop our progress. But we gain nothing when we allow our struggles to define us. If we instead embrace our troubles and view them as opportunities for learning and growth, we will begin to see the untapped positive impact they can have in our lives.
Join us as we discuss our thoughts on the words our dad shared over 30 years ago.

What is your superpower?
In this episode, Brian and Dale put Brian’s self-described “superpower” — his ability to laugh at himself — to the test as they look back to their time in Albuquerque, where Brian’s track record with trucks wasn’t so great. There were popped tires, accidents, and maintenance issues.. but there were also valuable lessons learned.
When things feel out of control, the natural reaction is to hit the brakes, but in some situations that causes a crash. Sometimes the right answer is to step on the gas and keep moving forward.
Through a series of unlikely events shared in this episode, the brothers learned some major lessons. What lessons did they learn? How can you apply these lessons to your life today?
Tune in to hear the lessons the brothers learned about life and business, and enjoy some laughs along the way.
