Comment résumer en quelques lignes quatre décennies d'un duo d'amis devenus références de l'architecture navale ? Pas simple...
Marc Van Peteghem et Vincent Lauriot Prévost sont tous les deux parisiens d'origine, et naviguent en famille pendant les vacances dans les années 1960 et 1970, l'un en Méditerranée, l'autre en Bretagne. Ils se rencontrent à Southampton, à la fin des années 1970, où la formation en architecture navale n'est pas encore aussi réputée qu'aujourd’hui. Ils ne finiront pas leur cursus : ils rêvent déjà de simplicité, de légèreté, de multicoque, surtout - tout ce que n'offre pas encore l'école.
S'ils prennent des chemins séparés pour leurs premiers jobs, Marc appelle Vincent quelques années plus tard pour dessiner un foiler de 50 pieds commandé par Vincent Lévy : Gérard Lambert sera le premier plan signé VPLP. On est en 1983, c'est le début d'une longue et prolifique carrière pour un sigle qui va entrer dans le langage commun de la voile.
Van Pet' et Lauriot Prévost sont, au début, des spécialistes de la course (Poulain, Biscuits Cantreau), et sur trois coques. Mais très vite, ils se lancent dans la plaisance, sur deux coques, avec les Lagoon, qui seront construits à plusieurs milliers d'exemplaires. Ils gagnent la Route du Rhum avec Florence Arthaud et Pierre 1er en 1990, puis avec Laurent Bourgnon et Lionel Lemonchois, gagnent des Trophée Jules Verne, participent à l'Hydroptère, dessinent Groupama 3 et le maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V, la liste est trop longue !
La Coupe de l'America, en 2010 - ils sont embarqués dans le défi américain et conçoivent USA 17, le trimaran de 90 pieds à aile rigide qui va l'emporter - emmène VPLP dans un autre monde : après la course et la plaisance, Marc Van Peteghem et Vincent Lauriot Prévost s'intéressent au transport maritime et aux bateaux de travail, en ayant très tôt l'intuition que l'expertise de la course pouvait servir dans le monde de la marine marchande. Un transfert de technologie illustré par le lancement en 2023 de Canopée, un roulier de 120 mètres de long, propulsé par des ailes rigides, conçu par le cabinet.
Entre-temps, il y aura eu les Imoca avec Guillaume Verdier et des victoires dans toutes les courses dont le Vendée Globe, des Ultims, des Ocean Fifty, le Figaro 3...
En 2021, les deux copains de Southampton mesurent ensemble qu'il est temps de passer progressivement la main à la nouvelle génération d'une agence qui emploie près d'une quarantaine de personnes.
Pas de regrets, l'histoire est belle. Jamais d'engueulades ? "Si, comme dans un couple ! (...) Mais ce qu'on n'a jamais perdu, c'est la confiance l'un envers l'autre".

Armel Tripon, 49 ans, a une qualité majeure pour un marin : avec lui, ce n'est jamais fini. Plusieurs fois, il aurait pu renoncer, mais cela ne lui est pas souvent arrivé. "Tant que le plaisir d'aller sur l'eau est là...", résume de ce ton calme et tranquille dont il semble ne jamais se départir.
Nantais pur beurre mais pas voileux, il a la révélation de la mer à l'approche du bac, sur le Muscadet des copains. Pas très passionné par les études, il rentre à 20 ans aux Glénans, où il apprend tout : la navigation et le bricolage sur les bateaux. Il y fait une rencontre marquante : Erwan Le Roux, avec qui il s'intéresse progressivement aux Minis. Il tente sa chance sur la Mini 2001 en série, qu'il abandonne, et embraye sur 2003, qu'il remporte ! Il trouve un sponsor dans la foulée, se lance dans le grand bain du Figaro : de longues et dures années d'apprentissage, au goût parfois amer.
Après sept saisons, il bascule en Class40 aux côtés de Fabrice Amedeo, où il retrouve le plaisir, et, surtout, travaille à un viel objectif : le Vendée Globe.Il monte le projet Imagine, sur l'ex Groupe Bel, décroche une incroyable quatrième place sur le Rhum 2014, mais se fait débarquer quelques jours plus tard ! Jamais mort, il rebondit ensuite en Multi50, attiré par son ami Erwan Le Roux, enchaîne les podiums avant de revenir en vainqueur sur le Rhum 2018 sur Chocolat Réauté
En même temps, il a relancé un projet Imoca avec L'Occitane, sur un bateau qui marque les esprits, le premier scow sur plan Maniard. La machine est démoniaque mais manque de préparation, il boucle son premier Vendée Globe en onzième position, loin du potentiel de son embarcation. Et, à peine arrivé, le bateau est vendu par le sponsor...
