  • Separating Immigrant Families At Border May Have Lasting Effects On Children
The Trump administration is enforcing a “zero tolerance” immigration policy and criminally charging thousands of people for illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border — an offense that was typically tried in civil court under previous administrations. As a result, more than two-thousand migrant children have been separated from their parents who were jailed between April and May, drawing widespread condemnation from lawmakers across the aisle.

  • Austin Texas, Like Chicago, Is Struggling With Pedestrian Safety
Chicago recently marked one year since it launched a so-called Vision Zero campaign to reduce traffic fatalities and pedestrian and cyclist deaths. As the Chicago Tribune reported, the results have been mixed: Pedestrian deaths in the first five months of 2018 were up 31 percent over the average from those months between 2012 and 2016, thought motorists deaths still accounted for the largest number of deaths overall. Chicago is one of ten American big cities chosen to model Vision Zero practices in the United States. Another one of those cities is Austin, Texas, which last month wrapped up two years of Vision Zero. Like Chicago, Austin has been struggling to make progress toward its goals so far. Morning Shift explores the dynamics of the situation in Austin with an eye for challenges we share here in Chicago.

  • Dad-isms: Jokes and Lessons Our Fathers Taught Us
“I tried to get reservations to a library but they were completely booked.” Whether it’s a bad dad joke, a funny saying or a life lesson, you can always depend on a dad to impart at least some words of wisdom or humor to their kids. On this Father’s Day weekend, Morning Shift gives a shout-out to dads everywhere, reminiscing on the lessons our fathers taught us, sayings we’ve adopted and bad dad jokes that still make us roll our eyes. Morning Shift talks to Dan Zevin, author of “Dan Gets A Minivan: Life At the Intersection of Dude and Dad” about advice he got from his dad and the lessons (and bad dad jokes) he wants to pass on to his children. We also open up the phones to hear listeners’ dad jokes

  • What’s That Building? Admiral Theatre
Adult film star Stormy Daniels kicks off a three night stand tonight at Chicago’s Admiral Theater-the only all nude strip club in the city. It happens to coincide with President Trump’s 72nd birthday, the man she says was her one-time lover. While the Admiral Theater could be considered a seedy joint by many- its beginnings are more in line with mainstream Chicago entertainment history. About two times a month Dennis Rodkin of Crain’s Chicago Business brings us stories of Chicago area buildings in a segment we call What’s That Building. He joined us with the  story of the Admiral.
