In today’s episode, I am going to address how we numb ourselves from pain, emotions and overwhelm. This isn’t an easy topic to talk about for anyone. No one wants their substance of choice to be poked at.
Let's talk about sadness and anger. We can choose to use the coping mechanism to avoid it or we can dig deeper to find the root cause to help move through it. A coping mechanism could be alcohol, marijuana, eating the box of cookies ect.
Hurt and pain are telling us where we really are. A lot of us like to take that hurt and pain and shove it down. It’s really good to sit with the positive. It isn’t easy to sit in grief, hurt, sadness, anger ect.
When you go numb you are turning off all of the emotions, the joy and the sadness.
Recently, I had my own anger that I went through. I could have gone to the box of cookies, but I chose something different. I decided to meditate into the anger to discover what was the root cause of it. I have been doing this work for a while. It still doesn’t make it any easier. What I have found is that doing this allows my emotions to move through it quicker the more I practice. If I went for the box of cookies, I wouldn’t have acknowledged how I really feel. I wouldn’t have been able to discover as much as I did.
How do we find the courage to go deeper to look behind the curtain of negative emotion? This is how we grow otherwise we will be unattached from our body.
Being real, honest and open with yourself is the most important thing. If you aren’t able to do that right now, you are starting the journey of the conversation with yourself.
If you want something different, you need to do something different.
How do you cope with hard things? I am going to challenge you not to numb. I want you to challenge yourself to treat yourself differently. I encourage you to learn how to move the emotions out and through instead of squashing them.