Armel Tripon n'a qu'une idée : remonter un projet pour le Vendée Globe 2024. ce sera un plan VPLP, sistership de Malizia, construit avec du carbone déclassé par l'aéronautique et qui portera les couleurs de l'association Les P'tits Doudous. Le projet prend du retard, le bateau sera mis à l'eau début 2025 et l'objectif est désormais le Vendée Globe 2028.
En attendant, il remonte avec son équipe de fidèle, un projet Ocean Fifty, sur l'ancien bateau de Lalou Roucayrol. Trois mois avant la Jacques Vabre 2021, il démâte, mais parvient à être au départ et à monter sur le podium ; puis il chavire en avril 2022, 6 mois avant la Route du Rhum, dont il prend là aussi le départ pour se classer 5e.

Si vous n'êtes pas un habitué des arcanes de la Coupe de l'America, leur nom ne vous dira rien. Et pourtant, Virginie et François Nivelleau sont des piliers de l'épreuve depuis près de 35 ans !
Leur histoire débute à Marseille, où ils se rencontrent... le jour du bac, à 17 ans. Ils ne se quitteront plus : études de maths puis d'architecture navale, régates, premier bureau d'études, ils font tout ensemble. Ils se spécialisent dans les études en soufflerie sur les voiles et les gréements et collaborent avec Marc Pajot pour la coupe de 1992 à San Diego.
Dès 1995, toujours avec l'équipe de Pajot, ils développent une technologie qui permet de mesurer la forme des voiles via une caméra installée en tête de mât, d'abord en différé puis en direct. Ils sont repérés par les Kiwis, qui viennent de remporter la Coupe et déménagent à Auckland. Ils gagneront avec la dream team all black (Brad Butterworth, Tom Schnackenberg, Russell Coutts...) leur première aiguière d'argent.
Ils suivent Coutts chez Alinghi pour trois éditions, dont deux victorieuses (2003, 2007), et font évoluer leur expertise : pour l'édition 2010, ils s'installent à San Diego pour suivre le défi américain pour le compte d'Alinghi. S'ils sont effectivement des "espions", ce sont des espions capables d'interpréter les images qu'ils capturent et de fournir des synthèses précieuses pour le defender - ils iront jusqu'à redessiner des foils...
Ils ne seront pas de l'édition 2013 à San Francisco, mais mèneront ce job de "recon", comme on dit désormais dans le jargon de la Coupe, lors des éditions 2017 et 2021, de nouveau pour Team New Zealand, avec deux nouvelles victoires à la clé.
Pour l'édition 2024, ils passent chez Luna Rossa, mais le boulot a changé : c'est désormais l'organisation qui fournit des milliers d'images de chaque défi, que les analystes décortiquent ensuite.
A 67 et 68 ans, après 9 participations et 5 victoires, la passion des Nivelleau pour la Coupe de l'America ne faiblit pas, et ils sont partants pour la prochaine !

C'est l'un des jobs les plus en vue du monde de la voile de compétition : la direction du Pôle Finistère course au large de Port-la-Forêt, l'usine à champions où sont passés - entre autres - Michel Desjoyeaux, Franck Cammas et nombre de vainqueurs de la Solitaire du Figaro, de la Route du Rhum et du Vendée Globe. Une "institution", selon ses propres dires, dont la patronne est Jeanne Grégoire, 45 ans, qui a succédé en juin 2021 à Christian Le Pape, cofondateur du pôle, à sa tête durant trois décennies.
Rien ne prédestinait, pourtant, la petite Jeanne, née à Paris, élevée dans l'Aisne, à se tourner vers la mer. Mais un stage aux Glénans, à 18 ans, chamboule sa prépa Sciences Po en cours - "une révélation". De stagiaire elle devient bénévole puis monitrice et enchaîne les diplômes (Brevet d'Etat, BPPV). Dans la foulée, son chemin croise celui de la Mini Transat en 1999 et elle se jette dans le grand bain, terminant 8e de l'édition 2001 - "une confirmation, j'étais à ma place".
