Have you ever been skiing and had your skis start to drift apart?

Season two kicks off in the spring of 2005 when Brian and Dale are met with two diverging paths. They were beginning to feel like they were on skis, and their legs gradually drifted apart. Ironically, they had been riding that split for two solid years.

What they thought they created to give credibility to their business in Albuquerque had become a huge business venture they never planned on chasing. They were beginning to see major potential in pursuing ForeverLawn Inc. – the national network– long term.

How do you respond when a new opportunity catches your attention?

Maybe as you have started to chase something, something else has popped up in your periphery. You don't want to jump and chase that new thing, but you also don't want to ignore it.

It's great to chase your goals and dreams and have a clear vision, but it's also important to have peripheral vision.

Don’t go chasing after the shiny thing, but be aware of the other opportunities that could be surrounding you.

    • Intro to Season 2
    • The diverging paths
    • Staying focused without missing opportunities

  • S1 E44: K9Grass Grows Legs

    Send us Fan Mail

Do you listen or only think about what you'll say next while someone is still talking?

This week, Brian and Dale venture to embrace a new market within the artificial turf industry to meet the requests of pet owners and the pet industry.

Listening to the growing market needs, they heavily pursue creating a turf product suitable for pet usage. Through trial and error and months of exchanges with the manufacturer, the first K9Grass prototype was created.

Had they ignored the market needs and failed to address consumer needs with the manufacturing plant, they would have completely missed their opportunity to transform the industry by introducing the first-ever pet-specific turf, K9Grass.

If you ever get so tunnel focused that you fail to listen to the needs and desires of others, you may throw away incredible opportunities.

Keep the vision, but be willing to transition enough to know what opportunities are worth chasing.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Embracing a new market
    • Multiple trips to Dalton
    • "Can't you just sell what we make?"
    • The first K9Grass prototype
    • Trial and error
    • First commercial (and new product) K9Grass Install in Florida

Do you view increased responsibility as a blessing or a burden?

The theme of manufacturing issues continues into this episode. Hopeful and anxious to eliminate product issues once and for all, Brain and Dale take a trip to the plant in Dalton, Georgia to see their products being made. After continuous back and forth, they eventually make the decision to cut ties with their supplier.

The hopeful search begins once again to find a reliable manufacturer to produce high quality products. This time, however, the responsibility to find a quality product in a timely manner didn’t just impact them, it impacted the network of ForeverLawn dealers they had been building up.

These high stakes could be looked at as a huge burden to the two, or a huge blessing. Brian and Dale chose the latter knowing what an incredible opportunity they have been granted with their growing business.

This episode emphasizes the common theme along their journey that difficult times often create opportunity. Sometimes the worst thing that can happen to you is actually the best thing that can happen to you. It’s all about perspective. Every obstacle and difficulty you walk through leaves you the choice to view it as a blessing or a burden and that has everything to do with your success in those moments.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Increased responsibilities and higher stakes
    • Breaking with the supplier
    • Meeting with Tom Peeples
    • Some guy names Stan - The Story

  • S1 E40: Road Signs Are There for a Reason

    Send us Fan Mail

Are you reading and understanding the road signs in front of you?

As interest and awareness of ForeverLawn grow, Brian and Dale’s knowledge of the market also continues to grow. They receive inquiry after inquiry from potential clients wanting artificial grass and expressing unique market needs.

Instead of dismissing the unique requests because they had no idea how to make products to fulfill the growing industry needs, they recognize the road signs as an opportunity to grow.

They begin to respond to the growing market needs with innovation, a business pillar that would make them stand out in the industry.

If you see road signs pointing you in a particular direction, it’s time to evaluate them honestly. Don’t dismiss the signs and refuse to take action based on a lack of knowledge. Instead of focusing on why you can’t, take action and think of solutions you will offer.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Dog owners looking for a solution
    • Responding to market needs through innovation
    • The start of vertical product lines
    • What is your market telling you?

What happens when your one big thing turns out to be a dud?

This story picks up in the fall of 2004. Brian and Dale are still working to build ForeverLawn into a national company and are starting to feel the fire catching with more and more people interested in expanding into new territories.

While still balancing the operations in Albuquerque and expanding the network, Brian and Dale are approached with what they think could be their “big break,” a national television opportunity in New York. With very little coming through their bank accounts they make the trip and seize the opportunity.

The big break turns out to be a big dud.

Instead of seeing this event only as a waste of time and a financial woe, they take the opportunity as an incredible learning experience that would help them down road and move toward the next big thing.

Every experience is a learning experience. It may not turn out how you plan, but there is something to take away from every moment. Keep seizing the opportunity in front of you, and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

    • A growing ForeverLawn network
    • Two stops, two dealers and cookies from Seth and Candy
    • BIG break or big DUD?
