Who Are You When No One is Looking?

Who you are at your core always comes out eventually. In life, we have moments that tempt us to act out in frustration, but nothing positive comes from these. In today’s episode, Brian and Dale share a lesson in doing the right thing, even when you are pulled in other directions.

The brothers had on-boarded their first ForeverLawn dealer whom they dubbed “El Paso James”. They had made several attempts to meet up with him and help him get started, but every time they set a time and place, he failed to show up.

After many unsuccessful attempts, Dale and Brian gave their dealer one last chance. They told him they would be at his next project and that he needed to be there—along with four crew members— to learn how installs worked.

When the brothers arrived at the job site, they found two men they didn’t know and no dealer. Despite their frustration with the lack of crew members, a language barrier, and the absence of their dealer, Dale and Brian put their feelings aside and got the job done.

During their lunch break, something one of the crew members said rattled the brothers. Yet in spite of the challenges they faced, the brothers took a step back and instead used the opportunity to lead  these men by example.

Tune in to hear what the crew members said and why Dale and Brian are still talking about it many years later.

Do you work well under pressure?

Something the Karmie brothers have learned over the years is how to work under pressure.

In today’s episode, Dale and Brian share about the first playground they sold. It was a large project for them at the time at about 5,000 square feet, and they knew this would stretch their abilities and test their innovation. When the shipment of material arrived, the brothers were eager to get started—until they realized that the company had not shipped the porous plastic material they had ordered, but they instead sent one that was nonporous.

The brothers were left with a challenge that needed to be solved: How were they going to add the holes they needed to ensure proper drainage?

Tune in for a story of laughter, hard work, and innovation as Brian and Dale oversell and over-deliver on this one-of-a-kind project.

If you only ever agree to things you’ve done before, you will never try anything new. When roadblocks stand in your way, do you give up? Or do you find a way to work around them?

Listen in to find out how Brian and Dale creatively used trial and error to turn the wrong material into one that would work.

    What is your purpose?

In today’s episode, Dale and Brian share a recording from Fred Karmie, their father,  who hosted a radio segment in the 1980s. Fred Karmie emigrated from Syria to the United States in the 1950s with a strong desire to learn, grow his faith, and seize the opportunities in this country for personal, familial, and professional success.

Through the ups and downs of life, Fred remained an optimist. He had a deep faith in God, saw the world through a lens of hope, and stood as a living example of what it meant to pursue and achieve the American Dream.

In this excerpt from his radio show, Fred shares insights about spring and the lessons the season can teach us.

We hope this episode inspires you to pause and enjoy the beauty around you this spring, to open yourself to possibilities that seemed impossible before, and to live fully and make the most of every moment!

Have you ever worked a night shift?

In this week’s episode, the brothers’ compounding problems almost push their families past their limits. Money had finally begun rolling in, and Dale and Brian stayed steadfast in their decision to invest the money back into their business as they grew a national brand. While the brothers and their families had been no strangers to living on limited income, it was a different kind of challenge to have income available and still maintain the discipline to roll it back into their business.

The challenges were beginning to build on top of one another, and Dale, Brian, and their wives were ready for change. However, the brothers were surprised to hear what changes their wives had in mind.

Lorie suggested that she get a job to bring in more income. But with four children at home and one on the way, who would watch the kids? This led Dale to consider picking up a night shift in addition to working their business. Yet he knew if he went through with it, it would be the end of the dream to go national with ForeverLawn.

Around the same time, Angie suggested that she and their girls move back to Ohio and live with her parents for a while. Brian understood the stress this endeavor had put on his family, but knew their absence would crush him and his drive to succeed in the business.

Brian and Dale could see the business growing. Deep down, the brothers were certain they were following God’s will for their lives. They knew they needed to continue on their journey, and that they were only going to succeed if they made things sustainable for their families.

You may be in a season of life where you are wearing down. You’ve been pushing for so long to make something work, and you’re at a place where you feel like something has to give. We hope today’s episode encourages you to press on. If you are doing what is right and you are following God’s will for your life, the success will follow.

Have you bought any new tools lately?

In this week’s episode, Dale and Brian share about a monumental project at a hotel in Santa Fe. This project marked their entrance into the new market of commercial high-traffic areas. Up until this point, most of the brothers’ work had been residential. With this debut into commercial projects, Dale and Brian knew that this process would bring more than a paycheck—it would bring experience they needed to succeed in this new market.

This shift in their services and capabilities compelled a shift in their mindset. A larger project meant more turf needed to be installed. Up to this point, the brothers had resisted investing in tools so they could focus on the immediate needs of their business. But with an expansive area stretching before them, they knew larger equipment was needed. Not only did this project require them to buy equipment, but the entire experience opened their eyes to the benefits and possibilities new equipment could offer them.

It’s easy to limit ourselves based on past experience; but to be truly successful, we have to look beyond where we are and where we’ve been to realize what truly deserves our investment. Are you at a place in your journey where you need to invest in resources so you can serve others to the best of your ability? What possibilities are you missing by sticking to patterns and precedence?

We hope today’s episode will encourage you to stretch your beliefs and get out of your comfort zone. That’s where real growth takes place.

    Episode Highlights:

    • The project
    • Investing in tools
    • A shift in mindset
    • The dump trailer
    • When should you invest in equipment?
    • Overpromise AND overdeliver

Have you done your taxes yet?

Do you have a plan to get things done ahead of time, or do you find yourself procrastinating as deadlines approach?

Whether you’re first to file your taxes or turning them in on April 14th, we’re sure you’re ahead of where we find Dale and Brian in today’s episode.

Back in 2004, the brothers had been putting off their taxes for a couple of years. Letters started rolling in from the IRS, and they knew it was finally time to buckle down and get them done.

A bit daunted by the task ahead (and their overflowing boxes of crumpled receipts), Dale and Brian reached out to a friend at church who was an accountant and asked if he did taxes on the side. Coincidentally, the friend happened to have a relative who wanted turf in their yard, so the brothers struck a deal: their taxes filed to the IRS in exchange for a newly turfed yard.

It was the perfect deal… until Dale and Brian upheld their end of the bargain and had no leverage to ensure their taxes were completed.

Is there a task or situation you’re currently avoiding? Learn from the Karmie brothers’ experience and make the time to get it done. Procrastination only leads to bigger problems down the road.

What would your past self from ten years ago think if they could fast forward to the moment you’re living in now?

Would you be proud of how far you’ve come? Would the limited perspective skew what you see?

Last week on Impact Without Limits, Dale and Brian shared the story of Placitas Man and the impact his words of wisdom had on them.

At the time of their conversation with him, they could hardly fathom employing more than ten people. But they trusted his advice to “Press on, work hard, and don’t look back.”

As they applied his advice throughout their journey, the brothers found this way of working often required them to live in the “messy middle” —one of the most challenging places to be.

Today, Brian and Dale pause their Albuquerque adventure to share a glimpse of their present day, 20 years removed from that conversation with Placitas Man.

Did the advice of Placitas Man hold true throughout their business journey? And can this advice play a part in your story?