Quelques semaines plus tard, début 2002, la ministe est admise à Porlaf, comme on appelle déjà le Pôle Finistère course au large, et se lance dans le Figaro. Douze saisons denses s'annoncent - interrompues par la naissance de sa fille en 2009 -, qui vont transformer la voileuse en athlète de haut niveau : Jeanne Grégoire va enchaîner les podiums sur la Transat AG2R avec Gérald Véniard, décrochant également en 2008 une 5e place sur la Solitaire, ce qui reste, à ce jour, la meilleure performance pour une femme dans l'épreuve. Skipper du Figaro Banque Populaire de 2005 à 2012, elle rêvait de s'aligner sur le Vendée Globe, mais la banque de la voile lui préféra Armel Le Céac'h - "Je suis arrivée trop tôt", résume-t-elle sans amertume.
Au mitan des années 2010, elle commence ses premières piges de coach, et y prend vite goût. Dès 2015, Christian Le Pape lui demande d'accompagner les figaristes de Porlaf : son regard, son expérience et sa légitimité font mouche. Elle s'impose dans le paysage du pôle, d'autant qu'elle a complété sa formation à l'Ecole nationale de voile, et c'est en 2019, au départ de la Transat Jacques Vabre, qu'un coureur pose franchement la question de l'avenir à Christian Le Pape, qui bute sur la recherche de son successeur. Dix-huit mois plus tard, le boss du pôle part en vacances avant de prendre sa retraite et de laisser officiellement les rênes du pôle à Jeanne Grégoire.
Et alors, madame la directrice, ces premiers mois ? La réponse fuse, toute simple : "Je me régale !"

Il se définit comme un "professionnel de l'incompétence", qui "voit beaucoup de choses", mais n'est "expert en rien". Un drôle d'autoportrait pour celui qui est devenu, en presque deux décennies de pratique, un coach que nombre de coureurs, des débutants aux plus capés, s'arrachent. A 43 ans, le teint buriné été comme hiver, le Lorientais Tanguy Leglatin passe près de 250 jours par an sur l'eau à décortiquer le comportement des bateaux et des marins. Une observation attentive qu'il transforme en conseils lors de longs débriefings qu'absorbent ses ouailles qui s'en vont ensuite conquérir les podiums dans toutes les séries de la course au large.
Rien ne le prédestinait à pareil destin. Un père photographe et une mère institutrice, moyennement portés sur la voile, un frère versé dans la planche à voile et un dériveur à retaper offert à son entrée en 6e dessinent l'essentiel du décor de ses débuts. C'est la rencontre avec Michel Beaudouin, président de la Société nautique de Larmor-Plage et passionné de Snipe - un vieux dériveur américain -, qui va le lancer dans le monde de la régate. Il enchaîne avec le First Class8 mené par une bande de copains lorientais, puis s'éloigne du bateau en suivant une licence de Staps - option... escalade ! - à Brest.
Quelques remplacements comme prof de sport le convainquent que l'Education nationale n'est pas faite pour lui, mais une nouvelle rencontre avec Laurent Moisson, ex entraîneur au Centre Nautique de Lorient, et les difficultés pour s'entraîner sur son nouveau projet en Melges 24, l'embarquent dans la création d'An Oriant Sail (AOS), un centre d'entraînement privé qui accueille à partir de l'hiver 2004 ses premiers pensionnaires. A l'époque, Tanguy Leglatin passe l'essentiel de son temps à faire de la logistique et s'il va sur l'eau entraîner les clients... c'est qu'AOS ne trouve pas grand monde pour le faire !
Il a 25 ans et la première promo d'AOS truste immédiatement tous les podiums du circuit Mini, Peter Laureyssens, l'un des tout premiers clients, remporte même la Mini Transat en bateaux de série. "Le coach", comme on l'appelle vite, va apprendre en même temps que les coureurs qui affluent à l'ancienne base des sous-marins, qui n'est pas encore le haut lieu de la course qu'elle est devenue. "J'appends d'eux autant que je leur apprends", résume-t-il joliment. En 2007, il prend son indépendance en devenant free-lance. Anne Liardet puis Sam Davies l'embarquent en Imoca, puis c'est au tour des figaristes et de Sébastien Josse, alors chez Gitana, de faire appel à ses services.
