Do you wait for the right conditions to chase opportunity?

Sometimes we like to sit back, waiting for the conditions to be right and the risks to be minimal before we charge forward. We ask ourselves if the risk really outweighs the reward. But what if, as a result, we are missing endless opportunities?

At this point in the Karmie brother’s story, they’ve just come back to Albuquerque after a defeating season, leaving them with no team, missing equipment, and forcing Dale and Brian to start from scratch. 

When they are presented with a huge opportunity requiring far more money, crew members, and knowledge than they currently had, Brian and Dale don’t hesitate for a second before saying yes. Though the risks certainly seemed to outweigh the probable rewards, Brian and Dale saw the opportunity of a lifetime with the potential to pave the way for business success. 

Instead of allowing the opportunity to pass them by, Brian and Dale decide to take on a risk and plant seeds for what they believed could be an incredibly fruitful harvest later in their journey.

Have you ever thought you had it all figured out–only to realize you were completely wrong?

After several hiring trials Brian and Dale finally felt their team was coming together and they’d finally figured it out. The two decided to take a trip from Albuquerque to Ohio to spend Christmas with their families. 

On the flight home, Dale reflected on what a great spot their business was in. They were finally operating as a well-oiled machine, and it felt really good.

And then… they landed. 

Their season of success and celebration was quickly met with a disaster back in Albuquerque that led them to fire their entire crew–over the phone.

How Do You Define Success?

Success comes in many forms and looks different for every person. Success can be a season of steady sales, or hiring the right people, or forming a new and helpful habit.Sometimes success looks like simply moving forward. 

After seeing a boost in sales and a short season of success from the Albuquerque State Fair, Brian and Dale hit another tough month in November. They continued to face the fear of being unable to feed their families and pay bills, struggling to find the light at the end of the tunnel.

However, this season, Brian and Dale consider their “success” to be defined by their will to just keep fighting. Come along  as they walk through a challenging season marked by hiring mistakes, growing pains, , lessons they learned along their business journey.

How do you respond when storms are brewing?

When facing a season of uncertainty in any arena of life– your business not quite taking off, your career path not feeling right, you’re facing a financial crisis or job loss-- whatever it may be, sometimes it feels easiest to hunker down and hide.

What if the best thing you can actually do is face your problems head on and keep trucking forward? 

At this point in Dale and Brian’s story they are just starting to see some business success. They are coming through months of a busy season selling many projects and going at 100 miles per hour.

Then came the “September Slowdown.” The two and their small team went from selling projects left and right and breaking down business barriers, to a season where sales had come to a staggering halt. This season of “calm” was actually a storm brewing for their business and they were feeling it.

When faced with complete uncertainty in their business, financial instability and even house foreclosures, instead of hiding in fear, Brian and Dale choose to step out in faith with the help of their confident salesman Eli and his “crazy idea,” that would pull the business back up on their feet and plunge them through the storm.

How does your long-term vision affect your short-term action?

The daily challenges we face can sometimes distract us from the bigger picture we’re working toward. What can we do to shift our perspective and not lose sight of our big goals, the vision that got us started in the first place?

Since the beginning of their artificial turf business journey, Brian and Dale will tell you they have always looked through the lens of “binoculars rather than a microscope.” Through all of the highs and (many) lows, the big picture was always in mind– even if that big picture originated on a paper plate. 

Today Brian and Dale talk through expanding territories of the Astrolawn business into Tucson and Orlando (two polar opposite landscapes) and the trials that followed. Their focus was not on profit, but on setting others up for success–something they knew would be key in creating a successful long-term business.

What’s Holding You Back?

Brian and Dale start to see success in their business venture out west as they begin selling projects more consistently. However they can’t seem to cross certain sales thresholds when it comes to the size of their project sales.

Have you ever gotten stuck in a ditch and needed help out?

Even if you’ve never been stuck in a literal ditch, you’ve most likely been in a life situation where you needed help.  However, when the time comes, asking for that help isn’t always what we decide to do.  It’s often easier to think we need to pull ourselves out of the trenches before connecting with others. But what if it’s in the trenches we need others the most?

As Dale and Brian pressed on in the business, they often felt they were on an island. Of course, they had each other, but they knew there were resources they weren’t yet utilizing. 

To continue learning and improving, they began to push for something that perplexed others in the industry: a conference where other business owners from Astrolawn could connect and bounce ideas off of each other.

When their idea became a reality, they made the trek to Las Vegas.  They were excited to share information and bounce ideas off of others in the industry. While others might view community as competition, Dale and Brian viewed it as a massive asset–and the encouragement they needed to propel their business forward. 

We were not designed to do this life alone. 

Whether it's family, co-workers, or friends, there is power in community. Are you utilizing it, or is pride keeping you stuck?

Every day, your life impacts those around you–is it for better or worse?

This week the four Karmie brothers spent time reflecting on the life of their father, Fred Karmie, and the impact he made on them. Today, we’re sharing part two of that conversation.

As you’ll hear in today’s episode, Fred Karmie was a hard worker, relentless in his pursuits, intense, productive, passionate, and occasionally pretty fun. Fred gave life his all, without thought to how far his impact would reach.

As Jim, Ken, Dale, and Brian reflect, one common theme unfolds: the impact of just one life can be extraordinarily powerful. 

It’s jolting to think about how different things might be if Fred had not made the hard decision to leave his homeland and pursue a better life in America.  The Karmie brothers, ForeverLawn, and the impact they’ve created would not exist today.

Every day counts. Your decisions matter. And as you’ll be reminded toward the end of this episode, our days here are numbered. 

The fantastic–and challenging–thing about legacy and impact is they continue long after we are gone. Is what you’re leaving behind something you’re proud of?