Sa "carrière" est lancée : il accueille des coureurs comme Thomas Ruyant, Ian Lipinski, Justine Mettraux, Clarisse Crémer, Erwan Le Draoulec et bien d'autres selon un schéma bien rodé. Détectés en Mini 6.50, ils conservent le coach qui les a révélés quand ils attaquent Figaro, Class40 ou Imoca. Car depuis ses débuts, Tanguy Leglatin a toujours gardé la même ligne de conduite : travailler avec les pros, mais aussi continuer à entraîner les débutants et les faire grandir, en prenant en compte l'ensemble des paramètres d'un projet. Le secret d'un coach qui, désormais, ne cache plus son envie d'aller appliquer lui-même en course ce qu'il enseigne depuis près de vingt ans.

Les mômes qui apprennent la voile sur le lac de Cazaux ne gagnent pas tous la Coupe de l'America. Mais on en compte au moins un, et il s'appelle Philippe Presti.
A 56 ans, l'Arcachonnais est un coach très recherché par les teams qui se lancent dans la conquête de l'aiguière d'argent. Avant de devenir une référence, ce prof d'EPS a appris la voile à Bordeaux, avant de tomber dans la régate, presque par hasard.
Lasériste à l'origine, il passe sur Finn et, trois ans plus tard, devient champion du monde en 1993, à 28 ans, puis champion d'Europe en 1995, avant de partir aux Jeux d'Atlanta en 1996 (14e) et d'enchaîner avec un nouveau titre mondial ! Il se lance ensuite dans le Soling (9e aux Jeux de Sydney) qui lui permet de découvrir le circuit mondial de match-racing, à l'époque antichambre de la Coupe de l'America.
En 2003, il découvre la Coupe pour de bon, avec le défi français 6e Sens : c'est le début d'une longue histoire, toujours en cours, près de vingt ans plus tard. Luna Rossa (2007), BMW Oracle (2010), Oracle Team USA (2013 et 2017), Luna Rossa (2021), Philippe Presti participe comme coach aux cinq dernières éditions, en remportant deux, dont la mythique remontada face aux Kiwis à San Francisco en 2013.
Enfin, depuis 2018, il cumule la Coupe avec le circuit SailGP, gagnant la première édition avec l'équipe australienne, avant d'être transféré dans l'équipe américaine à l'arrivée de Jimmy Spithill, avec qui il a collaboré lors de cinq des six éditions auxquelles il a participé.
Une carrière - toujours en cours ! - incroyable, que Philippe Presti prend le temps de nous raconter avec chaleur et précision tout au long de cet épisode diffusé en deux parties.

Christian Le Pape se serait bien vu comme nombre de ses copains de la baie de la Forêt dans les années 1980 - les Le Cam, Jourdain, Guillemot - devenir coureur à plein temps. Mais la vie de saltimbanque sans statut qui allait avec ne l'emballait pas trop et il a préféré devenir prof de gym.
De ce choix cornélien de sa jeunesse, le Finistérien gardera une trace qui l'amènera, en 1990, a créer une structure qui va profondément transformer et organiser la voile de compétition en France : le Pôle Finistère Course Au Large de Port-La-Forêt.
Trois décennies plus tard, Christian Le Pape, 61 ans, raconte dans cet épisode le cheminement qui amène des marins - qui, longtemps, ont préféré investir dans le matériel - vers l'entraînement et la professionnalisation de leur pratique.
Trente années passées à survoler les podiums et à se construire un palmarès incroyable, d'abord en Figaro (la Solitaire n'a pas échappé depuis 2002 à un coureur du pôle) puis en Imoca (idem pour le Vendée Globe depuis 2000-2001), qui font de Portlaf', comme on dit, une référence en or massif de la course au large.
L'ex prof d'EPS n'occulte pas les difficultés, les discussions, les dissensions sur la route du succès mais évoque aussi le chercheur de pépites qu'il est, ayant détecté tour à tour Franck Cammas, Armel Le Cléac'h, François Gabart, Sébastien Simon.
Plus de 2 heures d'émission pour découvrir comment fonctionne, non pas la Star Ac' de la voile, comme on a pu parfois appeler le Pôle, mais plutôt le Harvard de la course au large !
